The little discussion on what soccer would look like a thousand years from now got me thinking.  What about other sports?  Baseball turned into Blernsball, basketball looks largely the same, but what about soccer, football, hockey, etc.?

Hockey:  Players play under a huge glass dome, and can only move up and down the rink, and spin.

Tennis would be played with smaller but extendable rackets. Forbidden zones will move randomly around the field, players will wear shoes that allows them to jump 10 feet into the air, colorful swearing will be mandatory and the point-system will be even more illogical.

Tie breaks  ínvolves packs of wolves in some yet undisclosed way (noone has yet dared to get into tiebreaks).

from my post in the other thread:

SOCCER:

- the soccer ball should be particulary heavy and tiled with old fashioned black & white ...pentagons;
- the ball may explode by scoring a goal kicking it on a black pentagon (doubled score point?);
- "robotic things" randomly appear over the grass to confuse the players;
- the grass may be accidentally slippery in some places and sticky in others;
- players who protect goalkeeper can use hands to hide ball when approaches dangerously to goal;
- if they let the ball go down into an hole at the exact center of the field, then multiple balls appear on the field (like in Blernsball!);
- goalkeepers are tied with chains and, of course, the may have cannons in their chests!
(which also mean: atomic mutant supermen are allowed to play!)

  :cool:

but men, think also about the fact that in one thousand years many new, strange, weird, goofy sports could born completely different from ours! (even if it's difficult for me to imagine a more weird game than golf or hockey  :laff: )

think also about evolved martial arts! (martian arts?  :D nahh  :rolleyes: )

Well on FF10 (which i think is set in the future!) they have a game called "Blitzball". My friend is explaining to me via MSN. She describes it as "A sport played underwater, there's five members on each team, and a goal keeper. The aim is to get the ball into the opponents goal. You carry the ball with your hands". And that it's similar to football (somehow). I suppose they could play a similar sport in the future.

On the other hand they could play rugby in no gravity conditions. That would be cool.

How about a good old fashioned space race?

Or a variant on F1. (Comments from Z85 expected)

Javelin and pole wault in microgravoty would be fun.

Football would include more colored cards. Yopu could be greencarded for acting, purplecarded for doing a double hammering (see appendix G), orangecarded for consuming less than the mandatory 3 drinks during halftime etc.

Zed ain't here at the moment, so I'll fill in for him.

F1 RULE CHANGES:
1)Drivers will be replaced by androids who have perfect driving skills, but are monotonous and lack personality.  (Michael Schumacher is exempt for obvious reasons)

2)The slowest cars will be placed at the front, and the fastest at the back, leading to more huge accidents excitement at the first corner.

3)If the field becomes too spread out, a tractor or school bus will enter the circuit at random intervals in order to bunch up the field again.

4)Drivers are allowed to carry weapons of mass destruction.  That slow car blocking your path?  BOOM!

football: see the scene in starship troopers

boxing/wrestling: same, but with gorrilas and octopus.

Light cycle races and crazy frisby, both from Tron, are probably a popular sport but they haven't made it in the show yet.

I think there should be a multisport combination, for example, you have a tennis racket in one hand, a lacrosse thingy in the other, a ping pong bat attached to your shin, a dartboard on your back and a paintball target painted on the top of your helmet (you WILL need to wear a helmet). Paintball guns will stick out of your chest (2 in the case of women!). There will of course be all the necessary balls in the arena (see below) as well as footballs, rugby balls, huge sticky balls that can trap several players at a time.

The Arena will be a massive random gravity spherical dome made from a transparent trampoline like material (gravity will be controlled by a monkey with a button, he won't be super intelligent in any way).

Points are scored by......eh.............
Well I haven't thought that bit out yet.....

WHAT!! YOU THINK ALL THAT CRAP JUST CAME OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD??

Well it did, do I win a prize? (whew!)

Curling...
the brooms wouldn't be brooms, they'd have be heaters on sticks, with beer dispencers. And there wouldn't be ice, just teflon cover floors.

- Football (American) -
Fair passes are not allowed, and the ball weighs 300 lbs. (Just like that Super Bowl LXVIII commercial!)

- Soccer -
Each goal will be worth 200 points in order to garner excitment with more Americans.
The ball will shoot up from a hole in the middle, and there will be special jumping pads for some super-acrobatic kicks.

Frisbee: one half of the frisbee has blades on it, so if you catch the wrong side...

Tennis: tennisrackets and -ball replaced by basbeballbat and -ball.

I'll do F1 my own way when it comes to my fanfic, I won't bore you with the details right now, but otherwise the way I see the FIA going by 3000 Formula One will be something like...

Quote
International Federation of Automobiles rules for Formula One. Revised 2731 (altered 2979):

Cars will be teathered together and follow each other around at an interval of 17 meters, no car is thus allowed to get too fast or too slow as this might invoke overtaking or even more worse collision. (   :nono: ) Race order is determined prior in a meeting with [the] team owners[see*]  If one car has a mechanical problem the other car(s)[see*] must pull into the pits at the nearest oportunity and wait for the faulty car to be fixed, even if this requires changing of engine assembly/suspension/gearbox/transmission. If just one car of one team infringes these rules by 0.01 x 10-40cm then the entire team is disqualified and the other teams get a bonus point and first say in next race order meetings[see*] Race fans expected to pay solely for upkeep of the race circuits.

* Certain adjustments were made in 2979 as it turned out that there was only one team left.

Don't worry, my Fanfic has lots of cars pelting around at several thousand miles an hour - except at corners though, where they're not doing several thousand miles an hour...   :p

SOCCER The pitch would be circular, with four goals, at 3,6,9 and 12 o'clock. However, there would still be one ball, except for at one point in the game (a random time) when 3 more are added in. At this time any goal scored with the original ball (which would be identical to the other balls) would earn you double points. Also, at another point in the game some air would come up through the pitch, making the ball, or balls float, like on those air hockey games. These "random events" would only last 5 minutes.

Also, there wouldnt be a "proper referee," just video evidence things.

F1 racing would have become podracing. Sebulba would be the Micheal Schumacher of the time. Anakin would be a legend.(Legend of the dog faced boy). F1 racing would still be just as suprisingly dull for such a dangerous and fast sport.

Long jump with lead shoes, women wear cement shoes.

Caterpillar race. 15 feet long genetical engineered caterpillars, race a track, 527th feet decides the winner. Tiny jockeys ride the caterpillars. Actually Tiny Iota went on to caterpillar-racing after his great Blernsball career ended.

hey this future-F1 gives me an idea for an episode: what if the professor want the Planet Express ship to race in a kind of "death race" to win something he wants or just for a question of honor like for that basket match in "Time keeps on slipping"? For the occasion he may upgrade the Planet Express to make it faster and powerful to face the race...

Lawnmowing:
Each team has a tractor-like racing lawnmower, equipped with Carmageddon goodies.  There is a large grassfield in the stadium.  They are given a limited amount of time to mow as much of the opponents part of the field as possible
To make things even more exciting, there are randomly exploding mines.  They don't always explode when hit.

A soccer variant on the mowing game:
No grass to be mown, but a giant ball to be put in the opponents' goal.

Cricket have not changed at all. It still remains one of the most confusing games of all times, with a score system that goes over the head of 99.99% of the population.

Thanks to auto-targeting, gyro-stabilizers and other sophisticated systems, shooting and archery have disappeared as a sporting event. When 99.95% of the competitiors in the 2872 Olympics shot perfect rounds people realized; what's the point.
