yeah I agree with Arkan.  If it was going to be in the fall lineup you'd expect the writers to start working before July/August...  I bet we have to wait til next spring.

Oohh, the time will go so slowly!!

I know I just can't wait, as the Excellent show we all admire is continuing the exciting tales of the P.E.Crew   :D and also the relationship between Fry and Leela will continue   :) She must have fell for him after the opera, but now we will see if she does, Bender will continue his amusing in your face mannerisms, Fry will continue his discovery of the fascinating advances of the Future   :), Zoidberg will continue his funny personality and his strange creature traditions etc, Maybe the explanation into why Leela is the mysterious 'other' in the mysteries of the freezing incident   :) !!!!!!

I just can't wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The new episodes will continue my great love for Futurama    , through these features and more!!!!!    :D

Sounds reasonable. Spring 2008 sounds even more likely considering Comedy Central doesn't get the rights to the first 4 sesons until January 2008.

I mean, why would you run a show where you're basically saying "if you want to see how it all started tune in to our competitor"? Plus if FOX co-finance it, I'm sure they want first dibs on broadcasting since the deal with CN and CC only applies to reruns.

Finally, I like Billy and I want this to be true, but....

@ Teral:

Granted the Billy Claim-o-meter may have merit, but:

It was another person, Katie Sagal saying it on a broadcast TV show.  She said that she signed the contract and that was going to show up for VA in late July.  Her appearance was for PR for the show.

Billy did tell the truth about the DVD's and eps, but he was squelched by DXC and FOX for saying too much.

I'd doubt that FOX would go far enough to sign contracts with Billy and Katey (and the rest of the gang) without being committed to the project.

Remember - the original writers gaves us such grat episodes as The Cryonic Woman and Mars University.  We can't expect all the new eps to be stellar displays like Leela's Homeworld, X-mas Story, The Luck Of The Fryish and Jurassic Bark.  If we get 16 eps, I'll be happy for 2-4 great eps, 2 turkeys and the rest mediocre (for Futurama standards).

This is Groening's baby - I'd rather doubt that he'd allow second rate material to be broadcast seeing as that it's getting a second life.  Also, DXC is involved, and we know that Futurama is more than a job to him.

Billy West has stated that all the voice actors are coming back and have signed contracts.

I'll be more concerned about the movies.  I'm hoping for a four part epic with several subplots.  If they have to make the movies like multiple eps to be shown on TV later - that will severely cramp the style of being able to have more mature plots and make the stories seemed rushed.

Still, I'm happy to have some concrete news.

'Futurama' Flies to Comedy Central

Thursday, October 27, 2005

02:36 PM PT
The animated series "Futurama," which has enjoyed a long and healthy afterlife on the Cartoon Network, will be getting a new home ... in the future.

Comedy Central announced Thursday (Oct. 27) that it's acquiring the Emmy-winning show, created by "The Simpsons" mastermind Matt Groening, from 20th Century Fox TV. However, the network won't get "Futurama" until 2008, when Cartoon Network's rights to the show run out.

Despite the faraway start date, Comedy Central is nonetheless thrilled to have the show.
"Matt Groening is a genius, and in 'Futurama' he created an award-winning, multi-layered series that is both intelligent and very funny and whose animation is fantastic," says David Bernath, senior vice president of programming at the network. "There aren't many series available that dovetail so perfectly with the Comedy Central brand."

"Futurama" was nominated for four Emmys for outstanding animated program during its time on FOX, winning the award in 2002. It had a somewhat choppy history on the network, though, that included a couple of lengthy hiatus periods and only one season, 1999-2000, that had as many as 20 episodes.

Groening developed the show with "Simpsons" veteran David X. Cohen.

Now, we all know 'Futurama' was never actually never cancelled. F*X just stopped buying the episodes, and with out funding, they were stopped being made. Now, I'm not sure, but is it possible Comedy Central is buying all the rights to 'Futurama', not just the syndication ones, and then merely providing funding again?

I don't know, but will it be a shame to lose that 30th Century logo? No more plane crashes to film... Although if F*X doesn't own them even more, the show can be more lashing with their jabs. Oh, they'll be able make better jabs at F*X than 'Family Guy' did to 'Entertainment Weekly'!

I think FOX is funding the DTV-DVDs. Didn't both the FOX Pres. and MG/DXC confirm that in articles earlier this year? They went on to say that episodes for TV were being "negotiated". Comedy Central (Time Warner) may be sort of leasing the rights from FOX/MG or they may be in a joint venture.

