The Leela Zone's my homepage. One day I'm hoping to open it up and find it working again. Ah well. And actually now I think about it this all started when Graham said he'd be doing less work and setting up some minor Webmasters/mistreses(I can't spell and I know it)

I have megabytes worth of other's fanfiction.   ;)
For my personal consumption only  :D

I'd love to help, but shouldn't you get the fic author(s) permission first?

Well, some of the things Venus pointed out in her review raised extremely important points, so I'm desperate for other people's opinion on the matter.  :p

I'm still not 100% relaxed on TLZ just yet, once I see a new update, I'll feel better. Not that that's demanding anything, but when one comes, I can believe it may be back for good (or for the near future at least)  :)

Okay, long story short... it's back up at the moment because it's the start of the month. Seems that our host is being rather picky about our monthly bandwith usage lately, so the more people visit, the quicker the site'll go down again in the latter part of each month.

Rest assured, we're looking into making sure this doesn't continue for long.

I posted today on why we don't update. As for the bandwidth usage: the new server allocated us 50GB per month. We've already used 22GB in *ten days*. We  pretty much need a solution to this hosting problem or the site may very well end up dead for real.

An e-mail that I just sent to Leandro after reading the message in the update section:
----------------
Man, I hate reading what you posted on FM/TLZ; I just found Futurama this May and have fallen in love with the series.  I lucked out and found your site and PEEL; the enjoyment that both sites have bought me can't be expressed in a mere e-mail.  Let's just say that I've enjoyed everything about FM; the fan fics, the graphic guides to the eps, the fan art, everything.  It will be a shame if it goes down forever - there is no other site with the content FM.

I would offer my services but I'm a medical person, not a techie, so I would be more in the way than I would be helping.  Let me just say 'Thanks' for keeping the site up and going as long as you have.

I have mentioned to Teral about possibly instituting a area to the site to be a 'pay site', but he stated that would be going against what fan sites are about. (A noble mindset, Teral - plus internet folk tend to balk at pay sites, except porn and 'filthy, filthy chatrooms').

I hope that maybe one of the fans read your update and has a trick or two up their sleeve that can save FM; once again it would be a shame to let it languish not updated or worse, die.

Thanks for the enjoyment!

--------

So if the bunch of us put our heads together, can we find a way to assist Leandro and company to keep from losing yet ANOTHER site to the ravages of time?

Well Venus, according to Teral, the server that they are using now is suppose to be one of the best for FM's purposes. I'm sure that 40 gigs of bandwidth and 800 megs of storage space isn't too cheap to rent; and running a site is time consuming affair - Graham has stated that webmasters get enormous amounts of spam and virii sent to them daily.

I guess that there are no easy fixes, but we can hope for one.

I see that FM is having some deep problems and I know that is hard to find a Host that can meet your requeriments (I also had problems with the lack of bandwith).
I was looking for cheap hosting, and I end up with one called  http://www.bluehost.com :
Best mySQL Database Host
FREE Domain Included
100 Gigs Bandwidth
4 Gigs Web Space, for $6.95 month.
(Price from http://www.100best-free-web-space.com/)

I know that there is a lot more issues than jus changing hosts... :s so I hope to see FM running again shortly

One option that was given in the update on the site was the possibility of having to delete some old content. If it absolutely has to come down to that i'd suggest deleting the art and fiction that's rated the lowest. Then at the very least they could advertise quality content. But that would also involve fixing the rating system so that people could only rate a story or picture once. Otherwise artists and writers would go and vote for themselves over and over as well as rating everyone else lowly to wreak their scores.

Why not delete sections? Like, I didn't even know there was a chat room in that site for a long time. And I almost never go to the section about the blueprints of PE. Would that clear more room? Cause I think that if we deleted personal things, such as fan fiction and art, some people would be insult and hurt. (Trust me I wish some of those artist would get lost). I haven't been to FM for a while so I can't be very specific about parts of the sites that seem least useful. But I'm not the greatest techie so I wouldn't know what would or would work.

There are things afoot behind the scenes going on to keep  FM:TLZ going.  ;)

Delete content? BLASPHEMY!  :nono:

I know for a fact Leandro has an offer in-had to pay for a year's worth of webhosting to keep FM:TLZ afloat.
And, just for the record, no, it is not from me.
Leandro has not accepted the offer, because (as I understand it) he thinks it's unfair to burden one person with the entire cost.
Fine. I can respect this.

As Ralph, and MOLe alluded, would anyone besides me be willing to donate money to FM:TLZ for web-space to keep it going?

