It could be an over-restrictive firewall. Heaven knows mine has caused me plenty of problems. Does your dorm use any proxy/login procedure?

Probably you're connecting through a proxy. By default, squid will only allow you to use the CONNECT command (needed by IM clients, SSL connections, IRC, P2P) on a couple of ports, and IRC isn't one of them. Can you connect to IM networks? In xchat2, check Settings > Preferences, in Network > Network Setup. Also make sure that the "use proxy setting" option is ticked in the individual server setting. I fail to see how that is a problem, and i fail to see why it needed to be posted here. Lots of people have been banned, and all (Okay, most) of them deserved it, you're no exception. If you came in and joined any current conversations, like a normal person, and you spoke in a way that was understandable, then people would respect you. You've got to understand that it's a small room, and that people aren't there 24/7. If no-one is talking, then either shut up until someone is, or say something intelligent yourself. Don't bother asking "Is anyone here?" Because, there probably isn't, and if there is, they're probably doing something else. [This message has been edited by Rage Dump (edited 10-17-2004).]

Question I am unsure of where to post. When I try connecting either through IRC or the java link, I get a message saying I've been banned. This is wierd simply because I haven't actually gotten into the chat before. Can I work around this at all? My computer knowledge isn't that great.

Are you an AOL user? Sometimes when the operators ban an AOL user, it bans a whole bunch of other people as well, since it clumps large groups of people into one proxy server.

Someone might have banned a broad range of addresses, sometimes needs to be done to make sure people can't reconnect to the chat once they reset thier connections.Assuming this is the case, tell me your hostname, then one of the ops should unban you, if not i'll let one of them know tonight, if i remember. To get your hostname, open your IRC client, connect to a server and do /whois [YourNickName] I'm pretty sure, registered or no, that should give you your hostname. It'll look something like this
code:
~CGEFUser@euirc-4a3f3e89.neave01.pa.comcast.net Username Random Service provider

They don't ban AOL users, not to an extent where they can't get back after reconncting to thier ISP, anyway.Keep trying, Probulator, it's 7 hours until i get home and can let the ops know, but i'm sure someone else will let them know first.

If it gives a reason, that means you've been banned by the admins, someone with a similar hostmark must have tried to sell some crap. Mail the guys at EUirc about it

I think I get that sometimes when using java. Might be the same thing. WHne I'm connecting through a java client it'll say something like "User banned" from whatever. It went away after a while. I suggest you stop using java.

What's up with #fc? I tried going to it on Trillian and it didn't work, so I tried going to it on Firefox from PEEL and it said I was banned, then I tried PEEL and CGEF on AOL and that did nothing, then I asked Zeep to try it and he got the same banned message.

Benderboy: My advice would be to not use the Java client and get something like Xchat or Trillian instead. And don't fight it either. I resisted getting the new technology for a while, but I'm glad I did now.

Actually, Benderboy, you are banned because you were slightly annoying. And by "slightly annoying" I mean "annoying as fuck". So this ban might very well be the cause of the problem.------------------ Redundancy is my favorite word is redundancy.

If you want to get on using Firefox you'd be better off using ChatZilla than the Java client... this won't help if you are banned though ------------------ Tweek's Site

Well, I was never banned, it says no such thing when I enter the chatroom, nothing happens, I never get to the chat.

I dunno... just keep trying to get in I guess... or email the people on the network. I'm not sure if it's a network ban, or the channel ban, if it's the channel ban (someone may have accidently banned an entire isp in #fc) then I'm sure it got fixed soon.

Actually, yes, you were banned from #fc and at least at the point of my last post, you were in the banlist. However, if Comcast got banned from the network (and when it happened the message seemed to indicate that), you won't be able to do anything about it. Pixy had to wait for months untill Roadrunner was allowed to join EuIRC again. Although Speli is on there, so I guess it's just you, really.------------------ Redundancy is my favorite word is redundancy. [This message has been edited by SpacemanSpiff (edited 11-09-2004).]

Not sure how long-term this is but i'll say it anyway. If anyone's having trouble connecting because of ping timeouts, use: /server irc.bas.ch.euirc.net To connect to the server. irc.ham.de.euirc.net is down, and as such, so is irc.doop.org and irc.sick-du.de.

Yeah, it was down for about 2 days... give or take a day. if you ever need another server though, just go to google and look up "euirc server" to find list of their servers.

Lots of people get banned because they just end up flooding the chat, being annoying or insulting the ops/the room. They're usually short-term just to prevent them rejoining. ------------------ The Unofficial PEEL Webby McHelpHelp and Best Young PEELer 2002 and POTM June 2004!

Yeah, no ones ever been on a perma ban. In fact slimmy and marc clear out the banlist on the a regular basis. As long as you're willing to be reasonable, you won't have any problems. And we do have a good time, it gets chaotic, just make sure everyone else is having fun too

I havn't been on in a few weeks and now I come back to find I can't join with the message "#futuramachat unable to join channel (address is banned)" I can't think what I might have done a few weeks ago to get me banned, It's not as though I was kicked from the channel or anything, I just left, and if was banned then why am I still banned now? That's a PEEL thing, every posts saves the IP from where it was made, so that the admins can track down from where on earth it came. (Good for the witch hunt on Fake-accounts)It has nothing to do with #Futuramachat though. The whole #FC has nothing to do with PEEL.

We can see your IP address when you log onto #fc however. It depends on the client you use to connect to the irc network. If you join using one of the links on PEEL or CGEF however, you can't see people's IP addresses. It's very useful when someone new comes into the room and tries to troll around by leaving and switching names... your ip doesn't change, so we still know it's you
