Many fans have their favorite, to me the best episode is the very first.  For had it not been for the first episode, we would not have had an interest in Futurama.  I first saw the episode and I was already hooked.  When I first saw the Simpsons, it took me a few episodes before I got into it, but with Futurama it didn't need to take a few episodes.  I'm not saying that Futurama is better than the Simpsons, or vice versa.  I think they are both great shows.  SP3K introduced us to Fry, Leela and Bender and that can't be taken away.  It was the highest rate pilot on FOX according to Matt on season one commentary.  I can't blame them, no matter how many episodes there are or will be, if Futurama ever gets renewed, SP3K will always be my most favorite.

Space Pilot is very good, and in my top twenty, but I wouldn't call it the best episode of the series, or even put it in my top ten.  Great episode and all, but I think it was surpassed at least several times.

Plus, as great as "Space Pilot" is, I think the first two seasons as a whole don't really compete with the 3ACV and 4ACV runs.

My favorite episode is definetely "Jurassic Bark".

I'm sure this thread has been done.  However I m ay as well throw in my two cents. Yeah Space Pilot is good but the best has to be The Sting.

SP3K is one of the best pilots of any show... Most major characters are already described and introduced (the rest are cleaned up in the second episode).  There's so many things that were thought up at the beginning, it's very well done.

Sorry if this post seems excessively negative, I'm just stating my opinion, which happens to be different to yours   :)

I think Space Pilot 3000 is a good episode, especially for a pilot, but definitely not the best.

Not me. I didn't get into Futurama after seeing the first episode, it took until much later when I watched a friend's downloaded copy of The Problem With Popplers.

True, but that doesn't really prove anything. Most shows introduce the main characters in the pilot, and that doesn't make it great.

Ratings don't equal quality. Especially for the pilot, which most people would have watched because it was made by the creator of The Simpsons.

Can you really say that without seeing these hypothetical 'new episodes' you speak of? Unless your preference is based mainly on the fact that it was the pilot, which seems a pretty dodgy criteria to me.

SP3K is one of the best pilots for a show that I have ever seen but I would agree that the show really gets its best in 3ACV and 4ACV and my favourite episode is still "Luck of the Fryrish".

SP3K is a good episode.  Futurama is better than the Simpsons though, we can only wonder that beauties the production crew would have been pulling out the bag now.

Personally though, I think season 3 carried most of the less enjoyable (but by no means crap) episodes.

I'd say that the 2ACVs were funnier, but the 3ACVs were better as in story. But the two are very close.
As with SP3K, it is a very good episode, in my top twenty at least.

SP3K is a great episode, and one of the best pilots I've ever seen. It managed to introduce the 3 maincharacters (and Farnsworth) and have a pretty good and funny story too. I wouldn't call it the best though, that title belong to "Roswell That Ends Well", but I would place it in my top-20.

Matt didn't say it was the highest rated debut on FOX. John DiMaggio asked if it was, and Matt said he couldn't remember, but they did really well. Much better than FOX had anticipated.

Well, it isn't the best episode ever; that would be "Luck of the Fryrish".

That said, "SP3K" was a great pilot.  I remember the last time I watched it on CN; I was amazed at how good it is, even now.

The first two episodes were both very good.  In some ways, most later episodes did not live up to the potential of the series that the first two showed us.

i think it gets better at season two, although the best episodes are in season 3 and 4 season 2 is my favourite as it was faultless- and the first box set i ever bought maybe its got something to do with that.

Not to sound mad or anything this is my opinion as well. In Answer to your question yes, I can.  There is something that SP3K that got me interested in a way that was completely different than any other pilot.  I had empathy for Fry, because there were times where I felt like him and other times I felt like Bender and so on.  Futurama was like something that tapped into my imagination.  It was as if Matt knew what I liked, tapped into our imaginations and expressed it in Futurama.  If not for SP3K I probably would've said "Futurama is a Simpson's rip-out" like some of my friends said early on when Futurama first appeared.  But thanks to the way SP3K was written and it was the first episode I ever saw, it wasn't a Simpson's rip-out.  It could stand up on its own, it was something I could relate to.  I'm not saying any of the other episodes are inferior, I like Luck of the Fryrish, but SP3K is the foundation of Futurama, w/o that episode Futurama would not be as good as it is today.  Some people say George Washington was the best president because he was the father of the United States.  With Futurama SP3K is the best episode, because it was the episode that started it all.

