*Does a news announcer TOTP Dance*

Finally there is some news (although it's not much) about the Futurama game including confirmation of which consoles it will appear on and a vauge possible release period. I got the following information from http://www.finky.com  if you don't believe me, here is what it said:

SCi Entertainment has won the game publishing rights to TV series Futurama.

Futurama is the follow-up to The Simpsons, both of which were created by Matt Groening.
The game is to be published on PlayStation 2, Microsoft Xbox and Nintendo GameCube during 2003.

Financial details of the deal have not been disclosed.

SCi has also announced it will be publishing Rally Championship for Nintendo's GameCube.

The release of the game for GameCube is due to take place in the first half of 2003, and the PlayStation 2 version will go on sale earlier in the year.

Personally, I thought the game(s) was good news, but it made most of my friends shudder in dread. Ah well.
I think it's most awful when they make a purely action-oriented game based on something nice. Of course games based on tv/movies/everything else have a really horrible reputation, but with something like Futurama the genre means a lot... wouldn't we all rather interact with NNYC than just blow stuff up and hear occasional disjointed one-liners?
Of course, I'm sure I'll get it/them whether or not it's any good. The difference is I don't think I'll have the cajones to face a store employee over a desk and ask for it if it's widely known to suck, so I'll have to wait till it's used at that place that has the used games and stuff... So UDS just better do a good job if they want my payoff!

I'll get it when it comes out for Gamecube, for those of you who may not know the storyline is written by one of the actual script writers for Futurama which makes me optimistic and hopeful.

I had an interview with the producer of the Futurama video game from UDS, basically, all your questions have been answered!  :)  So now I just need to post it at cgef, once the site comes back up.

Cool! Being that one of the writers will be working for the game, I hope the theme of the game will be like a plot meant for an extra-long episode.

Well, he held it for cgef so it's going both ways I guess    ;)

It's pretty easy to get people in the industry to do stuff for you when you tell them it's for the biggest Futurama site. Like our Jonny gets merchandise for free for reviewing them (which he didn't do yet     )

PS: CGEF is up

There will be a Futurama videogame JoJo.  IN 2003 it will be released.  Here a random press release.

SCi Entertainment Group (SEG), today announces the signing of the game publishing rights to Futurama, the highly successful Twentieth Century Fox TV series.

Futurama is the follow up to The Simpsons, both of which were created by Matt Groening, the multi-Emmy award winning writer and designer. The game is to be published on PlayStation 2, Microsoft Xbox and Nintendo Game Cube during SCi’s 2003 Financial Year. SCi has signed the worldwide rights to the game outside North America. Fox Interactive will publish the game in North American markets.

Futurama was launched in March 1999, and since then has been televised throughout the world. The show is currently in its fourth season, with international TV broadcasting commitments currently extending beyond 2003 in most territories, and into 2008 in certain territories.

The game is being developed by Swedish-based developer, UDS, whose last title, “World’s Scariest Police Chases”, was released to critical acclaim and excellent sales at the end of 2001. Futurama is a 3D action adventure set in the stunning sci-fi universe of the TV series. The player can take on the role of the three main characters, Fry, Bender and Leila, as their adventure takes them from Planet Express right around the galaxy.

The game, which is well into development, features a strong storyline written by the TV show’s scriptwriter and producer, J. Stewart Burns. Matt Groening has been heavily involved with the game from its conception. The game will feature most of the original voice artists from all the major territories. It features a custom-made cartoon rendering engine that captures the visual look and feel of the Futurama TV series. This, combined with the authenticity that the show's creator, writers and voice talent bring, means that the game will be as close as possible to playing real episodes from the show.

Jane Cavanagh, Chief Executive of SCi commented:

“We are delighted to sign such an exciting mass market licence. Following the outstanding success of The Italian Job, this is a clear demonstration that global companies such as Fox have faith in the quality of SCi products. Added to existing titles such as The Great Escape and the next generation of the Rally Championship, Futurama provides SCi with a very strong line up for the 2003 Financial Year.”

Wow that game sounds great! even better than I had imagined, I like the idea of playing as Fry, Bender or Leela and it's great that they are trying to keep it as closely related to the TV show as possible. I would like to see some screen shots and I would imagine that we may see some by August this year, especially as the game is supposed to be well underway, I can't wait! Thanx for the info The Baz.

That sounds great. I'd buy that game. Playing as the main characters would be cool, sounds like "DS9:The Fallen". But it's only for gaming consoles, not for PC? What the h***.

