Most of my DVDs (Region 2) are also Region 4. Is that a common thing or just coincidence that many of mine are?

I wouldn't call it common but some companies (BBC and Universal are the ones that come to mind) do release R2/4 disks

Thanks for the info. New commentaries? Great news, then I'm definately having it shipped over from the US or Canada to here in Europe.

God bless my good ol' multi-region player!

Amazon.com have it up for preorder here.

No info at all yet on details, though.

First details.  Commentary on "Hell is other Robots" animatic and introductions from Groening, Cohen, and others.

From the Animation Insider article (emphasis mine):
Quote
Billy West (as himself, "Kip," "Professor," and others)
Is it just me, or is that wrong in two ways?

Also, might the "special commentary" on the animatic be one of the illustrated commentary of the type seen on the later Simpsons DVD releases?  That would be cool.

You can add Paramount / Viacom to that list too. In general unless companies see fit to restrict their releases the regions go by video format. Europe and Australia (Regions 2 and 4) are both PAL format. However Region 1 is NTSC, so you are unlikely to get a Region 1 /2 or 1/4 region disc.

I have noticed that WB are very scrict on region coding. Region 4 is always only region 4

What's an illustrated commentary?

-Assuming this source is correct about the special commentary for "Hell Is Other Robots", does that mean there will be 5 total commentaries?

Unsure about the second question (neither article I saw on this was clear on it).

The Illustrated Commentary idea is something where the directors/animators not only talk over the animatic, but actually draw on screen to help show the animation process (or just doodle and joke around, take your pick).  It may be on some dvds I don't know of but the only examples I've seen of it are the seasons four and five Simpsons dvds.  I don't know if that would be on this or not but its always possible Groening liked the idea from the Simpsons ones and would like to do the same thing here.  But I wouldn't bank on it since we don't know either way.

Wow, that Illustrated Commentary sounds quite cool. Wonder how many ways there are to subtly write "FOX Sucks!" on a screen...

Well, on the Simpsons one they actually do berate Fox a little, and draw the "Fox" logo/"bug" on the screen as a joke.

when i look on the webpages advertising this, i only see one commentary, yet people here are saying there are five (one for three of them, two for one).

Which is it?

Well, futufan (super kung-fu DVD insider) says there may be one for each episode, and then there is the one animatic commentary that has been reported elsewhere, which would make up the five.  I would think that we won't know for sure until closer to the release, but I don't think futufan has been wrong yet.

Unrelated to the rest of my post, but related to the topic: Amazon.ca has it up for twelve bucks Canadian... not bad.

Hell, even if there is no animatic commentary, I'll still be picking up this DVD. But I'm gonna be short on cash. (Gotta shell out $30 to go to Magic Mountain for Physics Day, $20 for the 'Futurama' DVD, and $50 for season 4 of 'King Of the Hill'.)

There should be at least four commentaries. (Didn't the Simpsons and Family Guy special DVDs have new commentaries?)

Yea, 100th post in this thread.

Family Guy did.  Not sure what you're talking about with Simpsons, though one recent Christmas release did have an extra animatic (without a commentary).  But the Family Guy one is a closer comparison anyway, since its a presentation of McFarlane's favorite episodes, as this is Groening and Cohen's favorites.

^I was at Wal-Mart, and they had a Simpsons DVD with Homer on the front at a wild party, and the title went something like this: "The Simpsons Wild, Crazy, Parties." (Anyone know what I'm talking about? The only other thing I can remember is that Homer has a lampshade over his head, and he's wearing a pink bra.)

I think there are a bunch of single-disk themed simpsons releases (not many in R1, but a lot in R2, I think) that have four or so episodes and minimal special features, you just saw one of them.

Anyhow, I think this release would be a closer comparison to the FG release than any of the Simpsons discs, as DTB said.

I'd agree, we in the UK have a lot of the themed 4-ep Simpsons DVDs (and videos) which have almost no special features. This Futurama disc looks to be something special  :)

It's just the now ancient Bart Wars themed VHS, but on DVD. It has 4 episodes, dunno which ones but a quick search should tell you.

All right!
I'll definately pick it up, and maybe get a few extra copies as presents.

By the way, "Hell is other robots" makes a perfect intro for anyone that thinks the show isn't cool, try it at college/uni, if there's a spare communial tv around.

That is total bullshit! Why do other regions get it first anyway? Isn't the majority of fans located in the United States?
And what would the big deal be if something was released in Region 1 first, then the other regions? They would get the same product, only later.
Oh well. The main thing is that a new Futurama DVD is going to be released. (And you only said may, so there's still that chance it could go Region 1 first.

I wish I could understand this Region thing. As I said before: "Why do other regions get it first anyway? Isn't the majority of fans located in the United States?
And what would the big deal be if something was released in Region 1 first, then the other regions? They would get the same product, only later."

Oh yeah, if Region 2 gets it first around May 2005, about when will it get to good ol' Region 1?

Because a ton of cool DVDs (including all the Futurama DVD's I believe) have been released in Region 2 first. I'd just like a change. But I do acknowledge that Region 1 people would also eventually get it.

Seems it won't be coming out in may, though no new date is given.  I'm not worried though; it might just be that May is currently packed release-wise, and they want to give it a different month when there won't be as much competition.
