Spoilers ahead! Highlight to read.
There is a deleted scene with Fry and Leela talking before she is deafened and while he is writing the opera. It is a shippy scene which involves Fry telling Leela about how he'll ask her out and where he will take her. There may be a couple more. I can't remember, I don't think so though.

Thanks davierock, but I have another question.

Spoilers ahead! Highlight to read.
What does Leela say when Fry says that during that scene?

Basically, what I got as an impression from that deleted scene is it's more of that Farnsworth Parabox style begging for a date. You know that "PLEEZE GO OUT WIT MI LEELA U R TEH ONLIE 1 4 MEE LOL!!!" type stuff that annoys me so much. Nothing new.

Here are all four deleted scenes from TDHAIP on my DVD.
Spoilers ahead! Highlight to read.
Fry: Hey Bender, as long as you know, I have a holophoner recital tuesday. Would you come see me play?
Bender: Depends. Will it take place wherever I would have been anyhow and not interfere at all with whatever I'll be doing?
Fry: No, but I'd really like to have somebody there. Please?

Mrs Mellonger: Phillip, Phillip, Phillip. I'm afraid you have what musicians call "stupid fingers". (Does the hand motion) I'm afraid if you will not practice to make up for them, then, Mr Bender! I simply cannot teach your child!
Bender: Then good-day madam!

Robot Devil: Give me back my hands! These things are always touching me in places!
Fry: Hehehe. Yeah, they get around. But I'm afraid we had a deal. And if we don't stand by our word, what are we?
Robot Devil: Well, I'm the robotic Prince of Darkness and you're some sort of moron. Well it looks like I wasted a bus trip.
Fry: Yes you did.

Leela: I've been a fool. A fully justified, prudent fool.
Fry: Leela, I feel I should give you fair warning. After the premiere, I'm planning on asking you out. You know, on a real date.
Leela: What do you mean "a real date"?
Fry: Well, you know. Like you see in a movie where you're supposed to care if the people die? And after that, a kiss goodnight.
Leela: That sounds nice. (Takes Fry's hands) Aaugh!

That is amazing, Thanks Mole, but why didn't Matt and David put that scene in instead? Maybe they felt Futurama would return and decided to cut that for it would make fans think it really was the end? Is there reason why that was cut out?

I don't have the dvd yet so I don't know if they say anything about it on the commentary, but here's a couple theories one could concoct:

1. It removes from the "mystery" of the ending. One of the beauties of the ending was that its sort of a "imagine the ending" kind of thing where you just sort of pick the ending yourself. Do they get together? They let you decide for yourself. But that scene does specifically imply that they go on a date right afterwards, leaving slightly less mystery.

2. The rest of the plot seems less urgent with Leela's attitude. Fry flatly states that he's going to ask her out, and she says "that sounds nice". We're supposed to see that she's warming up to Fry (and by the end may or may not finally be in love with him after all), but Leela's response there specifically implies that she's basically already fallen for him already.

On the other hand, it's the first time Fry doesn't look incredibly pitiful while asking Leela out.

I'm still glad it was cut, for above reasons.

I guess it sort of makes the last scene more touching since, we still wonder if they will get together. The deleted scene would've ruined the surprise for all of us.

Our "big anniversary" is very close and I would like to bring my two cents on the finale:
-the beginning was sort of hard telling, jokes from lessons to robot hell felt little "disconected" and jokes were kinda forced yet funny at the same time. Also Benderīs attempt to deal with robot devil was something too sudden (well no for us, since we allready knew the plot, but still.)
-After there are simply scene with RD wanting his hands back and clips about Fry being famous, still disconnected. It ends with Hedonismbot scene which contained infamous "Me, realy?" line.
-Episode is somehow better from this moment but there are too much empty moments with potentionel for some secondary characters like Kif or Leelaīs parents.
-Ending was probably the best decision.
4/5

Pardon again, not sure if this has been posted elsewhere, but I was watching this again and I am pretty sure the voice on the phone when Zoidberg calls to order Fry's Greatest Hits (Two records!) is David X. Cohen. All he says is hello, but if you listen closely (and if you know his voice from the commentaries) you'll know it's him.

I feel better getting this off my chest

*Bumped for DVD release*

When I first saw this, I was hardly impressed. However, after another viewing since (plus a few more after getting the DVD), I've completely changed my opinion. I guess I just didn't appreciate it the first time. The pacing seemed too fast, and the whole experience felt like there was too much plot in too little time. Another viewing let me enjoy it quite a bit more.

