With an eye to the first thread's closing. I decided to beat the rush and create the new thread. Review the latest fics or give a review of an earlier work. Constructive criticism is always appreciated and I'm sure that any author would agree with me.

Now go forth and review! (Please keep fic release notices in the proper thread, thank you)

This is cool, it was one year ago today, that I released my very first fanfic, "Less Than Hero 2: Enter the Gulk" and the rest is history.

The Gulk was an attempt to make fun of last years film, The Hulk and give Amy a much bigger role.   Kryten himself gave me a thumbs up for a first try at a fanfic and since then, I done some pretty good and funny fanfics.  Fry Another Day was the very first fanfic idea I came up with, but it took a long time to finish and write the way that I wanted.  I still have trouble with proofreading, but I'm working on it.

I look at myself as one of the most underrated fanfic writers.  In that I'm good, but not as good as other fanfic writers such as Allen, Kryten or Officer 1BDI.  Though writers such as Officer 1BDI say my stories read like actual episodes.  I try to stay true to the show when I write a fanfic.  I support any writer who tries to do something that the show would never do.  Some of my favorite fanfics are like that.

I want to show a little love for The Chronitons of Fry-nia. It's one of the few non-JBERGES fanfics (but I've reviewed him enough, dammit) I really liked, as opposed to the MST3K treatment I end up giving most of them.

Whoa.... Worst. Review. Ever. Yet here I go pressing submit! I'm a maniac!

I'm wondering, how was my fanfic, "I Dream of Amy"?  Many fans have requested more Fry/Amy fanfics.

Officer 1BDI had this to say:

Quote
Of all the "Leela finds out that Fry got rid of the worms for her" plots out there, this is certainly the most original. I didn't see it coming, but it worked out surprising well. Kudos.

Allen, you are a good critic, what did you think? Besides the proofreading, which I am working on.

You mean on the boards, or just fics in general? There are some really good ones at TLZ, some shippy, some not.

Well, I reread that particular fic. You really do need to work on proofreading. wink

So to sum it up, you wrote an okay story. 1BDI is right. The plot twist was unexpected and original. but I do feel it cheapened the story.

To Allen:  You are the Roger Ebert of fanfics, and I mean that in a good way. I like how Roger Ebert just says his opinion straight forward, just like you.        wink

About what you said, kif's sudden anger comes from my idea that Kif is just bottling up what he wants to do.  Zapp's abuse, I feel, is the cause of bottling up his emotions.

Remember in WITHW, he yelled at Fry, when Zapp made Fry, Kif's assistant.  I based Kif's reaction from that.  It is the first time someone has talked about sleeping with Amy.  And after all, characters change now and then.  Amy changed to having a serious relationship, from just going out wuth guys to get coffeee.  the same could be said for Kif.

Also, I do normally mention when a story take place.  I mention at the end that this story took place after "The Stepford Leela" and before "PE Angels".  Why mention at the end? because PE Angels has Fry and Leela together and thus ruins the element of suspense of Fry and Leela getting back together.

Though I do like you honesty.  Could you review some of my other stories, when you have the time?

The Stepford Leela
JX: Rise of the Jinx Revolution, Part 3  (You reviewed only part 1 and 2, but never part 3.)

and I also would like your thoughts on the SpyOrama series.  I've recently done SpyOrama 8, and I think I really improved on the proofreading.  I took the time really reading the story and corrected as best I could, the errors I made.

I could picture your review saying something like:

You know how you normally review something.  I'd really like that, thank you.

In general. I've read a handful at TLZ and have been generally unimpressed. Maybe I'm unlucky and end up mostly picking the weak ones. Does anyone have any recommendations? Maybe in review form, so this doesn't get any more offtopic.

