<h3>Thread Page Limit</h3>

After suggestion from Kryten and recent slow-downs, I move that we incorporate the 20-page limit to all forums.  I've already started.

Threads over 20 will not be closed, they will be deleted on site.  If you delete it, you will be the one responsible for restarting it.  Simply make another thread with the exact name, there is no need to detail that it is a sequel.  Imagine it as one big thread, just in 20 page chapters.

If you come across any large closed threads, please delete them.

Threads that you feel may be of some historic importance can be left closed and debated later.

Thank you.

It makes sense to me if it is causing problems for the board, most large threads aren't about anything that serious anyway.

It might be an idea just to lock then until mArc says he wants them deleted, if this were a poll though I'd vote to delete them.

NO! Best Futurama Quotes was where i made my first ever post, and it's deleted!
So you're going to keep all these crap small threads closed but not deleted then? Makes perfect sense to me.

No, small threads are closed so their owners can understand why and not ask questions if they don't know what the hell happened.  After that they can be deleted, notification is the only reason small threads are left alive.

And I'm sorry if I somehow ruined your PEEL history by deleting the thread.  But it's either that, or a PEEL crash in the future.  So take it the way you can get it, I say.

I have to agree with aslate. Why delete them? Is there not a function in UBB to archive topics to static HTML pages, and create a static Big Old Archived Threads page? It decreases how much Perl the server has to run and decreases the database size.

Has mArc approved of this, or is this a temporary solution till he comes back?

Please only lock till i have had some thought about it. For now there don't seem to be problems.

No real time to do anything about it now.

So . . . are you telling us to delete on sight, or just to detain until further notice?

I thought about it ... Just leave big threads locked once they hit the 20 or so page limit. Big locked threads have just the same impact on peel-stability as locked small threads. In other words: No change of policy please.

Might I make a small suggestion.  Delete the last but one of the longer running threads, like the previous Test and Jukebox threads.

Once you have two or three closed, there's really no need to keep the earlier ones.

I've yet to see someone search for some comment made in an earlier test thread. Probably never will. Have the current one open, the last one closed but still there, and the third last deleted.

I agree even further with Chump. I hardly know of anyone searching through old PEEL threads at all. I don't think we need to keep the really old ones, because they aren't serving any use.

The problem is if you delete too amny threads, newbies will think it's a dead forum.

"2 year old with 1700 members and only 32 threads/300 posts in General Discussion and 50 threads/800 posts in Off-topice. I'm moving on."

Or they'll wonder why we didin't spot Leela's parents in "I Second That Emotion" and start a thread about it. Only to be meet with lot of moaning "We know that." "So what else is new?" "Thank you Captain Obvious."

I can agree on the test threads if they are a major problem, but otherwise I agree with mArc about just locking them.

That's a good point about thinking it's dead Teral, however they could just see by the dates of "last posted" that there are postings still going on.

Also, I would think it's unlikely that topics about certain blunders would reach 20 pages and need to be closed. Sure, it might be mentioned in a "general weird scenes" thread, but I doubt any newbie will search through that whole thread to see if it had already been mentioned, that is if that thread was open.

I quite often do a search in the old stuff, when the old off topic was about 50 pages long if a bit bored it was fun to read through the old stuff  smile

Mitsui has it dead on, most discussionary topics like "Did you notice..." never end up being closed, they just get buried. I'm talking mostly about threads that don't need to exist anymore. For example: Test Threads, WHat Are You Eating/Drinking/Watching/Reading/Doing/Listening To threads, Survivor threads, and Drunken PEEL user spawned threads.

Theres no need to keep them around, especially the last ones. Why do I need to sift through tons of those if I'm actually trying to find something?

I don't see any reason for deleting threads outside of Offtopic, it's not as if any of the other furums are anywhere near big enough to crash PEEL.

Personally, I never ever look through old threads.  I have a hard enough time reading all the new ones whenever I decide to start posting again.  But, I think that threads of frequently asked questions should be kept for reference to the newbies.  i.e. the weird stuff, I saw so and so, what song was that?  And maybe some of the interesting stuff like Futurama Survivor just so they get an idea of what cool stuff goes on.

Newbies would just jump in and post whatever they wanted. They wouldn't pay attention to the old threads. When I joined, it took ages, so I hung around and learned that PEELers  hate those kind of threads so I didn't start any. That' why I'm so popular today!

I move that all posts that consist of only smilies in the main body, with

No, seriously... I don't see the point of that, unless the post consists of one long quote or a big image, and then a smiley.

I think its ok if you are posting a picture, as long as its relevent to the topic. Ie, a picture in the the picture thread with a laughing face is ok. So is posting your fan art with the flirt smiling, assuming its either a sexy leela/amy or a horrbily unsexy mom, prof, or Zapp.

I also propose that any topics that involve the word America be deleted on sight because they COULD be slagging off America. Also Moderator's names should be censored because they COULD slag off moderators otherwise.

Please. It's all about context. One smiley posts can be spam, but sometimes they are just perfect. I have enough problem with the unwritten rules already. I want them written damnit.

I disagree. THe point of posting is to contribute something to the thread.

 laff

is filler, and contributes nothing except that you know how to make smilies. And maybe, you know how to quote people. Theres no need for those posts.

Welcome to PEEL, etc.,etc., if you haven't already seen it, check out the PEEL faq. At my own risk I will answer your question here. Yes, [-mArc-] is still quite around and no Mod will ever change the old stuff on PEEL. It's kinda like... a tradition to keep the old stuff around here now. The only change I've seen is the "site of the week" up top. Don't expect new stuff, except the "news" section, k? Now enjoy your stay here.
