It was nominated for Outstanding Music and Lyrics; Ken Keeler is the nominee.  (The song is officially called "I Want My Hands Back.")  It's up against:

The Fairly OddParents: "Wish Come True!"
Sesame Street Presents: "The Street We Live On"
The Simpsons: "Vote for a Winner"
Until The Violence Stops: "Because You Are Beautiful"

The Winner will be announced on the 12th of September.

(I don't know if this news deserves two threads, but if not, I can make a general Emmy thread and these can be closed.)

Futurama is nominated for 2 emmies after its cancellation. Doesn't it says something about the people who cancelled it?

Dang, I was all set to start a "Which Episode Should Win the Emmy?" poll.  But Devil's Hands only got nominated for music...

My god, they couldn't have picked a better episode to nominate? Or even a good one? Fuck.

Wait, what? Do you mean that there's a better musical number in Mcseason 5 that stands a chance of winning? Personally, I loved TDHAIP, and the songs were pretty good. Of course, to each his own, so please don't take that as an insult.

Anyway, I hope that Futurama wins at least one of its nominations, but I doubt it'll be this one. Sure, there isn't much competition to begin with, but I'm sure that Futurama has the least likely chance of winning. But I hope I'm wrong...

I checked the past winners in this category, and they're quite varied, including animation, live action comedies and dramas, and one-time specials.  A song from Cop Rock won.  The Simpsons hasn't won since 1998, and has only won twice altogether.  Last year the winner was something called The Concert for World Children's Day, and the year before that was a song from Family Guy.  Ken Keeler has won twice before, for those two songs from The Simpsons.

So what does all this mean for Futurama's chances?  I don't know.  I'm guessing that "I Want My Hands Back" is quite different from any of the other songs, but it might be so weird that it's a turn-off.  As I said with the other nomination, it'll probably lose, but it's pretty amazing that it got nominated.

While I like "President Wore Pearls" a lot, the "Devil's Hands" songs were the most brilliant musical numbers in years on tv in my opinion.  Definetely hope it wins.  Sesame Street and Fairly Oddparents definetely (well, almost definetley) won't win but there's a chance with that Lifetime show; haven't seen it but it sounds like the ultimate "glurge" song and thus stands a good chance.

I think they're both great episodes. I give Devil's Hands an A, I give President Wore Pearls an A. I'd be happy for either of them to win.  :)

But... "The Sting"? Why does that deserve an emmy??

Remember, only the song was nominated.  The actual episode doesn't matter much, except to set up the song.  So it's not a question of whether or not you like the episode as a whole.

I would prefer if "The Sting" won.  I never want to see the last episode ever again.  It's just a constant reminder of how FOX kicked the show around.  All because it wasn't a show about a dysfunctional family in the year 3000, with the deadbeat dad who'd rather get drunk, an overbearing mother, a goof-off son, a boy-crazy trendy teen daughter or a younger daughter who gets pushed around by her peers.  That is what kind of show FOX wanted Futurama to be.

Kids, kids! The Sting AND The Devil's Hands have been nominated for an Emmy. No need to fight.

I can't see the Devil's hands losing though. I am a self-proclaimed classical music expert and I can tell you that the music is written very intelligently. It even has multiple motiffs (listen to what the strings play when Leela reads "I'll give you my hand" on the contract) And who didn't clench their fists when Fry sang "A deal's a deal, even with a dirty dealer!"
The fact that it's an operatic piece gives it an edge over the rest, imo.

Yeah, the devil's hands is going to win. It HAS to. It has an excellent story and has excellent music. Plus, it's the last episode, it needs some recognition.

I'm not sure people fully understand that "Devil's Hands" is being nominated for its musical number, not the story or anything else.  With that said I'm still rooting for it of course.  It seems like that "Lifetime" thing will probably win though, or offer the biggest competition.

I know it's not being judged on the story, but I was just saying that it has an excellent one.

Here's what the official rules for submission say:

Submitted tape should include the song and enough additional footage before and after the song to give the judges a sense of its context, along with a brief synopsis of the scene where the song appears.

So judges actually only saw the part with the song and maybe a little before and after.  Of course, a voter who saw the whole episode might be influenced by the story.

I wonder what the "brief synopsis" was like.  "Okay, this guy got these mechanical hands from the Devil so he could play this instrument that makes images appear because he wants this girl to like him, but the Devil gave the girl some mechanical ears as part of his plan to get the hands back because he doesn't like having human hands, and then everyone sings for some reason."  Like I said before, it might be too weird for some people.  But it was good enough to be nominated, so who knows?

By the way, search for "Emmy" on Google and one of their sponsored ads will say "'Futurama' on Fox."  Click it to go to a page where Fox lists all of their nominees.  The other nominees have links to their official sites, but of course Futurama doesn't.  It's pretty annoying that Fox advertises that Futurama is on their network when they actually no longer show it.

I find that annoying too. They want to milk every drop of $ and publicity of the show and credit it to them. Thats why they dont sell the rights to the show to groening or C.N.

In other Emmy news, Dan Castellaneta received the Oustanding Voice-Over award for the episode "Today I am a Clown" on The Simpsons. There's no nomination for this award, it's just given out.  It's the third time he's received it.  Last year it went to Hank Azaria, also for the third time.  The award has never been given to someone for their work in Futurama, and of course, this year was the last time it could have happened.  Sometimes more than one person receives this award in one year, but this time it was only Castellaneta.

What the robot-hell is Until the Violence stops anyway?  And how could it possibly compare to

The woman that I idolize
Or the hands of an automaton.
Without these hands I can't complete
The opera that was captivating her
But if I keep them, and she marries him,
Then he prob'ly won't want me dating her.