I wondered for a long time, given the sucess of The Simpsons, why Groening wasn't going more toward being his own studio like other production companies. Making a product and selling it to whoever wanted it. May be easier said than done.

Sort of like the 1st Star Wars movie was made for FOX and then then next for MGM because Lucas was always having trouble with FOX.

Once again Xanfor thanks for the sources you're doing a great job at providing us fans with the information we want to hear. Also I believe you will be correct with the more lashing things as Comedy Central even has South Park lol and that takes many lashings to MANY beliefs shows etc so the show may be more free to express itself!  :)

Xanfor have you found any information on what channel Futurama will be broadcast on here for us British fans (Me, Bean etc), as it has been broadcast on Sky One along with the Simpsons which Fox is broadcasting so will it still be on Sky One or possibly another channel, as Fox are there competition...?

We've had all five seasons air on free-to-air before, we're just up to Season 3 on Channel 10. Even so, by the time they'd air in the US, we'd be much further into the show by then, and if not, nothing's stopping them from airing a large amount of episodes in a row, or skipping straight to the new ones (though that's a bad idea).

Well the rumour is that they already had the scripts, or at least the stories, for production season 5 when they got the news from Fox that the show wasn't going to be renewed. If so then they've been sitting on the scripts for the last 3 years or so so they ought to have at least 1 more good season up their sleeves. And Matt G did say in an interview they have "so many more stories to tell" so I'm fairly confident about it.

Ahh, so you and Mr. Bean are in Britian? Sorry, no information as of yet. However, if I do find out, I'll be sure to let you know.

Now, this is the '4 DVD Movies' thread. I suggest if we want to talk about the new episodes, we move here. You know, just to keep things organized.  ;)

But don't worry, people in countries where they won't be played right away. I don't have, cable, so I won't  be able to see them right away either.

@Chug a Bug: You're right. There are so many more things to be explored in the overall 'Futurama' story arc. Like The Other, this, and of course, Fry and Leela!

From Variety explaining one of the reasons for the Futurama direct-to-DVD:

-----

from variety

Studios dizzy over DVD divisions
H'wood reaps hefty returns with made-for spinoffs
By DIANE GARRETT

They don't give out Oscars for them. Glamorous star vehicles, they're
not. Yet studios can't get enough of made-for DVDs for a very
simple reason: They make money without much of a risk.

In the past two years, studios have increasingly made a made-for push
as a way to generate easy coin. Nearly every major has a department
devoted to this product, with MGM the latest to jump on the bandwagon.
The Lion is planning a dozen made-for DVD projects next year,
averaging $2.5 million apiece.

So, what makes these projects so different from direct-to-vid of years
past?

For one thing, budgets are consistently higher, in the $3 million to
$5 million range, occasionally going as high as $10 million.

For another, the range has been broadened beyond kidvid and
undistinguishable action fare.

Current projects revisit feature films as varied as "Dukes of
Hazzard," "Butterfly Effect," "Bring It On" and "Carlito's Way" and
even the "Futurama" TV skein.

And these projects are more polished than their predecessors.

But more to the point, they're selling.

The family-friendly sequel to "The Sandlot" bowed on homevid last May,
a dozen years after the bigscreen original, and generated almost $20
million for Fox homevid.

It was soon followed by U's "Carlito's Way" prequel, also a dozen
years after the original. The tyro helming effort by Michael Bregman,
who produced the original pic with his father, Martin, generated a
healthy $22.1 million.

Fox's spinoff of "Family Guy," "Stewie Griffin: The Untold Story,"
produced by its TV division, generated a whopping $78 million to
become the top-selling DVD made-for last year. That performance bested
Disney's "Mulan II," a more traditional DVD sequel.

The success of these pics, along with the boffoboffo fourth
installment in the "American Pie" franchise at year's end, made
made-fors downright respectable.

Fox has tripled its DVD premiere output, venturing outside
kid-friendly programming with an upcoming sequel to "Wrong Turn."
Other studios are producing gangster pics like the "Carlito's Way"
prequel, horror titles, teen sequels and concert films.

"When growth slows, you hit upon another way to make money," says Fox
homevid chief operating officer Steve Bersch. "There's always been a
huge amount of activity in the indie arena. Now the studios are
getting involved."

With lower budgets, cheaper talent and far lower marketing costs than
theatricals, direct-to-vid spinoffs can easily generate several times
their cost. MGM, for example, figures it can make $4 million profit on
made-fors that cost $2.5 million.

