Or they look it up in a holographic history book, much like the garbage crisis in "A Big Piece of Garbage" and global warming in "None Like It Hot".

Or they defrost another person from the 21st century (maybe even Fry's brother) and he/she tells it in flashback.

Hmmm, Dubya's head in a jar?

I think the time travel bit has only been specifically mentioned by the Ain't It Cool News sneak peak article (unless I missed a producer mentioning it in an interview), but most of the other stuff they mentioned has also been confirmed elsewhere (the title, Seymour, Al Gore's guest appearance, etc.), so the appearance of time travel wouldn't surprise me.

Oh good Lord in heaven, no.  Talk about detracting from "Fryrish."    :(

Sarah Silverman has been confirmed as a guest star, though.  If she comes back as Michelle, maybe it's so she can serve this purpose.

Oh, I do so hope Futurama doesn't degrade to a political commentary. 'The Simpsons' does that already to great effect, we don't need another.

I'll put my money on the movie featuring time travel back to the 21st century if both Seymour and Michelle are going to be in it. Bender is the most likely candidate to do, if any, time traveling in this movie (hence the title, "Bender's Big Score" ).

From the summary on Ain't it Cool News, appearantly Barbados Slim will also be making an appearance. My question is that if Barbados will show up in present time, or if we will be also learning about Hermes's troubled past with his Olympic rival through time travel. I sure that the writer of the article on Ain't it Cool News, Hercules the Strong, has read the script for the movie, as future articles that were released about the movie contained information very similar to his article. Because of so, it's possible that when his article states that the movie will have "a little time travel", this might hint that it's not really a little, it's quite a lot. Who knows, there could even be some time traveling to the future.

My comments were pure speculation regarding time travel.  Sorry, should have emphasized that.

So summary on possible ways to learn about the 2000 election:

(1) Character travels back in time.
(2) Nibbler or other long-lived alien discusses in flashback.
(3) A head in the jar reminisces about the past.
(4) A new 20-th century character gets unfrozen and tells a story in flashback.
(5) A video documentary discusses the past.

It would be fun to have a poll on this as the release date gets closer.

Changing the subject yet again...I've been trying to find a "loose ends/unresolved questions" thread to little luck, but three loose ends in the "mythology" I'm curious about are

(1) Potential role of Leela as the "Other";

(2) How the cyrogenics lab remained standing over 1000 years, even surviving two alien invasions.  I can't recall where, but this fact was mentioned by Cohen as being important, during an interview or DVD commentary. A large question is whether Nibblonians intervened over the next 1000 years in human history to ensure Fry's arrival.

(3) Was there a second nibblonian hiding in the trash can in the cyrogenics lab in Dec. 31, 1999? (God I sound like a JFK conspiracy guy).

Any others I missed?

That Ain't it cool news article is very intriguing, isn't it? There was a fair amount of skepticism about it at the time, but a lot of it does ring true.

Yes, y’fergot the most important one!  :D

(04) Will Fry & Leela form a committed, romantic relationship?
Yes I’m a shipper - and flamin’ well proud of it! Sue me.

Also:

(05) What's Leela’s life between the orphanarium and meeting Fry like?
(06) What’s Zoidberg’s backstory?
(07) What’s Hermes & LaBarbra’s backstory, and what was Barbados’ slim's part?
(08) What will happen between Kif & Amy?
(09) Farnsworth & Mom’s backstory.

And:

(10) How in the name of SANITY did someone as abjectly incompetent as Zap Brannigan achieve such exalted rank?
*Pft!* And dark matter is s.posed to be a mystery...

SpaceCase, thanks for the thread link and extra questions!  I love the Zapp question...

Having looked over the thread, it looks like questions (1)-(10) cover most thread topics, unless you think owls and Morbo are a big mystery.

Your avatar hinted that you weren't in the platonic camp!  It seems like half the PEELers and 90% of the fanfic writers are shippers, so it looks like the anti-shippers are the real flamebait.

I really like the Fry/Leela relationship, and it clearly is the long-term bedrock story of the series.  But if I want them to get together, but not until a few episodes before the end of the series, does that make me a shipper, or just a boater?   :)

Anyway, I think the real unknown question is not if they are getting together, but at what point, since Groening and Cohen both stated on the "Why of Fry" DVD commentary that they wanted those two together.

Still, it would be interesting to learn more about Leela's past and relationship with Sean.

On yet another topic, here 's a cute recent blog story that also reveals that Al Gore will be present as a head in a jar, and not as himself in 2000.

(10) How could Zapp...? Same way it's done now, just watch the news.

Sometimes when I read shipper threads I wonder if it even matters to them if it's a sci-fi, animated program.

People said I was dumb, but I proved them!

Personally, I just love "How to write a Shippy Futurama Fanfic" too.

I really really like the shipper threads, and I understand why there are (seem to be?) so many shippers.  Strangely enough, at times Futurama strikes me as one of the most romantic shows around, which really caught me off guard when I first saw the episodes.

There are some good shipper fanfics that almost convince me that a Fry/Leela romantic relationship could exist and keep the show funny and edgy. But then there are the Frank and Lola ones that erase that good impression...

Is this what the powers-that-be call "off topic"?

That's just good, old-fashioned mockery. But if it degrades down to to a point where it obvious that one particular political viewpoint is being overly supported, then I shall be disappointed.

One of the [adult swim] bump thingies said that the Futurama marathon last Saturday pulled in a 1.2 rating. It also said anime usually only gets a .3 rating, even with promotion. For a 3 hour cable TV marathon starting at 11pm on a Saturday night, that's awesome ratings.

