Just be glad we're getting any new Futurama at all. The odds were beaten, and chances are we'll still have some laughs.

You rised our hopes and dashed them quite expertly.

I hope they do some advertising for this release. I don't want it to be one of those direct-to-DVD releases where they don't advertise for it and then they don't do anything more because of bad sales. It feels like soon they'd start some sort of advertising, even if it is just a direct-to-DVD release.

The next I'd imagine we'd hear of the Futurama movies is at the San Diago Comic Con where they will show some animatics. This summer, I forget which month though...

Advertising would kick off soon after I'd imagine...

Incidentally, Billy West announced on his board that he will not make it to Comic-Con this year, meaning he won't be on the Futurama panel.

Which reeks, because I was really looking forward to watching him and John DiMaggio play off each other in person.  :(

We at off-topic don't usually bring our Futurama-related finds to On Topic because we know that the intelligent discussion of the finds will be overwhelmed by/degraded into spamming or "OMG!!1! I L0V3 B1LLY W3ST!!1!11!1" -type posts.

I being serious. The quality of On Topic has gone down so much since the show was canned. Even when I got here in 2005 On Topic wasn't too bad. Now, all that it is is a bunch of games, half of which are the same and seem quite spammy, actual spammy threads, and the "OMG FUTUREAMA"S BACK!!" threads. I only come into On Topic for this thread now. I bet that a lot of the Off-Topic crowd will venture back into the depths of On Topic when the show comes back, as new material will help reinvigorate this section of PEEL.

I don't mean to point this to any one poster in particular, but it's the truth that On Topic hasn't been up-to-par lately. Hopefully the new stuff will change that.

Anyway, Billy not at Comic Con doesn't sound too good, but at least there will be a Futurama panel there. Groening and the Simpsons gang might even be asked Futurama questions. That'd be funny.

I agree with i_c_weiner entirely. However, he should realize that it's up to people like him (and presumably me) to bring up the quality of the board. After all, I cleared up a bunch of disjointed topics in Human Resources when I unified the shipper threads into one. Nixorbo states that he will be doing something similiar soon.

Maybe we should have some sponsors for General Disscussion's quality...

Here's the games that I remember:
  • Framegrab Game: Guess the episode the framegrab is from.
  • Edited Picture Game: Guess the episode the edited picture is from.
  • Snip Game: Guess the episode the snip of a framegrab is from.
  • Trivia Game: Obvious.
  • Questions & Answers: Answer the previous question with a funny response and then ask a new question, either
  • Would You Rather...: Ask Would You Rather questions.
  • Quote Game: Guess the episode of the quote.
  • Tlkuri'h Pibkgltinz Tnzr: Nhx Tlkuri li tl gi DvxvKRRYvn. (cryptogram)
  • What _____ Am I Thinking Of: Obvious.
  • Survivor: Like Fall Madness, in a way. You start off with an entire list of Characters, Quotes, Episodes, etc. and then, through the "Elimination/Survivor game process" dwindle down to one.

In my opinion, any I didn't mention are not really needed. The Fill In The Quote game (which I didn't mention) is extra and could probably get cut easily. The, what I call, "Snip" game could probably get cut as well. The Questions/Answers and the Would You Rather games should also be combined. I haven't done the Survivor game in about a year in a half because it degraded into spamming at one point. I might return to it once new episodes are released, so as to allow for more characters, more episodes, and more etc. to use.

Another idea is to open a "Games" forum. This would cut down on the Games in General Disscussion (obviously), but would also make it so Mods would have a specific place to go with games, posters would know where games were, and we could cut down on stupid spam/duplicate games. It would also organise PEEL a bit more before the (hopeful and supposed) rush of new members due to new episodes. This is possible, considering we had a PEELies forum and a Fall Madness forum in the past, but I'm not sure exactly how this will go. This could really be good for PEEL. I'll post this suggestion in the "Few Questions/Suggestions" thread.

Xanfor, at one point I would come in here, see a new thread, search a topic, post a link in the thread, and hope the thread closed/contacted a Mod about the thread. I hope to do this again, but, at one point, none of the On Topic posters took note of the link and continued with the duplicate thread. That's one reason why we have so many duplicate threads in this section and why it's so confusing to find something in here. But, hey, there's not much that can be done with that.

I hope this doesn't happen in the new Futurama movie:

"We are taking the cyclops girl with us!  Let's see how well the delivery boy and the robot do without her! (evil laugh)"

I hate this cliche where the lead female gets kidnapped and the lead males have to set out and save her and it looks like they're having super fun trying to rescue the girl.  It seems this cliche is always used in cartoons and movies.

1. FOX were all about gaining more control over the show. If they're in charge of the "product" in a more direct way now, how badly will it have been suckified?

2. Considering the fact that FOX gave themselves a massive fanfare, a drumroll and a spin of the proverbial top hat every time they told us all that no, Futurama was not yanked after 4 seasons, it got five, perhaps the "4 movies" isn't as concrete as we are all supposing. Hell, anybody remember the whole "we're going to do 3 Firefly movies" thing?

3. 4 movies is a high-cost excercise compared to a whole season. If they're producing 30 minutes for ever $600,000 they spend, then a season costs between $78,000,000 and $132,000,000 per season on production. Now, a movie lasts 2-3 hours. So per movie they're spending $24,000,000 and $36,000,000. That's $144,000,000 for 4 movies. A lot more than they would have spent on four more seasons. Plus they're not even getting any airtime for their money, 'cause it's going straight to DVD. My guess is they'll only spend the first  24 to 36 mil before they commit to the other 100-odd million dollars.

Remember kids, FOX is all about profits, not about making us happy. Whilst I'd be delighted to have this rumour come true, all I know is... my gut says - maybe.