"The risk-reward ratio looks good from a business perspective," says
New Line homevid senior VP acquisitions and programming Kevin Kasha.
"There are lots of great stories and ideas that don't necessarily have
the audience to justify the $20 million-plus of P&A that it would cost
to release it theatrically."

Warner, which plans to produce 10-15 projects annually under a new
partnership between the theatrical and homevid divisions, ratcheted
down the "Dukes" prequel budget to $5 million with lower-cost talent,
replacing Jessica Simpson with thesp April Scott ("Deal or No Deal" ).
Also presumably left out were the expensive car chases in the 2005
feature. (The movie pulled in $80 million domestically but largely
fizzled overseas.)

Although Sony has been producing direct-to-disc titles for years under
its Screen Gems arm, rivals credit U homevid topper Craig Kornblau
with really pushing the boundaries -- and budgets -- outside kidvid.
After years overseeing the "Land Before Time" animated kidvid line for
the studio, he championed more broadly targeted fare.

"You have a business that makes $24 billion, while theatrical makes $8
billion. Why aren't we making product for it?" Kornblau reasons.

So he ramped up the budgets and the marketing push. U is among the
most aggressive, spending as much as $10 million on projects, and
backing its bows with millions in marketing support.

"Look at the success Craig had on 'Carlito's Way'; that was a gamble,"
Lionsgate prexy Steve Beeks says. "Do that and you miss and it can
really hurt you."

U's success nonetheless has inspired Beeks to check his own library
for possible remakes. (Budget-minded studios like Lionsgate typically
earmark $1.5 million $3.5 million for their productions and spend
considerably less promoting them.)

Without a box office campaign or high-profile cast, studios try to tap
into existing franchises.

"Brand is everything," says Clint Culpepper, prexy of Screen Gems,
which produces 12 to 20 direct-to-disc titles annually. "Without brand
awareness it's hard to get shelf space."

Like many a sequel, these offerings can be formulaic.

Usually producers bring back at least one actor from the original, but
barring that, they turn the movie into a prequel to get around
continuity issues.

Thus U manufactured a flimsy pretext for Eugene Levy to be at band
camp in the fourth installment of "American Pie," which lacks
franchise stalwarts Jason Biggs, Alyson Hannigan and Seann William
Scott.

Despite their absence, U was able to generate boffo sales -- now past
2 million units -- by sticking to the raunchy formula of the previous
installments of "Pie." Porn star Ginger Lynn Allen's willingness to
doff her top probably didn't hurt word-of-mouth among teen boys,
either.

Casting is sometimes made with an eye toward retail favorites or TV
shows popular with the target audaud.

Country singer Toby Keith, who stars in an upcoming Paramount
direct-to-disc title that debuts on sister cabler CMT, is popular at
Wal-Mart, notes Par homevideo senor VP Ellen Pittleman. Other projects
tie into MTV or Par library titles such as "Save the Last Dance."

"We sort of balance original stuff we're able to brand with things
people recognize and straight-ahead sequels," Pittleman says. "I'm
interested in whatever we can make money on."

Other studios are exploring new types of genre fare for made-fors.

Warner has created a Raw Feed brand for horror, while New Line is
adapting Danielle Steel romance novels and urban fare from Russell
Simmons. Fox's TV division hopes to replicate its "Family Guy" success
with a made-for based on "Futurama."

These projects may not have the big budgets of their theatrical
counterparts, but that doesn't mean there isn't an audience for them,
New Line's Kasha says.

"If the audience didn't want them, we wouldn't be making them."

OK, I have an anonymous connection with RDS who told me back a few months ago that Billy West was right about the new eps but was forced to make the retraction and is now under a gag order from FOX (as part of his contract) - he can't speak specifics about Futurama.

Maybe Sarge will come back and let us know if my source is full of shit or not.

This is what I've been told, and I've been given permission to share it on PEEL.

(BTW, PEEL is kinda looked upon as kooky by the members of the RDS board, so getting permission to share wasn't easy.)

First off, 1 DVD was a done-deal before CC entered negotiations.  The reason CC paid a record $28.8 million dollars for the 5 year run (after it has run 5 years in heavy rotation on CN) was that they wanted to make new, edgier episodes.  The deal was ironed out late last year for CC to have exclusive rights to Futurama from Jan 1, 2008 to Dec 31, 2012.  CC now has the rights to buy new eps of Futurama in 13 episode batches (like they do with South Park) and air them exclusively for the contracted time.  The rub is this:  There will be 4 direct to market DVD's separate from the new episodes.  CC has the rights to air the DVD's on a limited basis exclusively on CC 1 year after eqch is released - they may be broken up into a continuing saga rather than being aired as a 90 minute movie.  FOX has given up all broadcast rights to CC until 2013 but will still own Futurama.