Considering that rating at that timeslot, just think about how Futurama will do weeknights during primetime on Comedy Central. Thinks are looking good for Futurama.

Sorry if this has already been posted.

Futurama is ranked the # 21 of the top 25 best Sci-Fi ever on TV or in the movies.  It even beat out Quantum Leap.

From IMBd:

 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0149460/board/thread/77078561?d=77088395#77088395

Thanks for the compliments... yeah, it's really me. I don't know why some have had a hard time believing an actor actually posts on IMDB. I'm a fan of the medium as well as working in it, plus, I appreciate that anyone appreciates my work, and want to let them know I do. I'm just too damn lazy to put up my own website. Plus, it would then rather obligate me to post on a regular basis, and I really only want to post when I have something interesting to say.

Speaking of which, Bender's Big Score is in post, and I assume we'll be tweaking the jokes in ADR soon (as if they weren't brillant enough already). It's set for a 12/4/07 release. The other 3 DVDs are great, too. We just recorded the final one, "Into the Wild Green Yonder" (hey, if I'm not really me, then how would I know that? Just a passing shot to the naysayers as to the veracity of my identity) all this past week. A great script, touching, relevant, a bit awe-inspiring, and of course, full of huge laughs. And the cast was in the finest form, even yours truly, who gets to do a hilarious B-story with The Donbot and Clamps at their funniest and most menacing.

Take care, and thanks for helping revive our little show. That goes also to all of you reading this, which I assume you're doing because you're Futurama fans. We're back because of your actions, both through letters and DVD sales, which let the powers that be know that Futurama is loved and missed.

Best,
Maurice LaMarche

I've been curious about the sales volume of the Futurama DVDs, since everyone says they've been great and are quoted as a reason for the show's return.  Is this public information?  And if so, any link?

This is awesome, Matt Groening said it would come out in December but it's so clool to have an actual release date (I wonder what the UK date is, if it's later I'll just import the American DVD so it doesn't really matter that much...)...

I had assumed that the collective 4 movies were called 'Benders Big Score', but now it seems that each movie will have it's own title. So 'Benders Big Score' is the first DVD, and the fourth is 'Into the Wild Green Yonder'. Now we need the second and third DVD movie titles. I wonder what 'Into the Wild Green Yonder' means? Let the speculation begin!...

When I think of "green" in Futurama, one of the first things that comes to my mind is the Horrible Gelatinous Blob. In combination with the title of the last movie, it sounds like they PE crew gets inside a huge HGB. That'd be both sick and interesting!

Now that we know #1 and #4's names, we can speculate about the other two's names!

I think I've seen that quote before, but thanks for reposting it, as I'd forgotten which interview it came from.

"Into the Wild Green Yonder" sounds like it's a play off of "Into the Wild Blue Yonder," which is the official song for the US Air Force.  So, when I think of that, (Earth's) domestic defense first springs to mind (Zapp Brannigan, perhaps?  A war?).  I have no idea why the "yonder" would be green, though.

I would imagine that Zapp Brannigan will play quite a large role in at least one of the movies, and the final one would probably be most likely, although I have no idea. The green bit has me confused too. Kif's home planet came to mind, but I doubt it's anything to do with that. Maybe it has something to do with the Army and green uniforms, and Zapp could be in charge like in 'War Is The H-Word', dunno...

I'm really glad that the robot mafia are back, that's really awesome news. They were barely in the entire of Season 4 of Futurama. I think maybe in the background in 'Bender Should Not Be Allowed On TV' and that's it. Good to see them back propperly...

With a title like that AlGore has just
GOT to be involved...  ;)

Perhaps green things in the show might shed light on what’s in store.
Hmm... things that are green in Futurama:
In no particular order.
  • The P.E. ship.
  • Kif.
  • Amphibios (Kif’s world).
  • Mutagenic Lake.
  • Brain-Slugs.
  • Horible Gelatinous Blob.
  • Being of Inconceivable Horror?
  • Unnamed green aliens in “TKOS.”
  • Morbo’s race.
  • The Internet.
  • Spheron 1?
  • Earthican money.
  • Alkazar (true from).
  • Fnog.
  • Amazonia?
  • Professor Streptococcus? (“ACoMO”).
  • Duraflame National Forest.
  • Professor Farnsworth’s glow-in-the-dark novelty noses.
  • Toxic waste from the machine that makes the above.
  • Slurm, & ‘super’ Slurm.
  • Toxic waste from Bender’s disposal business (LH).
  • Central Park (TKOS).
  • Mini fruit-salad tree (“HHRHGB”).
  • Robot 1-X exhaust.
  • Leela’s long jacket(“IR,” “TBBoIC”).
  • Leela’s short jacket (“TH”).
  • PE building in ‘Wizzin.” (“AOI2”).
  • Mildred’s bedroom.
I’m sure there’s a few gazillion more. Can anyone think of any others?

I could wait another 5 pages to do this, but I feel now's as good a time as any.  I'm going to close this thread and split the two conversations (real news and speculation) into two different threads.  If things go as I feel they should, the speculation thread should fill up a lot faster.

Anyway,

The news thread.  Please try to keep this thread mostly clean, so that it's easy to find new news.

The speculation thread.  Go nuts with your crazy theories.  All I ask is that you use spoiler tags when necessary.  Of course, there aren't any spoilers to speak of as of yet, but you can bet that as the release date nears there will be.
