Ofcourse it sucks that Planet Express had to close (damn those FOX lawyers to hell), but Anders and the PE.dk team didn't really have a choice.
If they complied with the requests in the C&D letter, their site would've been gutted. All the cool content would've been gone, and they would've been left with fanart and episode reviews from fans.
The alternative was to face FOX in a court of law. FOX is a multinational corperation, the PE.dk crew is average fans, with a love for Futurama so great they created PE.dk, and in turn free promotion for FOX. The legal battle was decided even before it began, there is no way ordinary people can fight large corperations. Even if they win in the end, the long, drawn-out process would've bankrupted them.
And the Danish parlement recently thightened the legislation on copyright issues, so it's a question whether even the fair-use clause for paraodies could be used.
In conclusion, I don't think PE.dk had to be shut down, but FOX did. And that was all it took.

Yeah, Anders posted a message about it on the site. He hoped to return as a fanart-based site. Let's hope for the best.

Considering another well known Futurama Site has somehow survived 2 C&D's that I know of, it is a real shame that PE closed it's doors, anyway I do hope Anders makes a return, because the site should be something worth waiting for based on PE's look and feel.

--Missy I agree. Fansites promotes the show, that's why it's so bloody stupid of FOX (and impossible for us mere mortals to understand) why FOX get this itch in their C&D finger from time to time. A few months back, they even managed to bring down one of the behemoths of the Simpsons online community, "Evergreen Terrace" (equal in stature to CGEF of the Futurama community).

[David Attenborough] And here we see major corporations in their natural habbitat. Here we see the might News Corp in the wild stalking it's prey, futurama and its fan sites.
The mighty beast slays its doomed prey like a lion on gazel leaving only the fanart for the Hyenas to bicker over...
and so goes the law of the jungle... err... corporate age [/DA]

If you don't comply, they'll either drag your ass into a court, or ask the hosting company to delete your site. The hosting companies cave easy to pressure. They're responsible for the stuff on their serves, and can be sued as well. They have a business to protect, so if the prize to protect this business is to delete your site, they'll do it in a heartbeat. Some hosters have more courage, and refuse tom comply, because the fair-use clause can be envoked, but they're a minority. Just how I understand the situation, may be subject to change.