Yeah, I'll rec my favorites:

-ANYTHING by Kryten, although my favortite is "The Frychurian Candidate"
-"Delicious Surprise" by Missy, a love story with PLOT
-"Crash Course in Love"
-(while I have never read this, people like) "Universe of Malice" by Kenneth White
-"Last Shot" and "First Time" by Mysteryman
-"The Longest Journey Home" by Farnsworth38, which we're still waiting for HIM TO FINISH
-"Backround Noise" by Dave Vincent..I loved this even before he gave me a cameo in an upcoming chapter  smile

Finally, there is new part of "The Other"- Skyler related bussines was maybe just a filler but it is probably going to have bigger impact in the next part. It is also first part when author correctly spelling Leela´s surname (nothing in bad), when we are talking about Leela, there is beutiful written part with her parents, altough I´am not sure if history of her mother is beliveable in the context of real series, still, nicely done.

Maybe it's the time away from the fic, but this part seems to have taken a nosedive from the rest of the fic quality wise. At the most, this part acted like a filler. Don't get me wrong, fillers have their place, but I like when something gets done. We did have some character development that takes away some of the filler feeling, but as Rhodan said it's difficult to believe. Some people have a hard time accepting the show's explanation of Leela's heritage  and feel the need to explain it away somehow. I can't tell if that's the case here, but it still doesn't sit right. I could care less about her heritage, it didn't really have anything to do with who Leela is as a person. I'll just leave that here as we could argue that all day long.

It's still a good read after nothing for two months though wink

From TLZ alone (and in no particular order):

-"A Helping Hand": One of my favorite fics out there, shipper or otherwise. This is one of the few shipper fics that is actually funny, and the plot ain't half bad either.

-"The Other": It's not as good as others (no pun intended...man, I suck), but it accomplishes its job. Don't get me wrong, the last few parts have been very nice, but it got off to a rocky start (I'll just say that Rye Guy characterizes Leela as being more open and interested in Fry than she is in the series itself. I realize that it was integral to the plot early on (and that's the only place where it's a big issue) but I just have a thing with Leela being characterized in that light). Other than that one beef, it's a nicely done series.

-"A Long Night" and "An Even Longer Day": A two-parter by Rye Guy, it's very enjoyable, with the exception of Leela's characterization.

-Like Shauker said, anything by Kryten is gold (please don't make me pick my favorite...)

-"Crash Course in Love": I believe that this is the first fic that I ever read. While I tend to stay away from dramatic fics (don't ask me why I'm a shipper), this is one of the few that holds my interest throughout. I highly reccommend it.

-"Precious Memories": Another nice one, and thankfully a lot shorter than CCIL (not to say that length was ever a problem, but this is definitely an easier read).

-"No More Secrets": I read this one right after CCIL, and I must say that it remains a favorite. While the constant allusions to earlier episodes tend to get frustrating, the premise itself more than makes up for it.

-"Universe of Malice": Have yet to read it, but like Shauker said, it's been read by many people, with positive reviews.

Oh yeah, and:

Yeah, Gorky and Shaucker are right. Though I don't like parts 10-20 of "Delicious Surprise". These are too dark and gruesome for me. I didn't enjoy reading them. The same goes for parts 6+ of "The Other".

I would also like to add "A Second Chance". Characterization may not be perfect, but I liked the story a lot.

And I generally like anything from BumbleBeeTheta, although her fics tend to be a little more distant from the original Futurama theme.

My all-time favourites are "Last Shot" (+"First Time" ), "Crash Course in Love", "No More Secrets" and "Leela's Return".

Man, I almost forgot "Leela's Return"!

Kryten's stuff's good, you say? Maybe I should try it out finally.

Excuse me Fryfan, but I see no point to your last posts. People who want to see those reviews can go to FF.net (regardless of the problems some writers are now having with it. While this is the review thread, your above post is similiar to movie previews. Where they use the reviews you could look up if you wanted. The place to pimp YOUR story is in the Fanfic Release Thread. This is for pimping other people's stories big grin I'll be back with a review for the lastest chapter of Background Noise. I'd do it now, but haven't finished reading it.

Yeah well you saw what they did to my previous story, "You Should Have Snoo-Snoo Only Once".  They removed it and the reviews and I had two good reviews for that story.  I don't want to take any chances.  If ff.net removes "From SCAM With Hate", at least people's opinions about them will still be available to be read.  These are still reviews by fanfic writers and this is a thread for fanfic reviews, though I saw no harm.