The plot is extremely clever, and the opera is one of the greatest scenes ever. I mean, it had brilliant lyrics, great humor, people in (hilariously) crappy robot costumes, and Leela in a sexy opera dress. Mmm.

One particular bit from the opera was running through my head all day today...

Destiny has cheated me
by forcing me to decide upon
the woman that I idolize
or the hands of of an automaton.
Without these hands I can't complete
the opera that was captivating her.
But if I keep them, and she marries him.
Than he probably won't want me dating her

Another thing I really like about it is how the ending really left things open. It left you to guess what happened to the characters, which was IMO the perfect way to end the show.

Grade: A+

You know another thing about that deleted scene from TDHAIPT is that it fits perfectly well with my fanfic, Michelle Strikes Back: Ep I, Leela vs. Michelle, which I wrote one year ago. That fanfic is set the day after the final episode and it features Fry and Leela going out on the date that Fry "would ask" Leela after the opera show.

The reason for mentioning it is that I'm glad my story connects with the show. I like my regular Futurama fanfics to be connected and thanks to this deleted scene, I feel Michelle Strikes Back fits even more with the show.

Also, I'm just coming off from watching TWIF's commentary where DXC explains how that episode connects with previous Futurama episodes that he mentions in the commentary.

thank you Matt and David for leaving that scene out.

I jsut saw it yesterday on CN. Great end, blah blah A+ et cetera et cetera et cetera.

Besides all that, is it just me or is Leela's singing line about her "wymsical gender" an extrodinarily out-of-character remark?

But, I suppose, when you're trying to ad-lib a ryming opera with NO previous musical training besides drums, you just have to go with the flow, even if a few things don't quite come out right.

Another thing, I was wondering why Leela even had to go to Beezlebot to regain her hearing, with the advanced medical technology avalible to them. But when you consider that Leela is working a below minimum wage job, and is severly, severly in debt to her employer from a shipment of popcorn she destroyed, she probably has no real hope of ever being able to afford having her ears repaired. Unless Fry uses his newly aquired money for that.

Jsut over-analysing things out load.

Yes, it is, but it's a fairly typical line for a opera/old school musical... which is why I find it so amusing.

But D.Cohen did say they wern't completely sure if it would be the last episode.

I don't actually think the deleted scene does indicate that they would be going out after the opera for sure for the following reasons;

* when she touches his hands she recoils, and although Fry doesn't take a lot of notice of this, it screams harbinger of doom.

* Leela starts to see past Fry's Fryishness because of his artistic soul coming forth. This is her realisation before the deleted scene. fry loses ths somewhat when the devils hands are ironically returned ( don't even correct me, because I know). The events that occur through out the rest of the ep. where Leela really starts to come around are better indicators of a possible post opera date IMO.

And...I had more, but I forget, so you go.

Question: I know they mention it in the DVD commentaries, but my DVDs are in one place and my high-speed internet connection is in another, and this might be my last chance to, uh, "obtain" this. Super-bump powers, activate!

A quote from this ep PazuzuJr used in the cryptogram made me notice something I'd never caught before.

Fry's holophoner album is advertised as having "nine hundred classic themes" and then boasts this as "over 30 minutes of music." 900 themes in 30 minutes averages out to only 2 seconds each. I assume this was a deliberate joke, because, well, I've come to expect that kind of thing from the writers at Futurama.

Yeah, you'd think things have advanced since the days of Harold Zoid and the silent holomovies; those things used huge disks though, so the new ones might still be bulky and low-capacity.

*bump* crash.

This seemed the best thread to ask this. In the "hidden" table reading on the DVD there are several scenes/lines that are neither in the final script or in the deleted DVD scenes. For example, there are extra scenes in the opera involving "Bohemian Rhaspody" and the Robot Mafia. Unfortunately, my DVD player cannot skip back and forth through this audio section.

Has anyone less lazy than me actually transcribed or transfered the audio to WAV format? Thanks.

This IS arguably the best episode of futurama. It certainly ranks near No 1 for me personally. Probably my actual favourite is 'The Sting' that being said I havent intently viewed all of Se3 ( dvd ) intently. Fry clearly EVOLVES as a character ( a person ) is you take him to be real! in this episode, along with ' the sting' and 'three hundred big boys' where he has his caffeine induced enlightenment! anyone how has had a drug induced 'cosmic experience' will totally get this one!
'The why of Fry' is another one where it goes deeper into the depths of fry...yeh I used to think he was just a total waster. these episodes definetly take him beyond this.
