Season 3, no question there. Season 4 is a bit lacking in the information department, too much goofing around.

Season 3 is the worst season episode wise, but the best commentary wise.

The worst season? "Parasites lost", "Roswell That Ends Well", Luck Of The Fryrish", "Amazon Women In The Mood", "Time Keeps On Slipping", "A Leela Of Her Own", "Godfellas", top-10 contenders all of them, and that's just the creme of the creme. I think season 3 is the best both commentary and episode-wise.

Ofcourse it's just my opinion.  ;)

Season 3 has the most episodes, hence it has the most commentaries, hence overall it is the best for commentaries.

The AOI2 commentary is really really funny, and that's just an example.

Well, oddly enough b&f, if you check out the commentary to A Leela Of Her Own, you'll find the answer to your question.  ;)

I'm suspending judgement until I see the rest of the S4 commentaries.

Yeah, I think the 3rd Season has the best balance of what makes the audio commentaries great. Season 1's were good but too quiet, Season 2's were slightly better but still too many pauses (especially on Cryonic Woman. I really wanted them to tell me what they were thinking when they wrote that.  :nono: )

By Season 4, they've finally got the hang of keeping dialogue flowing but for some reason the commentaries just don't feel right, which I think is down to a lot of reasons: not as much John DiMaggio (and even when he is there, he just seems a lot more forced this time round), little diversity of commentators (i.e. all writers/directors/actors, no 'other' staff like Scott Vanzo, Paul Calder or Chris Tyng) and also the fact that they do many commentaries before they've even aired, which is kinda limiting in terms of personal response to each episode. That said, they're not unlistenable, but I just think the Season 3 commentaries have more character overall.

The problem with Season 4 was many of the eps were fairly recently made, so there were no little anecdotes to tell which happened over the few years since it was made, as in Seasons 1-3.

I thought it was more the fact that they hadn't aired rather than had recently been made. They had little fan feedback to respond to.

IMO, I would have waited a while longer for S4 (which hasn't been released in R1 yet) if they had had the commentators record the commentaries after every episode had aired on FOX.

I would've liked to have heard some of the other voice actors too, especially Dave Herman and Frank Welker. I know Frank is a busy guy, but to hear him on a commentary would've made my month.  :)

I too would've loved to hear from more people, particular the Rough Draft crowd (Claudia Katz, the Vanzo's, Tyng, etc), in the 4AC commentaries, aside from that more actors, like Katey Sagal, Tress MacNeille, the two mentioned by MoV above, etc.

Not Gregg Vanzo. If you listen to the Season 1 commentaries, he had very little to say. Scott Vanzo provides a lot of good trivia on the 3D stuff but he never seems to get into the spirit of the commentaries like some of the other directors (Sheesley, Avanzino, Dieter). And if we're mentioning voice actors, let's not forget Phil LaMarr. He's a lot more versatile than I think many may give him credit for.

True but most people were very woodden in the 1ACV commentaries. After watching the last of the 4ACV commentaries I went back and listened to the SP3k commentary, and it was pretty funny how uncertain and cautious everybody were at first. Try listen to how they introduce themself in SP3k, almost as if they're afraid to say anything wrong, but in later seasons they just start off with a bang. It's actually quite endearing.

I think that Season 4 is the best for commentaries, mainly because Maurice La Marche is so bloody funny. I mean "you wrote it, you can't unwrite it" I was rolling about laughing.

Maurice is funny, although the "Here's Lrrr who sounds nothing like Morbo" jokes get boring very quickly.

i liked all the commetaries except the very last one which was a bit damp, really. dan castelenetta hardly spoke and they seemed more intrested in watching the show than talking, which they can do any time.

It's strange that you singled out that episode of all of them as the one where "they seemed more interested in watching the show than talking", much less say that Dan Castelanetta hardly spoke. He spoke a fair amount about his influences for the Robot Devil and the Snail, and there was only really one major pause in the commentary. Admittedly, Dan could've actually done the Robot Devil's voice in the commentary for us, but I personally have very few complaints about it.

Its mainly john's voice retelling the anecdote
tha gets me.
But the problem is the puchline to it takes too long you kind of get it before the lines finished.
Rich Moore and Maurice are the best commentators though.
I'd say Season 3 just beats Season 4
I haven't heard season 1 and I borrowed season 2, but I seem to rember It wasn't until season 3 they seem to have been rehearseing the intro's,
so they get it done quicker.

Rich Moore's very funny. I like the way he's always willing to join in with the tomfoolery, such as in the Spanish Fry commentary. "Uh-oh!"

I'll admit that John telling the story was funny, but I would not consider that one anecdote to make an entire season's worth of commentaries better than those of the other boxsets.