Though, I don't agree with you using the term "pimp", I must admit, I find it funny.  And "movie previews", aren't most reviews like that.  Why I must've read many fanfics after reading some reviews on this thread and the old review thread.

Please, stop saying that, Fryfan.  You can't imagine how arrogant it makes you sound.  Posting reviews of your own work in the review thread adds to that.  Trust me, we all 'notice' your fanfiction, because you do 'pimp' it a lot.  Granted, you are a good writer, but while clamoring for attention may make someone more popular, it comes at a costly loss of dignity, at least in my opinion.

Now, as not to stay off topic:

Part 9 of Background Noise was great.  The main problem I initially had was remembering what had happened previously.  Soon, though, it all came flowing back to me.  I still love the intricate and intriguing plot, and am constantly amused as familiar PEELer names cameo as character names.  Battle scenes are written with an expertise that brings the reader into Fry’s mind, and the oddities of the love/hate Leela/Amy friendship on the show are brought forth skillfully as the two deal with a difficult situation together.  While the Nibblonian discussions tend to drag on a bit for my tastes, especially the flashbacks, I know they are a needed part of the storyline, and I’m sure others appreciate the emotional dialogue even if I can’t.  That’s about all I can say, other than I can’t wait to see what’s next, and what’s going on with Zoidberg anyway?

Wait, seriously does that really make me sound arrogant?  I thought I was just stating the obvious, just like Fry.  I mean, I did say allen, kryten, and officer 1bdi were better writers than me and I hope someday I get the same respect as them.  Don't get me wrong, I'm a real humble person.  Do you really have to use the word "pimp"?  You can't say "promote" or "inform".  "Pimp" just makes it sound, dirty.  Not that I have a problem with pimping, but that term sort of feels strong, in my opinion.

Off topic:  One fanfic you must read was one that allen did that satirized the classic detective movies.  Though, I don't think allen's ever released it on a site, he let me read part of it while he was telling me the proper way to satirize something.  I've asked him when does he plan to share it with the rest of the world, though I think he's too busy with the Frylight Zone to finish it.  From what I remember Fry and Amy spend time together in trying to solve a case, and Leela is also involved with this case.

Also another fanfic writer to look out for is JWMP.  JWMP has managed to do some very funny and good fanfics at ff.net.

I guess it is because, I want to know if I'm good at all.  Most of the reviews I normally get are, "good story" or "LOL" or something and I feel that is too vague.  I want to know why is it good.  What did I do right and what did I do wrong?  The reviews I normally get are vague..

The way Allen reviews, is what I'm looking for.  It tells me on whether I should continue doing fanfics.  I don't mind if someone says, "your fanfic sucks" as a review for one of my stories.  I just merely ask why does it suck, so I can make it better next time.

what review sounds more helpful?

"Your fanfic sucks."

or

"Your fanfic sucks because..."

Ex: Allen reviewed one story of my stories and clearly said he was disappointed and broke the story down to why it was disappointing.  It showed me what to do next time in order to try and make it better.

I think you need to realise there's a difference between promoting your work and shoving it down people's throats. It comes off as a little egotistical and people are probably more likely going to be turned away from it if it keeps getting shoved in their faces all the time. You can't force people to review your work and you can't force them to like it either, the best you can do is write it, subtlely promote it now and then and just let the others do the rest.

One question though: why are you writing fan fiction? Are you writing it because you like it, or are you writing is because you want to be praised for something?

2 Kif White:  I'm writing fanfics for myself, really.  I want to see how good my imagination is and try to continue the adventures of Futurama.  I also want to know if I'm any good and whether I'm either wasting my time or not.  I'm hoping to be as good as the writers I've mention.  I read their stories last year and influenced me to write fanfics for the fun of it.  As far is being praised for it, I just want to know if my fanfics are good and how are they good.  I'm not setting out to be the best fanfic writer, because nobody can be the best fanfic writer because people are always writing good fanfics.  So, I'm just trying not to be lost in the crowd and know that my stories do reach people and they like them just like how I like fanfics that inspired me to do fanfics.

