Good. Then I need some help.   :)

I don't have every episode, every place, and every character memorized, but together we have a wealth of knowledge.

I'm nearing completion of this project. I'm going to try to list from memory the things that I still need to do.

1. The board needs to be completed. I haven't even started work on the board. As I've mentioned before, I'd like the board to have some character to it. I'm not sure exactly what I mean by that, but I want the Futuropoly board to be somewhere between the "plain old Monopoly" board and the Simpsons monopoly board. So here's the help I need. I need lots of brainstorming on ways that I can make this board unique. They can be little things like fonts or symbols, or they could be big things like how to design the center of the board.

2. I need help with the descriptions of properties. You can use the examples from my Futuropoly site. Each property has to have its own description. The properties that I still need help with are:
- Little Neptune
- Past-O-Rama
- Cookieville Orphanarium
- Dinkin' Donuts
- O'Zorgnax's Pub
- Luna Park
- Famous Original Ray's Superior Court
- Applied Cryogenics
- Academy of Inventors
- Alien Overlord and Taylor
- The Hip Joint
- Madison Cube Garden
- Elzar's Fine Cuisine
- Robot Arms Apartments
- Historic (Square Root) 66 Truck Stop
- South Street Space Port
- Malfunctioning Eddie's Car Emporium

I can't remember now if I got a few of those done since I posted that. I'll have to check. In the meantime, you can still post your descriptions.

3. I need pictures for all of the property cards for the transits (railroads). I might end up doing this myself because I'll probably just do some scan art. If you have any ideas, I'll take those.

Okay. I think that's it. I think I've solved the problem with the game pieces. I'm buying a set of popouts that look like this. I'll find a way to get them out to everyone that wants the game. That should cover all the gamepieces, unless you wanted to use Kif, Zapp, Scruffy, etc. Those won't be included and you'll have to find a way to make they yourself.

One more thing, I'm keeping all the images with layers in .psd format (for those of you with Adobe Photoshop) so that any changes that you want can be made for your own version.

If you have no idea what I was talking about, I'll also be making .pdf (Adobe Acrobat) files for those of you that just want to print what I made. I'm not really sure about how I want to distribute this. I guess the easiest way would be to mail them out on cds, but that would require B+P (blanks and postage... you send me a blank cd and a prepaid envelope, I send it back with the game). I have some webspace too, so I guess I could post it there if I have to.

Alright. I think that's it for now. I'll make sure I didn't miss anything as far as tasks required to complete the game.

Thanks in advance for your help!!   :)

Okay, if you don't feel like reading back at all then I'll post the most recent update to my "help needed" report. Also, thanks to whoever posted about the site being down. I forgot to upload the files when I switched hosting companies. That's all fixed now and you can view samples of the project at  http://mellentine.com/futuropoly .

Since the game is nearing completion, I'm thinking about how I want to release the game. I'd like to put it under a Creative Commons license allowing derivative works and usage, but disallowing use for commercial purposes. Here's an example of the license.

I'm open to discussion about this.

I'm thinking the game should be done sometime next month if everything keeps going as it is. If I were to get more help, it could be done sooner. I have someone working on the property descriptions and they're doing an excellent job. Next, I'd like to get scan art for the transits. After that, I can start work on the board. Yeah, so about 2-3 weeks, I'd think.

I was also thinking about maybe writing up some instructions for gameplay. Maybe an adaptation of the original Monopoly instructions. Can someone volunteer to do that while I'm working on other things? I need someone that is good at typing, grammar, and spelling. I can do it, but it might prolong the release of the game. Email me if you're interested. Choose your subject wisely so I don't junk your message.

i would definatley help with that if i had a copy of the original monopoly instructions. however, i dont have a copy here at my house.

great job though! are you planning on actually releasing this and selling it, as a set, or just providing the images for us to print out as we see fit?

a few questions:

  • is the board finished?
  • can we see it?
  • how many of the various cards are done?
  • can we see those?
  • do you have an estimate on when the whole thing will be done?
  • when it is, can you also distribute it as normal images, for those of us without photoshop or any other fancy photo editing programs?
  • or can you print out the whole set at kinkos or something and sell them?

Are people actually allowed to sell this type of thing? If so I'm continuing one I started making before (it's Mitsui by the way, just going for a change).

I thought that I had been clear about my plans for the release of this game. I guess not.

I will not be selling the game, but I will be freely distributing printable images (in .pdf form) and/or source images (in .psd form) to anyone that wants them. Please see my post about licensing if you have any further questions. I do not believe that it is legally feasible to sell this game for profit, so I won't be doing so.

I think most of these questions could have been answered by reading previous posts, but I don't mind answering them again.

No, the board is not finished. That is the last major task of this project.

The delivery/what-if-machine cards  (community chest/chance, respectively) are completely done. The property cards need a few descriptions and 3 scan art images, but are basically done. The gamepiece cards are done. You can see samples of all of these (except for the gamepieces) on the Futuropoly website.

My nearest estimate relies on the assistance needed from other fans. I've posted a few times about which tasks still require help, but I have only received one volunteer (who is busy with other things as well). Assuming I get the help I need, this game could be done in a few weeks. If I don't get the help I need, possibly never.

I will be distributing the game files in PDF format (you can use the free Acrobat Reader from Adobe) on my website for all to download. There will be no cost associated with this. You will be responsible for downloading and printing the game. I am working on a solution for printing the gameboard, which will be 22"x22".

I will also be releasing the source files (.PSDs), and will send them B+P to anyone that requests them.

Okay, PJF. You can name the game whatever you want when it's finished. However, it will be released as Futuropoly ("futur" from Futurama, "opoly" from Monopoly).

Just remember to request the source images when the game is released.

ok, thanks for the update-type-thing, jaredmellentine. i'll email you about the instructions.

what i meant by "can we see the cards" was "can we see ALL of the cards". not just the handful of sample cards on the site.

as for the title, i like Futuropoly better than Futurapoly or whatever. although, left to my decision, i would have called it "Futuramopoly"
hell, anything's better than "Simpsons Monopoly"

and doktor, good job on the board you posted. however, i think the final thing should have more pictures/scans not only for the properties, but also for decoration.

I'm not trying to be harsh or selfish when I post this, so read carefully.

I don't plan on releasing any part of the game until all aspects of the game are complete and it is ready for use. The reason for this is that I want to be able to release an entire package. I don't want to release the cards, then release the gamepieces, then release the money, etc. By releasing the entire game at once, it's something that is able to be used right away, not just a bunch of property cards, gamepieces, etc.

For now, you'll just have to put your imagination to work for you. I've given you sample cards, so you can determine the layout for the rest of them. The content of the cards is either listed on my site or it's easily obtainable (i.e. pricing for properties). I'm not sure what you're trying to gain by getting the cards ahead of time.

WTF?

what about yugioh and pokemon? also, no, they don't rule. it's just a stuipd plot by evil corporations to make our impressionable, young children broke and stupid. think about it: how much money do you spend on a trading card game? when pokemon was popular, i think i spent a few hundred dollars, total. 2 years later, it became unpopular, and i had $300 dolars worth of useless cardboard. trading card games do not rule in any way, shape or form.
