This seems to comes up fairly often.

Try as I might, I can't find any program that'll grab from a video file properly, and I can't find these anywhere.

At the moment I'm looking for:
-Leela kicking some brain ass in the alley scene from TDESS.
-The toucan playing tennis from Bender Gets Made.

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated, and people can post any they need too. Sorry if this has been done before or whatever.

Lt. Kroker, i use a program called "VirtualDub"
It's freeware, it's easy to use, and it does a bunch of other stuff too.
To get a framegrab out of it,
1. Open the file
2. Find the frame by dragging the prograss bar and using the left and right keys,
3. Then click the 'Video' menu and 'Copy source/output frame to clipboard'
4. Open a image program, paste it, save it.
I'm pretty sure it works for DVD's as well, but i havent got a DVD drive so i can't check... http://www.digital-digest.com/dvd/downloads/virtualdub.html

Anyways, hope that helps your situation.

I've heard that you can make your own framegrabs using PowerDVD. If someone here knows how please explain.

Hokay, here goes:

First get the demo-version of PowerDVD here and install it. The trial period is 30 days, but once those expire, you just uninstall the demo, and then reinstall it for another 30 days. Takes about 20 seconds.

Play a DVD and find the scene you want. Pause the movie and hit the camera on the tool panel. This camera:

This will make a copy of the scene.

Now open a common image editor (MSPaint, Paint Shop Pro, Photoshop, whathaveyou) and select "Paste", and your framegrab will apear.