And to prove I'm not egotistical, I want to thank all the people who took the time to read and review my fanfics.  If it wasn't for the fans who read fanfics, this thread wouldn't even exist.

read chap 4 of Spacedal11's Jynx. Liked it, but i got to nitpick the cliffhanger.

@Spacedal11

And you also need to pay attention to some of your sentences there were a few parts where you got redundent. Like: 'She ran up the wall and began to climb up the wall.' You only need half of that line. It doesn't even matter which half. As a general rule try not to use a word twice in one sentance (unless it's a word like the, a, he, she) otherwise it sounds stilted and clunky.

Are we gonna see Leela's parents at all? I love hearing from them.

Thank you Venus for the comments. A little critisiem never hurt anyone. But you know I'm the kinda of writer who just writes, not correctly but I do. (See how I spell critisiem). I mean cut me a little slack I'm only 11. What the hell do I know about "proper grammer" and what not. And I'll put Morris and Munda in the next one. Wow, this really fell to the bottom of the pile.

This review is for the latest part of "A Past With No Future," Kif White has painted a fantastic read just as engaging as "Universe of Malice"

It's a little hard to adjust to the fact that someone abhors Fry so much. Given the circumstances, I can understand...and relate, but the readers are used to and know Fry's character. It's hard to see him through Athena's eyes. We see a good man where she sees a coldhearted man.

Fry, being the person he is will most likely try to fill the role of father, even at this late stage. White poses the question of "Can this be done or is it too late?" Speaking personally, if she is this angry at him. there is a chance. I stopped caring about Dad a long time ago. I don't get angry anymore because I just don't care. Athena still cares. She still wants a father and I hope Fry will try his best.

I can't wait for the next part Kif. Upcoming review for the latest part of The Other

I also want to take this time to implore people to review fanfics. ANY fanfic, new or old. The authors, if they visit here, can benefit from constructive criticism. Fics, good fics are exteremly difficult to produce and feedback makes the effort seem wortwhile.

And it's true... it really helps an author to comment on things, even if only to let them know they're work is being read and appreciated, and to make sure they keep on going. I don't think I would have finished UoM without the continued support here at the time, and I'm sure other authors could use the support more than I.

So we have "The Other", part 17 and I am very sad but this is the first time when I really felt bored. Long part where almost nothing happens except  from a few actions from Skyler (which are pretty obvious if you realize who he probably is ) Otherwise there are too long scenes about Leela´s emotions and one stupid "invention" about her personal history. All in all I think with this amount of real content, this will end like F-class soap opera.

i also hated the 'invention' about her personal history. Not because of my own personal belief regarding the topic itself, but because i just don't buy Leela doing that so late in the game. If that was something she was inclined to do she would have done it much much earlier.

That whole business was pretty jarring all in all. It seemed out of character for her if for no other reason than she seemed to arrive at that decision purely on emotion. It's subjective on my part but it doesn't seem to me that Leela would do such a thing.

My review of Part 17 of The Other is much the same. It's very obvious who Skyler is by now and the revelation is being dragged out far too long. I can usually handle out of character, so long as it isn't an extreme jump. However, an abortion in her past is highly unlikely. I could probably buy it if it happened with someone like Al or Zapp.

However, this is Fry's child we're talking about. To move on, you don't destroy the links. You cherish them. You celebrate that life. You raise the child. It matters little that she changed her mind, she still went and pissed and moaned about the fact that she could make her own decisions.

And it's true... it really helps an author to comment on things, even if only to let them know they're work is being read and appreciated, and to make sure they keep on going. I don't think I would have finished UoM without the continued support here at the time, and I'm sure other authors could use the support more than I.

That's what I've been trying to say, earlier in this thread.  I hardly received reviews such as Kif White's fanfics, not since I've pulled my fanfics off of ff.nt.

I'm glad at least TLZ has a rating system that allows fanfics to be ranked in terms of how good they were.  I have some fanfics in the top 20.  I think that is the reason why, I've sort of died down on the promoting.  Thanks to TLZ I know my fanfics are being read.
