Hello all,

Here are a few scanarts I've tried.

 http://home.austin.rr.com/zygnal/the_moment.jpg

and

 http://home.austin.rr.com/zygnal/when_leela_smiles.jpg

The straight lines are a bit jagged, as I've only just discovered
PSP's shift-click option to draw a straight line.  Oh well...

Thank you all for the nice comments, I'm going to do more, this is pretty fun!

As for the picture of Leela smiling, I have absolutely no idea how I didn't notice the tablecloth wasn't filled in.  PRobably suffering from "maximus zoomitis".

Leela's mouth in the second one need some work, but otherwise they're pretty good. Good work, Zygnal.

Teral: I know what you mean about the lips, they were a bit blurry.  It's one of Leela's most distinctive features, so essential to get right I suppose.  Thanks for the kind words.

Killerfox: thank you!

You couldn't possibly e-mail those to Jamie at FSAC, please.  So he can be kept slightly busy, while I'm away for a few days, thanks.

i wish people would stop doing scanart, all it is is a blatent rip off of someone elses work. it's not even art. Why not do an intirely original drawing and make it look like a framegrab. THAT would be art, and a lot more inpressive.

While that's a bit harsh, I'd have to agree. I could do scanart, but I don't, for that exact reason. I can trace an image and clean it up in Paint Sho Pro quite nicely, but I couldn't draw a stickfigure if I was on my own, so I just stick to what I can do with reasonable proficiency.
Do what you enjoy, though. If you like doing scanart, who are we to say you shouldn't do it?

they can do it if they want, what gets me is that people post it as if its their own. And somehow i doubt traced pictures fall under the right-to-parody law.

Neither does fanfiction, but who really keeps track of (or cares) what's legal and what isn't?

are you sure fanfiction doesn't? i thought it did. it's original work just using the charecters. i always thought original fics and pics using the charecters was covered.

No, fanfic is just as much a violation as scanart.  As is original art, for that matter.  Disney, the heirs of Margaret Mitchell and numerous others have proven otherwise in court.

And you would probably have a difficult time asserting fanfic's are safe, because you would have to assert that Futurama is such a powerful presence in society that it is ripe for parody.

You know, I could be just as mean as you were and say that a fanfic "is just a blatant ripoff of someone elses work".  Fanfics don't have to setup the characters, the settings, the society, the backstory, etc.  I might even say, "Why not do an entirely original story. THAT would be art, and a lot more impressive."

I think what everyone is doing here is an expression of appreciation, or even love.  And while understandable, that's not a legal defense, and more importantly it doesn't make anyone any better or worse than another.

So, I think I will continue until/unless I'm told to go away.  FYI I can do, but struggle at, original drawings, and one way I familiarize myself with subject matter is by tracing.  Perhaps one day I will do some original art.  Not that you asked or anything.

It's illegal allright. In order to be considered "parody", it has to be reasonably distinct from the copyrighted work, and most fanfic writers strive for the exact opposite. For a definition of parody, see the Wizard of Oz segment of "Anthology of Interest 2".

That said, fanfiction is the sort of thing that's only illegal in the technical sence. It is in no way harmful and in some ways even beneficial to the show it "rips off". Fanfics help keep fan communities going, and fan communities are essential to a successful show/literature series/game/etc. Nobody sells fanfics, and nobody would read a fanfic instead of watching/reading/playing the actual copyrighted work. Simply said, I don't lose any sleep over writing fanfics (well, ok, that's a lie - I often write/brainstorm/outline instead of sleeping), and I wouldn't stop if even if I was told to. (But that's just me; I have no respect whatsoever for copyright laws in anything other than "he ripped off my work and is publishing/selling it as his own" cases.)

Based on that, the art community would be down to "Zed 85", "The Voices" and "Daniela Schad" for all art, as they do they best original art I know of. Everyone has their right to do art, the way they know best.  Most of us, put our names on the picture so every knows who did their version of the picture, not claiming credit for the original.

I've tried fanfics, and although I'm not a writer at all (failed English in school) at least I'm willing to try alternate ideas compared to what I'm better known for in this community.

the difference between fics and scans is that when writing you make up the dialogue, you make up scenerios, and in a lot of cases you make up original charactors to interact with the ones you have. with scans, you don't make up anything. you just trace. the written equivelent of scans aren't fics, their transcripts.

Personally, about the only reason I ever do scanart is with hopes of creating a new avatar, signature, or wallpaper. While I wouldn't call it art per se either, some artistic skill is involved, especially in shading. I would guess that the main reasons anyone does scanart are:
1) To practice their photoshop/MS paint/whatever skills.
2) To create cleaner version of pics for use in avatars, signature, wallpapers, etc.
3) For personal satisfaction.

And I won't even delve into copyright issues. If the RIAA got one look at my hard drive, they'd probably have a collective embolism. I don't know whether it's right or wrong, but I certainly don't think anyone scanarts with malicious intent.

Hi there, here's a new picture I was working on:

 http://home.austin.rr.com/zygnal/holophonor.jpg

Mostly to learn how to use transparency. I'm using GIMP now instead of PSP, it is a little hard around the edges, especially gradient fills.

I hope to learn how to do highlight shading next.

Also, ]PaulFSAC[, if you still want me to send those pictures, I'd be glad to (if you think they're worth it).

Thanks Beamer,
The more I play around with this, the more I wish I had a tablet.  Can't really justify it, though.

It's still fun, though -- I guess part of the fun is seeing what you can do with what you've got.
