I would be willing to bet that it costs less to make an episode of futurama than it does to make the simpsons.  Why?  Yes, it is expensive to do computer graphics... expecially when you start.  After you get the system up and running, it does not cost the huge amount every episode as the first couple do.  The simpsons cast get payed a huge amount -- I'm talking millions of $$$ per episode for them all (info from a while back when they went on strike around season 8 or 9, and made a deal).  Plus there are at least 2-3 times more people working on the simpsons, compared to futurama... actually, looking at the numbers, futurama has tons less people than any other show on sunday.

Maybe The Simpsons cost more (which I'm sceptical about) but The Simpsons make millions more $$$ in merchandice, everything from socks, magnets, crackers, calenders, car acsesories, playsets, boardgames, Candy, Clothing not to mention huge DVD and video sales.

Futurama has about 5% in the merchandice market compared to The Simpsons.

I just wrote two letters (Letters, NOT e-mails) and I suggest other do so as well.

Send the letter to:

Ms. Gail Berman
President
Building 100 Room 4450
10201 W. Pico Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA 90035

And

Mr. Sandy Grushow
Chairman
Building 100 Room 5110
10201 W. Pico Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA 90035

These are Fox big-wigs.
I don't thikn we really need to worry, because overall, Futurama does get decent ratings, especially considering the slot it is in, the lack of advertising and the infrequency of it's airing.

Seriously though, write a letter, they get noticed, emails don't amount to much.
I personally think they should put Futurama on instead of The Simpsons which only makes me chuckle about 1 out of every 4 episodes.

To the dude who said that Futurama could be picked up by Comedy Central, I doubt that will happen, it's not just a matter of the show being aired on Fox they also own all the rights to it as well.

And to Sarge, what would you do if Futurama was cancelled? What do you think you'd work on next?

At the same time, they can support "hot genre" shows like the chamber or temptation island because they will have a large audience by vertue of the type of show they are (I personally can't stand either genre).

Well, I have a fantastic idea. Why dont the Futurama animators just rig together some shallow characters, put them in a room and attach a 1 minute scene to each ep, then people can ring up and vote the junk characters off and we can enjoy the real ep beforehand.

Well, you can enjoy it     :(

Edit: I did it!

I am 99% sure Futurama will reach at least season 5 because I bet the video game developers got FOX to put in writing that the show would be still on air by the time they released the game(3Quarter this year at last count)
Also, they will want it to go into syndication.
AND if they cancel it Matt Groening will be mad and so might spoil FOX's chances of the Simpsons going on til the year the 3000 which I'm sure they'd do if they could!
ALSO (and I think this is the key reason can't be arsed to confirm it yet) they don't have to make a descision as early as last year because there's such a backlog of episodes. That means they don't need them to start making more eps now in time for the fall schedule because they've already got some ready...

You have some good points reedy2, you are a legend and I bow down to you. Anyway, I do REALLY want to believe you but that would be wishfull thinking. I do think you are at least 50% right but your looking on the bright side which is always a good thing, but recently I've seriously been worrying about Futurama to the point of almost crying and being sick.

I really wish more episodes would hurry up and air in the US because that is my only reasurance, and I can no longer trust what FOX say up until the point where they actually air an episode because of what they did with "Godfellas".

Looking on the gloomy side, many video games get abondoned part way through developement and if Futurama was to finnish then so might the game. I'm also worrying that even the remaining season 3 episodes will not finnish airing by summer. It has been known for TV serieses in the past to be pulled from TV halfway through a season because the ratings were'nt good enough and other programs could fill the space getting higher ratings which the advertisers like.

If worst came to worst then most of season 4 would never air!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I pray for the love of god that this cannot and will not happen, as for season 5 I am very doubtfull and am hoping that season 4 airs let alone season 5. *Crys his head off*

Look on the bright side Otis: They'll release them all on DVD eventually. And the UK will get them first! Mwahahahah  :evillaugh:

Sorry, USA, hope that didn't send you all rushing for your AK-47's....

I still cannot understand why Fox is treating Futurama that way. They spend money on every production series they buy. And TV business is (like all business) all about money. So if they don't want to continue showing Futurama, why producing more episodes? That does not make sense. They have to earn money with the show so either they show it themself or they sell it to another network. Anyway I'm absolutely sure we are going to see those episodes that are produced untill now - and given the fact that they continue producing it, we'll get more Futurama. The question is just WHEN. But if Fox chose to sell it to another network, I guess things can only get better. Maybe that network is more interested in earning money.

hmm, i don't know FOX very well, cause I don't live in the US, but is FOX a real tv-station, or just an organisation (don't know a better word) who makes programs and sells them to tv-stations?

And why don't they just air new episodes (so I could download them  ;)  or place it on another houre? I mean, is FOX stupid or is FOX stupid?

I just hope that soon, we get some "good news" from them... otherwhise, they can bite my ***** ***** ***!!!!!

The fox company is a network of affiliates; what this means is, there is a head of the company.  They decide what to make, and where the funding goes, to different companies.  These companies will make episodes of various shows, and give them to fox.  Fox in turn gives it to their affiliates (individual television stations that only air fox).  There are many of these; new york, kansas city, mineapolis, basically any large city will have a fox affiliate.  So in that sense, there is no fox tv station; but there are tv stations that ONLY air fox shows.  All major networks do this; unlike cable shows, that are actually the company (comedy central, etc).

Quote from CGEF

I hoped you all enjoyed the rerun of Bendless Love cause it'll be a while till you see some futurama again

Fox will air most of its regular schedule against the Olympics, primarily with new episodes. And the network, which had pledged to tone down its reality programming, will air at least one reality special as Olympics competition. On Feb. 22, Fox will air the two-hour special When Animals Invade Your Home vs. the Olympics' figure-skating exhibition event. The network had also planned to air Glutton Bowl: The World's Greatest Eating Competition on Feb. 21 against the Olympics' women's figure-skating finals (typically the Games' top-rated event), but Glutton Bowl's airdate was undetermined at press time.

So we will probably (there could be reruns, but we can't guarantee anything) have no Futurama till after the olympics, which is a grim day .Post your comments...

I'm worried about something I read at CGEF today. If you go to the ubdates section onto the framegrabs for Love & Rocket update and look at the comments, you'll see that somebody has said that FBC has cancelled the show! It's probably a false acusation but now I'm all worried again.

Like Kryten said on CGEF, let's not panic.

The season 1 DVD set is just out, and according to various lists it did pretty well, saleswise. That should give the FOX execs a hint that Futurama actually have a big fanbase. From what I've heard, the new episodes has done reasonable well in the ratings, when taken into account the shabby threatment FOX has given it, and the lousy timeslot it has. So I'll chalk that one up to Internet rumours for now, Otis.

Well, this oughtta burst your bubble.

Futurama isn't being picked up for another production season. Most of all the shows I worked on for season 4 will be known as season 5....if they air them next Fall ( I mean, Winter).

The day we feared has come.  It's not too surprising.  The narrow-sightedness of Fox is due to their primary function, making money.  I quote Lisa Simpson when I say, "You'll never go broke appealing to the lowest common denominator."

Am I pissed?  Yeah, but I'm sort of relieved.  I have no reason to watch Fox now that Family Guy got axed, Futurama's on its deathbed, and The Simpsons is in the crapper.  There is no pain so great that you can't swallow hard and move on.