Thoughts?

1. As far as I can tell, Fox isn't running the show.  I have seen nothing to indicate that Fox is meddling, nor anything to make me believe they will.  They're not broadcasting the episodes, all they have to do is roll around in the money made from the dvd sales and royalties paid by Comedy Central.

2. First off, that was Universal, skippy.  Secondly, Serenity was an actual theatrical release, which costs assloads more money than a direct-to-dvd release.  Thirdly, the Futurama movies are being made all at once, and the production of each does not rely on the success of the previous, as would have been the case with Serenity, which barely broke even.

3. Recheck your math.  For the love of Euclid recheck your math.  Also, a 3 hour animated movie?  Are you off your nut?  Hell, a full 2 hours is more than a stretch.  I would think that 90 minutes would be a much more realistic expectation.

Seriously though, $24-36 mil?  Serenity's budget was $39 mil.  Your math is bad and you should feel bad.

Xan, where was that originally posted?  If not here, then I need to go elsewhere to put the smack on.

Considering all the contradictory information we're getting here - I see it being much more likely that it'll be a new season.

It sounded a lot like they were making three movies and them chopping them up into a season.  Something weird along those lines, which sounds especially weird to me.  I'd rather not have a direct-to-dvd anything personally, and I'd much rather see a new season, which sounds like what's going to be done.  Theatrical releases are much better than direct-to-dvd, and if they made a single theatrical release to wrap the whole thing up, I'd be quite alright with that; note that that isn't what's probably going to happen at all.

Edit: I also wasn't trying to partake in some silly forum war; I actually respect the people on this board regardless of where they spend most of their times, as long as they're not making snide remarks.  Also, I'd love to bring anything to the chatroom, but then again that seems to be your answer for anything you don't want over here Nix.

For the record, I wasn't saying that I don't like On-Topic people, but I don't like the current spam and numerous games of On-Topic, more specifically General Disscussion. I'm an equal opportunity hater lover.

Now, on the topic of new Futurama...
I was watching Futurama on [adult swim] last night, and they announced that they'll be having a six-episode Futurama marathon this Saturday night, and then after that will be showing two episodes of Futurama on Saturdays from on out.

This is the second time that [as] has had a six-episode Futurama mararthon in just a few months. On top of that, after this marathon and Saturday night change, Futurama will be the only show on [as] to have episodes ever night, much less 2 episodes per night. Here's a summary of the scheduling:
Monday through Thursday- 10:30 and 11:00 (its own seperate, continuous run of episodes)
Saturday- 11:00 and 11:30 (beginning June 9th, its own seperate, continuous run of episodes, starting with the second season)
Sunday- 10:00 and 10:30 (the 10:00 show seems to be random, and the 10:30 seems to be its own seperate, continuous run of episodes)

There's a few reasons why [adult swim] is doing so much Futurama:
  • They're getting as much out of Futurama while they still have it.
  • They know that Futurama gets ratings and most other shows, including Family Guy, don't.
  • Anime sucks and doesn't get money.

It's likely a combination of all three. They know that they're losing it at the end of the year, so they might as well bank on its success and anime's suckage while they still can. I bet that, when Futurama leaves, they'll bank on Family Guy and Robot Chicken.

This seems like good news. It'll broaden Futurama's audience a little more for the new episodes DVDs whatevers and proves that Futurama has a strong enough fanbase for the return.

That's odd.  If the TV Guide listings are to be believed, all six of the episodes in the marathon are from production season 4.

I noticed that too when I checked the scheduling on adultswim.com. Here's a list of the episodes in order of the airing tonight:
411 - Where No Fan Has Gone Before
413 - Bend Her
414 - Obsoletely Fabulous
416 - Three Hundred Big Boys
417 - Spanish Fry
418 - The Devil's Hands Are Idle Playthings

The only one that has some sort of continuity with other episodes is Devil's Hands for obvious reasons and Where No Fan just because of Nimoy. Otherwise, they're episodes that don't connect with the other episodes in the series. That might've been a deciding factor in selecting these episodes. It's the right order of episodes, but they exclude 412, The Sting, and 415, The Farnsworth Parabox, which are two episodes that build on the Fry-Leela relationship. [as] might've not wanted two shippy episodes in the line-up.

I watched the marathon and they were a mix of classic episodes including: Mars University, Brannigan Begin Again, Problem with Popplers, and the Nibbler Planet/Hip Joint episode (forgive me I forgot the name).

It is good to know CN values Futurama and the ratings are strong.  These movies have the possibility of doing serious money with all the bent up hype (if marketed well).  It's been MANY years since Futurama got yanked and it is still living large in syndication and online.

No news yet on release date. All that's been released on that is near the Christmas season.

It's odd that both adultswim.com and TV Guide said one thing about the episodes to have been aired last night, and then [as] aired a totally different set of episodes.

Out of all the animated sitcoms, I think Futurama has the best chance of transitioning well to a movie format.  It always had a bit of an epic feel to me, and Cohen had a well-structured long-term plot in mind that I think would really have a chance to stretch its wings in a longer format.
Family Guy was always pretty one dimensional one-joke-after-another so I don't think it is a strong analogy.

To be honest, I'm more interested in the movie format than the "new" episodes!

A topic raised on another board--looks like time travel will be involved, given that we will see "what really happened in the 2000 election," which logic suggests occured after--wait for it--Dec 31, 1999?  So Fry couldn't have influenced things, and thus someone is going back in time!

Unless Al Gore's head simply says something to that effect in the year 3006...

I get that feeling too, but an ‘epic’ is hard to do given the limitations of 1/2-hour TV format.
Epics are better suited to movies, but I don’t know how well an epic movie would fare ‘repackaged’ as a series of 1/2-hour TV episodes...