[Norrköping, Sweden, February 21, 2002.] The Scandinavian-based game developer UDS has signed an international distribution agreement with the British games publisher SCi, according to which SCi will market and distribute a “Futurama” game in all parts of the world excluding North America.

The Futurama game is based on Fox’s popular animated TV series "Futurama" by Matt Groening, the creator of "The Simpsons", and David Cohen. "Futurama" is one of the world's most popular animated TV series with millions of fans in all major TV markets. UDS is developing ”Futurama” under a publishing arrangement with Fox. The game will be available for Sony PlayStation 2, Microsoft X-box and Nintendo GameCube and is expected to hit the retail market by Christmas this year.

CGEF has a great section that me and sachit made, check it out here

And for those who are too lasy to click that link...

Release date: X-Mas
Developer: UDS
Publisher: Fox Interactive (US). SCi (World Wide)
Platforms: PS2, X-Box, GameCube. Will NOT be released on handheld or PC systems.
Genre: Action / Adventure
Playable characters: Fry, Bender, Leela and Dr. Zoidberg.
Players: 1
Online features: none
Price: $49.99 US

And here is a very cool interview I had with the games producer:

<Jon> First off, thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for CGEF!
<Anders> It beats typing up the minutes from my last meeting, which I'm actually supposed to do right now.

Question: Which gaming consoles are you planning on releasing
Futurama video game titles for? I heard there’ll be a PS2/X-Box and a GameBoy Advance game, is this true? And will there be any titles for the PC or GameCube?
Answer: The game will be for PS2, X-Box and Gamecube.

Q: I’ve heard that the PS2 game is going to be first person
action adventure. Does this mean it will be like Banjo Kazooie or Tomb Raider, or more like a first person shooter such as Perfect Dark or Red Faction?
A: The game is so unique in its gameplay that I wouldn't want to label it under any commonly know label, although I guess you could call it a third person action adventure.

Q: Will players be able to choose from our favorite characters
like Leela, Fry, Bender, and Zoidberg?
A: Of, course! Throughout the game, you will be able to play as Fry, Bender, Leela and Dr. Z. Each of which will have their own unique abilities,
strengths and weaknesses.

Q: What will the main plots of these games be? Can you give us
hints regarding the stories?
A: I could say that the story involves Mom, her three sons and time travel, but it would all be rumours and hearsay.

Q: Do you plan on making cut scenes for the games? If so, will
they be animated in the way they are produced for television, or will they be 3D animated? For example, the cut scenes in ‘Simpsons road rage’ were 3D instead of 2D.
A: The cut-scenes will be in 3D in order to fit together with the game.

Q: Will you be taking advantage of online Multiplayer features in
the PS2, X-Box, or the PC?
A: Futurama will be single player only.

Q: Do you have any release dates set yet?

A: Yes, the game will be out for Xmas 2002.

Q: Are there any video clips or pictures of the game you can
provide yet?
A: We haven't released any material publicly at this point no, although we will do so very soon.

Q: Are you planning on releasing any public demo’s or Bata tests
of the game? Or is there anyway I could get my hands on a copy? ;-)
A: Public demos possibly in the future but not at the moment. Beta test versions of the game, no. Our in-house QA department will take care of all
the testing.

Q: Sadly, Futurama has been cancelled. Will this affect the
games at all?
A: No, not in the slightest!

Q: Just recently there was a press release at UDS’s website
stating that the Futurama video will NOT be released in North America, what exactly does this mean? That I will have to buy an imported version of the Futurama video game to play it at all?
A: The Futurama video game will be released in North America by Fox Interactive.

Q: There were rumors that there is going to be a GameBoy
Advanced Futurama video game, is this true? And if so, what will the title be?
A: This is not true. There will be no GBA version of the game.

Q: Also, do you know what the title of the PS2/X-box/ GameCube Futurama video game will be yet?
A: There is no official title for the game at this point.

also, expect an update on my site today

In a new Gamecube magazine it lists some of the future games. The good news is that the Futurama game is mentioned, the bad news is that has a 2003 release date :hmpf:

Descriptions say it will resemble an actual episode, all the way down to the "animated" appearance of characters. That's justice enough for me. And I'll be able to play as Zoiby! THAT'S MORE LIKE IT!! WHO'S AFRAID OF WHO NOW, BIG CITY?

I can't beleive that there's still no more news on the game  :( I thought that we'd at least get to see some screen shots by now, but not even one has been seen. Normally for most games screen shots are released over a year in advance, which means things aren't looking very bright at the moment  :(
