Hello everyone ... it's been a while since I last posted something on this board so here I am again. Here's my newest project: I'm trying to build a (little) robot devil (or at least its head). That's the "prototype" made out of paper. I'm planing to build it out of 1mm metal or wood. I'm not sure what to use best at the moment. Any advices? Anyway ... I didn't start to build it yet so if there's anything wrong with the paper model let me know so I might fix it! Ps.: I know that the horns are missing but I have absolutely no idea how to build them at the moment.

Metal will require lots of welding/soldering, smoothing/polishing, etc. However, you just cut out shapes and put 'em together, then refine it. Wood will require cutting, putting together, sanding and maybe some carving as well (such as cutting a square block, then carving/sanding it until you get a nice cylinder with his shape for things like the body). Each side had it's bad points. I think it depends on what tools you have at your disposal as to what you make him out of. I think, if you make it out of wood, it'd be nicer because you could paint him, to to mention make cool arms and legs that could have joints, so he could sit in chairs/off ledges/etc. And a little yarn tail with a wooden spike at the end. That would be darling!
look at me, I'm getting off in a tangent!!! He's looking fantastic as a paper model so far!! I certainly hope you get him done soon. I bet the final piece will be phenomenal!
The horns could be made for your paper model by rolling some paper into cones which could be bent to the proper shape. As for actual fabrication... Wood could be cut into a thick cylinder, then whittled at or sanded into a curved point. Metal could be done a lot like paper, where you fold it over, then bend it into a horn.
I'm not exactly a master at making things like this (never tried) but I'm guessing that it would work.

Ok: I already noticed a few mistakes by myself after watching some clips from "Hell is other robots" and "The devils hands ..." again. 1) In some scenes he has two "1957 chevy" like tail fins on the back of his head which I completely ignored in the paper model. 2) He only has 2 teeth on each side of his head. I gave him 4. The new model will have 3 because I don't know how it should work with only 2 in reality. 3) I made a mistake with his chin. It looks a bit different from my version. Let me know if there is something else. (The way his head is connected to his neck in the show wouldn't work in reality because in the show his neck is connected to his jaw which would make it impossible to move his jaw up and down the way he does when he speaks. Watch @ 1:24 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SBqkvyT-uZQ )

All I say is good job so far The eyes could be a bit smaller. Like 2 boxes shorter. But that would mean you have to shorted his head as well to keep the balance. It's just a thought. watching some clips from "Hell is other robots" and "The devils hands ..." again.
Uh huh. Make mine 3,587th time.

YES, MA'AM! The problem is: The nose is a one of the smallest parts of the head and it's nearly impossible to bend it propaly with the tools I have. I would need other tools which I don't own. There's a "big" gap between the front and the side of the nose. It only looks good at the picture because you can't see the details on the bad quality picture I made with my mobile phone. The head and the jaw turned out really good so far I guess but that's because they are much bigger and "simpler" than the nose. EDIT: I checked my local hardware store today but they didn't have thinner metal, so I decited to "cheat" a little. I will cut the nose from a 10 mm piece of wood. Since I'm gonna paint the head anyway I think this will look OK. EDIT 2:

Good news everyone! ... Update: The stupid skullcap nearly made me throw the whole thing out of the window. It took me more than 2 hours just to bend it!!! But now it fits ... well let's say it fits 90 %. By the way: I'm thinking about using car filler (I hope that's the right word. If not: Curse you, "leo.org"! ) to create a smooth surface.

The stupid skullcap nearly made me throw the whole thing out of the window. It took me more than 2 hours just to bend it!!! Good job! You have more patience than I. Also more skill...By the way: I'm thinking about using car filler (I hope that's the right word. If not: Curse you, "leo.org"! ) to create a smooth surface. Not a bad idea. Also, it's " Bondo," at least here in the US. Keep up the good work. I'll just...ooze... back out under the shop door now...

Clever Case; I geddit...
Case of what? If you live near a slaughterhouse you could get real horns which would give RD a touch of reality. Let me see if I have this straight: We're discussing fabricating a model of a fictional character from a cartoon... And you want to add realism?Yeah... I'll just... ooze... back out under the door now...

Sorry I did not use your entire name when I appreciated your little joke, no such props for you in the future. Also the devil (if you believe in that sort of thing) had goat horns. Robot Devil was modeled, i assume, after that devil. Hence the use of the word realism. How many degrees do you have to get away from the original character before you stop thinking about the original character?

Also the devil (if you believe in that sort of thing) had goat horns.
Of course, he/it never did before the middle ages. That's when Christians began depicting Lucifer with horns and goat's hindquarters - because the Pagans had held to their worship of the Horned God (which appears thus). By turning their God into the Devil, the Christians were able to more easily eradicate the old ways.