The CC deal makes CC pay the majority of the cost of producing the new episodes while FOX retains ownership.  That's a sweet deal for FOX because the DVD's are sure to make huge profits with the rabid fanbase that already exists and somebody else is paying to produce new episodes, which are pretty well going to sell well on DVD.

The new eps on CC will be more mature in content - more of a PG-13 rating.  Since CC is cable, the regulations are less strict than broadcast TV.  FOX doesn't want to go much harder than that since they will still own the Series and may want to syndicate it out to broadcast TV stations after the CC deal has expired.

So according to my source, there will be at least 13 new eps with option to produce more in 13 episode batches and 4 DVD's.  Also, in either the last DVD or the new eps, the Leela/Fry romance arc will be settled in the very last episode aired and not before.  In other words, when Futurama gets cancelled for the last time, we will have resolution of Fry and Leela.

Now watch somebody prove to me that my source is full of crap.

This is the one thing that's been concerning me about Comedy Central taking Futurama's reins actually. Being a little more edge might be okay, but I don't want Futurama to become just crass-for-the-sake-of-crass and less witty when it returns like 99% of the rest of Comedy Central's stuff. I want it to return in it's same nerdy, witty and genius form. As long as David X. Cohen is at the helm, I think the show will remain pretty much the same, but I'm still concerned, since Futurama is of a much higher calibre intelligence wise than CC is used to, and I'm afraid they might try to make it suit their network more.

Matt Groening, DXC and FOX still retain full control of the content.  Remember some of the outakes on the DVD's that FOX censors wouldn't let broadcast?  Now the writers and producers will have a little mor latitude.

I don't fear it becoming crass like South park.  I'd enjoy a little more mature content.

So I'd guess that means, since the episodes are pretty much sealed up to be produced in the baches, since CC wouldn't want to pass up such a chance now that they have partial ownership, none of the movies will end the Fry/Leela relationship. That's a good thing too. The bad thing, for the shippers, is looking at it as years of Fry/Leela possibly not being resolved until around 2012.

But, the good news is that Futurama can make episodes like Cartman Get an Anal Probe without being censored like they would on Fox(*hint hint*- Spanish Fry atmosphere and themes in more episodes) and the return of uncensored "Sweet Zombie Jesus"!

Well, now we know what the war of 2012 was about... O'Brain's getting kicked out to make room for 'Futurama'! Hee hee...

No, seriously, I'm not.

But why is it a good thing that none of the movies will clear up the Fry+Leela thing? Oh, right, 'cause the series is almost certain to be renewed! Waiting 'till 2012 is fine for me. I'm holding off buying the DVD's until I can can have the super-mega boxed set! By then I should have money too... And cable!

Us shippers can wait. We can wait. Even if just to spite the anti-shippers. We can wait. [Mr. Burns]Excellent...[/Mr. Burns]

That would kind of make sense of something that Matt Groening said in the Onion AV interview about the DVD movies a little over a month ago and has been bugging me ever since this latest news came out:

"Right now we're trying to figure out whether to do a giant epic, or separate crazy movies"

If they're making 13 new episodes for CC then why make them as a single giant epic? Or even separate crazy movies? Why not make 13 separate episodes and put them on the DVD as 13 separate episodes like the Season 1 DVD set?

It makes no sense unless the movies are separate from the new episodes.

I actually hope they don't drag the ship out forever. Eventually it would get old. like Mulder and Scully. By the time they settled that ship instead of being all "yay!" it was more like "'Bout freakin time already, sheesh!".

I wouldn't have posted my missive unless I had a high degree of believing it was legit.  I belong to the RDS board but have posted very little and not under Ralph Snart.  My source and I communicate via email and via other boards that relate to the paranormal and MUFON.  This source told me that Billy West was correct about the new episodes and was severely admonished for 'spilling the beans'.  Later this year and next year there will be the beginning of an advertising campaign with the full blitz to start next summer.

My source does not claim to speak to DXC or Matt Groening, but is involved with Rough Draft Studios.  This person is not affilated with FOX (RDS hates FOX to a degree) but is doing work related to the show.  Futurama is a red hot topic at RDS - there are high hopes of the series making the studio a lot of money.