@ the FM:TLZ crew:
Thank you x 10e19 for keeping FM:TLZ a "going concern."

Too many of us take for granted what is available on a daily basis and don't think about it.  Everybody knows by now that I'm a noob - I've only known Futurama since May 2005 - the only sites that I know about are FM/TLZ, Can't Get Enough Amy Wong, CGEF, the adult Turanga Pages and PEEL.  There may be some minor sites, but they aren't updated, so I consider them dead.  A lot of people have taken time to welcome me to the community, and Teral informed me just recently that at the peak of Futuramamania, there were dozens of sites running with frequent updates - that there were sites dedicated to each of the characters (even Zoidberg!).  We're now down to a handful of active sites - these sites are the only thing that keeps the Futurama community connected and alive.  This is really sad that so many sites have died, but running a website takes knowledge, time and money.  Some people get tired of running the sites, others find other priorities in life (marriage, children, health concerns, etc), so the site falls to the wayside.  Unfortunately, that leaves us in the community without the diversity that several sites can give.  The point of my rambling message is:  How many of us are quick to point out that a site doesn't update often enough, or may go offline at times, or complain about the content that doesn't suit us, yet have never sent the webmasters and owners a quick note thanking them for their efforts (time, knowledge and out of pocket expenses) to give us the gift of using the sites for our entertainment?

I know that I'm vocal about thanking marc for this site, and for the mods for being hardasses to keep PEEL running (and yes, even I have had threads killed - the mods have their reasons so I don't take it personally).  I also have been in contact with Leandro and thanked him for his efforts and offered my assistance (what little I can offer) to keep FM/TLZ running.  It would be a shame if we lost one of the few large, still alive sites; be proactive in trying to save our sites - let the webmasters, the administrators know that their efforts are appreciated.  A little 'Thank you' here and there may be what keeps a frustrated webmaster from saying 'Screw the site, I'm going with  blackjack, and hookers'.

So a big 'Thanks' to the guys of FM/TLZ from me.  Leandro, Kif, Terel, Graham (and any others that I missed) for your time, efforts and sacrifices to make the site what it is.

The same thing to be said at this site, PEEL.  Thanks to -marc- for being the administrator.  Thanks to Tweek, Nixorbo, Kryten, Velour Fog and the other mods; you guys patrol this board and keep threads on-topic; close inappropriate threads and basically keep the peace - without you guys PEEL wouldn't last long as civility would break down; a handful of users would destroy this board that so many appreciate.

Think about it people - how many of us don't think about and don't appreciate the efforts of others?  I know I was one until recently.

End of sermon (Ralph steps off of soapbox).

hahahahahahaha.  I can see in my (small) mind that verbal exchange happening on an ep.  i can also see the disgusted look on Leela's face.

I wonder if Leela's porn page resides next to "Amy Wong Naked" pictures (although it's only Amy's head on somebody else's body - Leela: "HEY!" ).

Now I take my leave - 'Parasites Lost' is about to come on Cartoon Network.

That's correct. The hosting we're looking at costs $25 a month if paid for a year, and I don't want to have someone pay $300 for us, even if he's willing to.

I'm *trying* to get a donation box up in the site; if 60 people put $5 each, it's the same result without stressing anybody's pockets. But the thing is, it won't accept my credit card (apparently it's not cleared for international usage, only within the Mercosur) so I have a question for anybody using PayPal here. If my account is "unverified" (without a credit card entered), can I still use the donation box to collect money, and pay a big amount (said $300) to the hosting service? Or do I need to have the account verified in order to pay that much? It says something about a $100 withadrawl limit, but contacting someone in PayPal to clarify this little point has been a bit of a challenge...

Oh, and another point: people have asked why sections like the Framegrabs are off the site. This is why: after one C&D letter from Fox or another, SmooveNet told us they'd keep on hosting us *if* we ditched those sections with content straight off the series. So we had to put them in another server. This is another reason (besides the scripts not working) why we have to find *another* host: SmooveNet's hosting gives us 150GB/mo for $25 as well, but if we're going to annoy the visitors asking for donations, I want to make sure they get ALL the content of the site, including all the grabs and sounds that currently are on a "most likely won't work" schedule because they're hosted in other, smaller servers.

Just to bump up this idea, I'd certainly put in some money.

After all, some people give money to _churches_ EVERY WEEK OF THEIR LIVES!   :D Next to a commitment like that, $5-$15 a year isn't a burden.

Hey, Leandro can just rename FM/TLZ to 'The Church Of Robotology' and any donations can become tax deductable (at least here in the USA)...
