Maybe April, but that's way too far into the first quarter of the year, I'm sayin either the first 3 months (Jan - Mar)

Listen to Futufan.  He's on the inside, and he knows.  Cool thing, less than four months away.  :) Uncool thing, still nearly four months away.

Uh oh ... the approval process on the newly recorded audio bites is taking longer than anticipated -- this could impact the street date. Stay tuned ...

TVShowsOnDVD.com supports the March 9 date, but as far as I know they just read it here.

Does anyone know how the box design will be changed?  The region 1 sets use the slim DVD cases, so the box will be smaller, and it doesn't look like there would be enough room for the three helmet-windows on the outer cover.  Maybe they'll adjust it so Fry and Bender are on the same side, but I still don't know if that would be enough room.

(I asked a similar question here, but no one ever responded.  Sniff....)

Good question ... I was beginning to wonder that myself -- I'll look into it and see what I can find out.

I guess it'll look EXACTLY like the Region 2 verson but it'll be in the formatt of the Region 1 version. Notice how our DVD cases are a lot thinner than the UK ones. Well, basically, it's exactly like Volume 2 but with the Season 3 covers. I think they're only gonna do Leela and Bender on the front box instead of all three of them

You guys are still getting excited about Season 3? What the hell? You can import both 3 and 4 from Europe before Christmas, for only a marginal price increase! We get the nicer, fatter DVD cases too, with the extra designs on the sides  :).

And if you try to say to me "but I don't have a region-free player", then skip it, as there's no such thing. See Grim's Thread Here for more information.

Why wait? Seriously, why?

Yeah, the region 1 dvds are so much cooler anyway. The region 2ers have so thick cases that they look like indiviual dvds, and besides, I want to collect them all and I already have season 1 & 2 on dvd.

Okay, here's the scoop on the box art for Region 1 ...

The DVDs will be in the slim cases (as were the last 2 seasons), which means the art will be adjusted. Leela will be by herself on one large panel, Fry and Bender will be together on the other large panel and the small panels will feature the logo on one side and episode list on the other (as in past seasons). The outer box will NOT have holes for the characters heads -- the heads will be printed on the outer cover.

That's what I thought.  I knew they'd have to put two characters on one side, but it didn't look like they could put two windows on a side.  It sort of ruins the neat layout trick.

I don't care about the episodes, if I wanted to watch them I'd pull them up on my computer. With Futurama DVDs, I'm concerned about the commentaries, the other features, and the box. And not having the additional art you Region 2ers get sucks ass.

I need clarification on an on-topic point, though. Does this mean that there will be no windows on the s3 set at all, or what?

Lots of North American online stores now have the season 3 set available for pre-order.  The best price I've seen, in several places, is $35.  But you might want to wait until it actually comes out, since in the first week the price could be lower at physical stores.  I think Target had season 2, which has the same MSRP as season 3, for $25 when it came out.

That ain't the half of it ... not only will Region 1 have less (or at least altered) box art, the Region 1 versions of the Season 3 and 4 menus will only be available in 4:3 and not widescreen like it's Region 2 counterparts -- so us Region 1 folks will have less art on the menus, too.

Eh...

It's not like the episodes were in widescreen. If that were the case though i'd be ever so pissed. Futurama in widescreen? That would be awsome!

Oh thank God! Those black bars SCARE us poor wide-screen challenged Americans. (Sarcasm off.) I can't wait to see what happens in a few years when 16:9 screens are the norm and  the Soccer Moms start having to deal with side bars on their older full screen disks and TV shows.

Rather than start a "why widescreen is better" rant, I'll just hope the futufan's source's people take a page from "Pixar's Big Book of Fullscreen Presentations" and do some digital repositioning so that no artwork is actually "lost", just moved around a little bit.

The art on the menus won't be repositioned (ala Pixar) ... unfortunately, the budget and time table is much too small/short to do that. Fortunately, though, most of the visual jokes were designed to take place within the 4:3 area anyway (give or take a few). I just take it personal because I was the lead animator and designer on all 4 seasons of the DVD menus (not to mention a huge fan of the show) and I hate to see anything that I (and my team) worked hard on never see the light of day here on my own home turf.

Why is the content of the DVDs messed with when moving from region 2 to region 1?  I know they need to change the warning messages etc., but why the menus and other features if nothing new is being added?  It's already well done for the R2 DVDs, it seems like a waste of money and time to change things around.  This seems especially stupid this time since it results in lost art.

Region 1 is missing artwork, the other regions have the frame problem.  Looks like no one gets a perfect version.