The Sting was the very first episode I ever saw of Futurama, and that hooked to the series. The Space Pilot 3000 was good, but any good episode can make you like a show, and there are a lot of episodes better than the pilot.

Space Pilot is pretty good, but if that was the first episode I ever saw I would be bored with Futurama. The only reason I really like it is that after seeing episodes from the other seasons first, it's interesting to see Bender develop as a character.

SP3K allowed me to understand where the characters where going.  When Bender stole Leela's ring and drank beer, I knew then what type of character was going to be.  When I saw Fry and Leela look at each other in that same scene, I knew there was going to be a love interest between and that they would face adventures like TKOS, LOTF and others.

SP3K was an awesome episode...specially for a Pilot.  I liked where they inserted the opening theme/sequence...after Fry thaws out..it just seemed like a real good place for it.

Only seeing season 1 and season 4, my choices are limited. I loved SP3K, a great way to start the series, and leaves you wanting more. One of my favourites would have to be "I, Roomate":, even though Matt Groening said that Fox hated it, although most people disagree. I saw "The Sting" the other day, and it's also excfellent. Great, smart story, with good twists. I like Mars University, Fishful of Money and most from season 1, just as much as the ones I listed.

The pilot *is* really good, and does introduce us to the main characters and set up the Planet Express idea well, but all pilots at least aim to do that. What makes SP3K so good is how many ideas were in it that carried on throughout the series. Slurm, the Alien language, the characters personalities didn't change much at all and above all, the quality of the animation and drawings is almost as good as it was in the 4th season.

Is it just me, or does anyone else rate the 2nd episode as one of their least favourite ever? I just hate the part where they are outside the park on the moon, it's just so....boring!

Actually I thought that was an okay part, and add to that the introduction of Zoidberg and Luna Park scenes and you have a really good episode. Then again I always lump SP3K and "The Series Has Landed" together as a two-parter pilot episode, why not? They are both used to introduce the Futurama universe and the 7 main characters.

Luck of the Fryrish was the first episode I saw...  But the first episode is a really good one, definately did a good job of bringing viewers in\introducing them.  Funny episode, but not nearly enough Zoidberg, however.

I like the second episode for its introdutions to Hermes, Amy and Zoidberg and we got to see more of the building relationship between Fry and Leela.  And bender's lines were funny
Bender: "Too much work. Let's burn it and say we dumped it in the sewer."

Bender: "C'mon, it's just like making love! Y'know...Left, down...Rotate 62 degrees...Engage rotor..."
Amy: "Ugh, I know how to make love!"

Bender: "That's her officer, that's the woman who programmed me for evil."

Bender: "Yeah! Well, I'm gonna go build my own theme park. With blackjack and hookers! In fact, forget the park!"

Fry: "Bender you didn't touch the crushinator did you?
Bender: "Of course not a lady that fine you have to romance first."

Fry: "Hey, cool! Dark side of the moon."
Leela: "*gasp* Nightfall is coming. Hurry, before we freeze."
Bender: "What do you mean "we", mammal?"

Bender: "Oh, no room for Bender, huh? Fine, I'll go build my own lunar lander! With blackjack and hookers! In fact, forget the lunar lander and the blackjack! Ah, screw the whole thing."

If nothing else, SP3K shows off that the series was atleast well planned out from the beginning. I mean, what series shows off in the first episode what you're first going to learn seasons later? (This being that you can see Nibbler pushing Fry into the freezer)...

I don't know which one is my favourite.. but SP3K is up around there.  :) So is The Sting, so cool.  :D
