That's right ... Fox is planning on releasing a single disc DVD that will contain 4 episodes of Matt Groening's personal picking (1 episode from each season). This will be like the Family Guy's Freakin' Sweet Collection that came out a while back. No word yet on if there will be any new special features included on the disc. No word yet on a release date.

More info to come ...

Thanks a lot futufan! Hopefully some of those extras ideas you asked us for a while back will turn up on the disc  :) I won't buy it if it's just the eps...but if there's ANYTHING new on the disc I suspect I'll have to buy it :P

That's awesome!  I'll definately have to keep some cash handy.  I'm also thinking about getting the Family Guy seasons, but am unsure ATM if I should do so.

Although this release won't benefit many of us here (because we all own the seasons anyway), I think this is a good idea for those casual fans out there. I guess if it had new extras it would benefit us, but they'd have to be decent...

I'm most interested in the artwork myself. I'm hoping it'll have new artwork, I'll take any new Futurama art I can get...

As for which episodes it'll contain, it's anybody’s guess (accept Matt’s). But seeing as it's one from every season, here's not what I think will be on it, but what I'd personally put on it myself if I was choosing:

‘Fry & The Slurm Factory’
‘A Head in the Polls’
‘Parasites Lost’
‘The Sting’

Thanx futufan for letting us know   :)...

The family guy version didn't have anything extra other than a few seconds of Bin Laden that was cut from the earlier release.
But thats OK. Futurama discs always have more stuff on them, so I'm hopeful that there will be some juicy extras bolted on, or at least an easter egg.

My list:
'Hell is other robots'
'Why must I be a crustacean in love?'
'Parasites lost'
'The devils hands are idle playthings'

Wooo! It aint totally dead yet!

I wonder if this is somehow similar to that failed Adult Swim thing...

Can't wait for it.

My List:
Season 1: Hell is Other Robots
Season 2: A Head in the Polls
Season 3: Roswell that Ends Well
Season 4: Why of Fry

Second.
I too hope it has some extra stuff, like new commentaries for each episode. Thank you for the info futufan, you've made me a very happy girl   :D

If I chose, it'd be...
"Anthology of Interest I"
"The Farnsworth Parabox"
"Godfellas"
"A Head In The Polls"
Well, at least FOX is still aware of Futurama's existance. Should be an interesting item. I'll only buy it if there's some interesting new bonus material.

Shadowstar - the list is one from each season. You had two Season 2 episodes and no Season 1 episodes.

Anyway, my list would be:
SEASON 1: A Flight To Remember
SEASON 2: War Is The H-Word
SEASON 3: Roswell That Ends Well (I'm betting this will definitely be on there, since it won an emmy & all)
SEASON 4: The Sting

I might look into buying this, providing I can get it at a decent price & it has some good extras.

First off, I want to thank Futufan not only for all his info, but also for those rockin' menus.  ;)   Seriously, these box sets have been incredible, and I'm not afraid to say that they should be the standard for all animated show dvds to aspire to.  I say that not only as a biased Futurama fan but moreso as a general dvd buyer.

In any case, I might buy this.  Depends on the price, what extra features are involved, etc.  It would be a nice way of supporting the show too, and either way I'll be curious about Groening's favorite episodes.

Zmithy: There's actually a potential for them to pull a "Family Guy" here if you think about it.  If they decide to put "Space Pilot 3000" on this they could theoretically put in the original with the "JFK Jr. Airport" line.

My potential picks:

S1: A Big Piece of Garbage (unless they want to include the unedited SP3000, which would be preferable)
S2: A Head in the Polls
S3: Luck of the Fryrish (but damn what a season)
S4: Jurassic Bark

Where did you hear this? I'd like some official info. (I don't want to be disappointed by possible false information.)

Even if it had deleted scenes, animatics, scripts, table reads, or anything else, I still wouldn't buy it. (Not worth it.)
But if it had any new commentary (preferably a character commentary or one with Katey Sagal [or both]), I'd definetely get it.

Maybe it's a sign of interest for 'Futurama' by FOX. (More likely not. I'd rather be negative about everything, until I heard an official word.)

My Episodes:

-When Aliens Attack
-War Is The H-Word
-Roswell That Ends Well
-The Devil's Hands Are Idle Playthings

^I'd pick "The Sting", but Groening will probably pick this, since it was the last episode.

Don't worry. It's true. Futufan works at... somewhere and does... something. I don't really know what he does, but I do know that he is involved with the futurama dvd's. So don't worry.

My List:

S1:A Big Piece of Garbage

S2:Xmas Story

S3:Parasites Lost

S4: Jurrasic Bark

Cool news. If it's priced similarly to the Family Guy collection relative to the season sets (that would put it in the ~15 range, in store), I'll likely pick it up. Assuming, of course, that it has something more than just four vanilla episodes. Animatics would be nice, table reads would be better, both would be superb. Little intro videos from Matt on the episodes, perhaps?  Hopefully some stuff suggested by us in that thread a while back will make it to the disk.

edit: It would be interesting if the episodes followed the whole nibbler/fry story that was there from the beginning, but I doubt that would happen.  I don't think there is anything from Season 3, and there would be 2 from 4 (and 1, if you included LLLiS).  Just a thought.

Season three had "The Day the Earth Stood Stupid" (a possible candidate in fact(?) since Groening loves the Hypno Toad).  Season two doesn't really have anything but I guess they could include "Anthology of Interest" for the minor "hint".

It also has new commentary.

