The only reason most the shows that they have cancelled failed because of either time slot issues or just FOX is bunch of dumbasses. Or more likely both. Is there any chance the series could come back?

If I'm not mistaken (which I freely admit that I usually am), Fox claimed that Futurama had ratings that were too weak to merit more episodes.  Of course, that was due directly to their own mishandling of the show, but hey, who's counting?  That, and they think it smelled funny. And NOT ha-ha funny.

Time slot issues indeed.  7 pm on Sunday is a recipe for preemption every week from September to January.  At least in the eastern part of the US, where I am.

Well, the main reason is that fox just hate Groening. The only reason the simpsons is still running is 'cause it's like their biggest money maker, which is all they really care about.

What? They cancelled Futurama? Oops, i didn't know that. Forever???

I could understand if they would cancel the Simpsons because after Matt Gröning left they became really bad.

Ah, you're new. Futurama was put on Hiatus just over 2 years ago now. It was still a while until it was officially cancelled though.

No, Matt Groening has no control over The Simpsons now, i don't think he is able to stop it.

No. 1) Matt have said it wouldn't be his style to use The Simpsons as leverage. 2) Even if he wanted to I doubt he has that much control of the Simpsons franchise to pull it off.

As for the original topic of this thread: when Futurama was placed on hiatus back in January 2002 the official reason was that FOX still had more than 25 unaired episodes (due to pre-emptions), in other words more than a seasons worth. FOX told Matt they wouldn't need a new production-season of episodes that year, but would get back to him the next year. Fans new this hiatus notice was the same as a death sentence since the team started to split up. A little over a year later the show was cancelled for good, but without any message from FOX. Futurama simply appeared on a list of shows "that wont be renewed for the next season".

well i'd rather see futurama then the simpsons on Fox, the simpson episodes arent as good as they were and i think futurama is more realistic (the simpson look alomost like cartoon drawing on a paper compared to futurama(just my opinion))

there could never be a good enough reason for cancelling my superior programme. But i think they cancelled it because ratings were dropping but it was obvious they would with that crappy timetable

Cartoon Network would buy it, but it's too expensive for them to produce, their budget isn't big enough for a show as expensive as Futurama (Estimates are about $1,000,000 per episode).

Cost covers:
Writing Staff, Voicing Staff, Computers, Computing Staff/3D modelers, the people that draw the basics and backgrounds, the Offices etc. And aswell as all that Cartoon Network need to fork out for the rights to produce the episodes, i don't think i've seen an estimate for that.
Just look at the number of people in the credits for each episode, it's a lot of people doing some quite highly skilled work.

So in answer to your other question, it's a mix of hand drawings, computers and 3D computer modeling.

I believe that much of the expense is from the 3D work, although I don't think that the price is too much more than other animated shows (I've seen Family Guy estimated in the $800,000 to $900,000 range).

edit: by much of the expense, I mean the part that separates it from other shows, cost-wise.

It's strange somehow, and I think there is only one reason why Futurama was cancelled...because there are not enough peole who watch it (which I cannot understand).

First, when it was broadcasted here, at prime time, there were only a few viewers so it was moved to a very bad time.

I think thats the same problem everywhere, isn't it? There is only a circle of loyal perverts like us.    ;)

It's amazing that Futurama and Family Guy were canceled, but how the hell did King of the Hill not get canceled? Futurama and Family Guy together could probably get 500x the viewers King of the Hill gets. After the Simpsons are off FOX, there is no hope for them.

It would be nice if they could relase a seasons worth of new eps on DVD only, but, that would pose an even hard job funding wise than TV.

Well, Family Guy has been resurected due to strong DVD sales. Production has started up again, and new episodes will air next year. Sad to say, Futurama doesn't have as strong a chance of this happening.

Apparently not.  If that was true, those shows wouldn't have been cancelled, and King of the Hill would have been.

I beg your pardon? They air them in production order, just as the creators (rather than Fox) intended, so they actually do it better. Then again, I'm used to the DVD orders, so I would say that.  :p
