Does anyone think this episode was good to end one of the best animes ever or do you think WHAT THE HELL HAPPENS NEXT! Because personally I think ending it their opens over 10 new doors for possibilities of the real conclusion (Who marries who, What happens to them if they go their seperate ways, etc.)

So basically the question is: Is this a good season finale?

And what show if any will ever substitute Futurama?

It was written as a *possible* ending. They wanted to provide some closure, but still leave it somewhat open-ended. I think they did an excellent job of that. It was a great episode, and as an ending, it served its purpose. Leaving some things to the imagination of the viewer is a good thing.

I really liked that episode.  It provided a good sense of closure on the series, without bringing it to an absolute end.
This way, there can still be Futurama movies in the make!

SuperFry - I wouldn't worry about. Some day, you'll grow up and become a man, and maybe then will your tiny little brain be able to work out just how artistic and meaningful the ending of the episode was.

It was just a normal episode, It just happened to be the one the producers saw fit to be the last aired. Im sure if the producers were told to make a last episode it woulda been alot better.

Leelaholic is most certainly right. It may be the end episode, but it sucked in terms of staying in character and time frame. The Why of Fry would have made a better end to Futurama.

Just my opinion.

@ Asylum: EXACTLY! The Why Of Fry was great. Devil's hands was just too dripping with romance (The Sting had the same problem)

@ Mikey :Yeah. There's no doubt of that. But if The Simpsons ever ends (God forbid) I'm sure they'll get the finale that they so richly deserve.

Crap, sorry about posting the same thing twice - my internet explorer didn't refresh so I didn't think it had got through. My bad, somebody please delete the second one.

And why is The Simpsons ending a bad thing? That train wreck NEEDS to be put to rest IMMEDIATELY.

I think Devil's Hands was a good season finale. It finished well, and although it was a bit wierd and out of character, I think it worked well.

I gotta disagree with people who say it was a crap/sapfest.

It was an excellent episode in my opinion. The great thing about futurama is that when it gets sappy it dosnt get overly sappy to the point where you gag.

At the risk of loseing my macho man apperence, i'd have to say the ending was really sweet and touching. Fry did the best he could to win Leela over and you can only assume it worked.

Still i'd rather that not be the end episode, as in more episodes to come but you know.....

I thought it succeeded very well in what it tried to do.  It was a good ending but at the same time kept things open-ended just in case.

On top of that, it had some great jokes thrown in, plus the opera was awesome.  It just sticks in your head for days.  I still sing it to myself sometimes.

I didn't find The Devil's Hands Are Idle Playthings to be THAT funny, except for this one bit:
ROBOT DEVIL: Can I have my hands back?
FRY: NO!
ROBOT DEVIL: You're not nice!   :laff:

Still, it was a great episode. Stunning, well-written, great music, with some real touching moments. And those of you complaining about the fact that it doesn't give enough closure - get an imagination people! Argh!

Never ever do that again. You almost gave me a heart attack when I read that line. Futurama was never and never will be an anime. Otherwise I might blow up some corporate headquarter in downtown LA.

I think it was a great way to end the show. Funny, touching, a good music number and openended enough to allow for some closure in the minds of fans, but still able to be picked if/when a new season is made.

"The Sting" is a sapfest? Wow, that's the first time I've heard that description of it. But to each his own.

For once I agree with Alex. If you forget about the song, it was more or less a normal, all around episode. With the song, it was more a possible finale. And I, personally, believed it fit. After all, I consider the Fry and Leela plot the basis of Futurama, right after comedy/ sci fi.

The Sting was not a sap fest, dammit! It was a solid, all around episode! It was insane, hilarious, shippy, greatly animated and had a song too! Whoever disagrees can die! DIE!!!1

Ditto. "Anime" is not synonymous with "cartoon". That being said, Devil's hands is my favorite episode. It was kinda out of character; I'll admit that, but the music was soothing and comforting (not to mention cool). And I don't know about those of you who thought it was terrible, but I rest peacefully knowing that Fry and Leela lived happily together for (probably) over 130 years.   :)

Man I left for 1 night and 22 posts.

But me seeing only half the espisode (the second half) didn't understand the full meaning of the episode but enough to rip my hair out and say WHAT HAPPENS NEXT because it doesn't say how Leela and Fry end up.

I thought it was agreat episode and implies they they are getting togeather.  Then again most of the ending episodes made it seem as if fry and leela were getting togeather, but then at the beginning of the next episode they were apart.  Im probly wrong but i think that the holophoner scean where fry and leela walk off holding hands is showing that that is what happens next. (leela does sask what happens next in an opera about her and fry)
Maby i just think this because its what i wanted to happen.

I thought it worked really well. It was only a little sappy for the last few seconds, and they were the last few seconds of the whole show, so it was pretty appropriate. All the stuff about Leela going deaf and Bender's ass added to the 'end' feeling, and I'm glad some stuff was left open. Leela and Fry having sex/getting married wouldn't have been nearly as touching.

ok it's your opinion, and I don't agree with you. IMHO, the problem with TWOF is that it's too Fry centered : too little Leela, less of Bender, no Professor... and that's why it wouldn't have been a good finale.
This isn't the case in TDHAIP. We can see the whole crew, and of course, our three heroes each play a key role. I think this is important in a Finale.

and, according to me, it has very good ending. As I said in the thread "Thoughs on TDHAIP", it worked on me as a Finale of a symphony would !

When they made it I don't think they knew. In a season 3 (i think) commentary DXC (i think) says that Leela gets deafened in season4. I think that ep was in the works or had just been made and they didn't know that it was going to end like that.
i thought it was a good ending. A cliffhanger but the good kind if you know what I mean.
The only bad part was when Bender lost his shiny metal ass *sob*

The thing about TDHAIP, is the fact that there were more subtle closers that made it a finale worthy of Futurama. We had Zoidberg finally getting to insult someone, Bender loosing his shiny metal ass, and Nixon going to hell, ect. These little things made a nice ending to show. It didn't give us the take all war we were expecting to see, but instead we got a ending from the heart.

I thought the show and episode ended abruptly.  I think it should've ended where Fry finishes his opera and he and Leela run and hug each other and cry.  Then the rest of the PE Crew cheers them as they kiss, and Bender gets his shiny metal @$$ back!

That's how it should've ended.  I do agree with the possibility of a Futurama movie, though.  Probably won't happen, but you never know.

The whole episode was too fast-paced. It's hard to explain, but it was as if there was a perfectly good Futurama episode put on fast-forward in order to get all the little things into the 20 minutes.

I thought it would've made a good finale, except for the fact that everybody, especially Leela, was out of character.  I would've expected better from Ken Keeler :/.

I strongly disagree. I think the pace in this ep was just right. Entered each scene at all the right times. Frankly, the only bad thing about this ep is that the characters are a tee bit off character. And that's not that much.

Now, the Sting, with a more fitting ending like Devil's Hands, would be the best finale EVER! I can't express enough how amazing that episode was!

As a serious (and non-hostile  :)) question, what parts exactly did you think everyone was out of character?

Of all the qualms I might have had with TDHAIP (and there are very few), I honestly can't imagine that one coming to the forefront of my mind.

All those who are bitching about "The Devil's Hands...", watch the final episode of Sliders.  There's a great example of how to make a final episode fail on every conceivable level.

I loved The Devil's Hands as both an episode and a finale, to me it was a good ending, especially considering it was a "botched together" ending.

As i said in my "Why of Fry" review, that would also have made a fitting finale, the ending was cute, simple and pretty much perfect.