I thought Fox only did the new Family Guy DVD to promote the new season and American Dad. But maybe it sold well enough that they decided a new Futurama DVD would do well too.

I know it's been asked before, but when will it be released in the U.S.?

(I'm now hopeful. But I'm still very doubtful. No offense against you futufan, but I simply don't want my hopes dashed again, after they have been dashed before.)

Who is going to buy this DVD when most fans already own all 4 seasons on DVD?

The only thing new this DVD has to offer is 4 new commentaries and theres already enough commentaries to go through on the Season 1 - 4 sets.

$40 just to listen to a few new commentaries??

This new DVD should be a very good way of introducing friends to the series without having to splash out on a whole season of a show they might not love. 4 great episodes sounds like a good candidate for birthday/Xmas gifts to me!

Ah, I knew I forgot one (I just skimmed the episode list).  A fairly major one at that.  And yes, I was counting AOI2, as well as Jurassic Bark (I think they both add to the strength of the story in their respective scenes).

DTBm, the "JFK Jr. Airport" line was in the animatic of SP3K inlcuded in the 1st Futurama DVD Box Set, thus I can't see it being nessesary to this single disc release. Anyway, I'd like to see deep documentaries on how Matt, David and the others created the characters. I'd really like to how (and when) they came up with the original concepts, personalities and backstories of Fry, Leela, Bender, Amy, Kif, Zoidy, the Proefessy, Hermes, Zapp, Mom, Walt, Larry, Ignar, Morbo and the rest, instead of just saying "Leela's the typical sci-fi babe that drives horny animators crazy, but only has 1 one" or "Fry's like me when I was in my mid20's" or "Bender's not like Robby the Robot from 'Forbidden Planet'". I'd also REALLY, REALLY, REALLY like to make commentaries by Katey and Lauren in which they tell how they got the roles of Leela and Amy, what working on the show was like, what they think of Matt, David, the writers, producers, character designer, storyboard and layout people, in-betweeners and claenup artists, and fellow voice actors like Billy, John, Moe, Dave, Tress and Kath, what they think of their characters, their most and least favorite characters, episodes and plot points, how they look back on the show, etc.

I know the line's in the animatic.  It would just be nice to have a version of it in the actual episode, for completion reasons.

That's an interesting idea though, having the people from the show talk about favorite episodes and so forth....I'd be curious to hear from a bunch of writers, animators, actors, etc about their favorite episodes and moments and so forth (which would be a natural fit given the theme of it being Matt's own favorite episodes).  For that matter it might be nice to see bits of footage of the voice actors doing the voices, since I don't think we've really seen that anywhere else so far.

Speaking of Futurama DVDs, here in Australia each disc from the box sets are now being sold separately for $14.99, I guess this would help to entice casual fans that wont necessarily want every episode

these single disc dvd's have been rumored before season 1 was even announced on DVD.  The fact that family guy got their own set would imply that this may actually happen, but back in the days I would have thought the simpsons having their own single disk sets would imply futuramas also.

that aside, futufan is a very very reliable source, so this sounds cool at least.  I can't imagine there not being some really nice extra never before seen features on the disk, so hurrah for that.  will I buy it? probably not. maybe once it goes on sale for like 6.99.

Okay, it's official ... here are the four hand picked episodes by MG and DXC that will be on this disc:

From Season 1: Hell is Other Robots
From Season 2: Anthology of Interest I
From Season 3: Roswell That Ends Well
From Season 4: The Sting

Unfortunately, so far it sounds like the only extra feature is a new introduction from MG (but it's still early in the game so that could change). Oh, and the name of the disc will be something like "The Maniac Monster Robot Collection".  I'll let you guys know if I hear anthing else.

Thanks, dude! I really appreciate the compliments -- we DVD designers/animators rarely get credit for anything we do so it's incredibly nice to hear that someone out there appreciates the hard (well, it ain't ditch diggin', but you get the idea) work we put into these things. Futurama was a dream project for me, being a fan of the show to begin with, and it's great to hear fellow Futurama fans enjoyed what myself and a couple other very talented folks were able to create with limited budgets and time schedules. Viva la Futurama!

Can't say I'm really surprised about the episode selection - they're all generally regarded as the best as their season anyway. A little surprised by Season 1's episode (not that it's bad or anything, I just thought they'd have gone for one of the episodes that affected the series a lot, eg. Space Pilot 3000, Love's Labour's Lost In Space).

If any more extras come up (new audio commentaries would be brilliant), I'll really consider getting it. Gots to support the show we all love!   :)

If the only new feature is Matt Groening's introduction, then I won't be picking it up. (Like anyone cares.) Hell, if there is only one new, full-length audio commentary, then I'll pick it up. (As long as it isn't over $22.)
This doesn't really need to be in italics, but I was bored. Why hasn't www.gotfuturama.com  , said anything about this yet? If they're waiting for an official word, then I'd understand. But if anyone knows the answers, I'd appreciate it.

1. I'm lazy. 2. I didn't wanna jump the gun. 3. I figured if I waited a couple of days, something more official may pop up, and it did.

So I'll update CGEF about it soon.  Thing is, the disk(s) so far sound boring.  I really hope they kick it up a notch and add something worthwhile to it.

Thanks a futufan, and since it seems you don't get much praise I'll just say that the DVDs got better with every season art-wise. Wonder what you could have done with a 5th Season!

Really hope they stick some more extras on this disc. A new commentary for each episode would definetely make me buy this disc, as long as DXC had some wacky stories I'd buy it!
