Drumming works for me too, anything to take the focus off what's going through the head.  I've been down both routes (medicated and non-medicated).  It's all good stuff.

Maybe a color other than red for the Japan bit; it really makes it look as if the chopsticks are stabbing it and it's bleeding. I can tell you were trying to work the Japanese flag in there, but it still looks creepy.

Maybe a flat tone of red?

Shift the image of Japan a little to the left so the chopsticks aren't grabbing the red spot

hmm... nope, sorry, everyone on this thread (especially Jesse) will be after my blood, but i don't think it's up to your quality. It's an assignment, i know, but you've done things that are WAY better than that pic, sorry, but that's what i feel.

I think it looks great, FJ.

It's good, but it's a bit... plain. There's that big empty space in the to left corner. Maybe you should add another picture or a slogan or something, I dunno...
Oh, and I love the image of stabbing the world with a fork. It's creepy, but in a good way.

It looks akin to a socialist propaganda poster than an advertisement for a fair.
The broken flag represents destruction of Japan
the cracking world? we are so tough, we will 'eat it' metaphor for taking over. This is what I see though, sorry no time for constructive ideas now.

If that’s not done in layers, you’re going to kill me for this... how about if the fork hand was rotated so that the globe was clear of the chopsticks, and ‘Tokyo’ was vertical in the top left? Just a thought...

Jesse, that poster is shaping up well. But I agree with the others, the background is too plain.

For the red region, I suggest doing a flat shade and make a bold outline around the region. It would look less stab-worthy that way. I'm not sure, but it looks like you intended the chopsticks to pick up Japan like a piece of meat   ;)

Well Luis, I don't really care that its plain because the teacher seems to like simplistic styles.  As per the background, I'm thinking of using the OLD japanese rising sun flag pattern.  I'm reluctant to turn the text vertical because my target audience is my art class, which is a bunch of stupid people.  I can tell you exactly what they'd say if I did that
"It looks like you did that just to cram it in there"
And I don't want to have to deal with that.  As far as moving stuff around goes, All the linework is on one layer...  But I can go back to scratch and redraw the whole thing in illustrator.  The comp isn't due until next week anyway... and the final the week after that...

Here's the new concept for the poster.  The chopsticks are going to be lifting up the written information in a loop, pasta colored so it resembles food.

In case it doesn't hotlink: http://www.angelfire.com/pa2/femjesseart/handisp.jpg

What do you think?  Less threatening I hope?

The style is totally different, but it's not bad. The thumb looks too fat, however.

Now I just gotta wait and see how it looks with the pasta-lettering. If I were you, I would place 'Tokyo Food Fair' on the left empty space, and have the date be the pasta noodle.

My only complaint is that this is a Japanese Food Fair. Yet there is no Japanese food. Some of the most beautifull presentations I have ever seen were Japanese. The art of the food should take precidence. You gotta entice the stomach for something like that. But then again you know the teacher and in art it's really about what the teacher wants to see.

Wrongo.  Its an INTERNATIONAL food fair that TAKES PLACE in Japan.  So by showing the arbitrary noodle, I leave the ethnicity of the food open to interpretation (Italian, Chinese, Mediterranean... whatnot)I could even throw a meatball in there if I really wanted to fuck with some minds...

Edit:
Plus, some of the other students are focusing on the "Japanese presentation" aspect.  So that's OUT.

Bowl?  Background color?

It looks like it needs something on the left side, underneath the thumb. There's too much white space, IMO.
