I love the leela with a lightsaber pic Zed         
Is there a tutorial anywhere on how to do lightsaber's in photoshop         

EDIT: here's a picture of the robot devil. I think the shading make's it look...well, shit.       
(sorry about the border, my scanner has a habbit of cropping an image too close to the picture.)

p.s- I'm gonna try and 'scan' it later...so If you don't want to see a crap picture, don't visit this thread.

Look my man-wich and soylentOrange, no-ones art is complete crap, its just that some people are artisticly challenged, but I know that neither of you are so stop picking at youtself, you're both brillient artists and you know it.

Yes the shading was intentional. More to try and add something interesting than anything else.      And yes you're correct it was the dodge tool. There was rather a lot of burn and dodge used in general in fact. The sky was the only gradient and yes you're correct it was one of the lens flares, I can't remember which one.

P.s. any tips on lining would be gratefully received here.

You, my friend, draw kingly pictures! Your scanning, however, could do with a little work. Especially the colouring. But hey! Practice makes perfect.

You say the expression looks dumb...I do have a suggestion if you really want to change it - you could try a more scheming look. To do this you can just narrow his eye slits asuch - especially by raising the lower section. I experimented with it myself, and I personally believe this could really add to the pic.

Shading worked well all in all  I was in love with the dodge/burn tools on photoshop for ages, only recently moved to cell shading (I think I wanted to copy SPBPetr's style, what with him being my god and all).

I suppose they're not as controlled/nuanced as other methods, but they give a solid, strong effect that lets you learn the tricks and opens the door to trying other techniques if you ever feel like it. Only thing is to pick a direction the light is coming from and A) stick to it, B) be able to imagine where the shadows fall, and you're away!

Lining? I'm flattered, but I never found a way to get photoshop to line without a lot of time and hassle. Paint Shop Pro 7 has a great way though (very quick, very consistent), I could share that if you're interested - as it's an older program, it's fairly easy to 'obtain', or I'd be happy to try and send you a copy. But I do know that other folk have got photoshop to line for them, so there must be tutorials out there!

Hey - love the shiny vapour trail in the second pic, how'd you _do_ that? The only way I can think of would be appallingly time consuming, and you wouldn't know if it'd worked until it was almost over...

I'm admiring Leela's arm- and bust- lines in the first one - nice to know the original animators got a little carried away sometimes too! Well scanned though, very smooth looking.

@Marcus: well ok, maybe scan isn't the right word.  These are both framegrabs I created myself and then edited a bit.  The shiny vapor tail was in the original grab (the first ad from Futurestock)  I just smoothed it out and removed a few excess pixels.  I want to get my hands on Flash and do some real scans, but I just havent gotten around to it yet.

Could Someone point out any/all the error's In this picture.
I tried to fix as many as I could, but the character's have to be PERFECT:
edited out due to crapness
PS- I haven't drawn leela's hand.

What I think needs fixing:
-fry's neck
-Leela's stomach
-fry's left eye
-leela's lips
-the bottom line on leela's eye (?)

I think it looks very good already. This will sound strange though because I could make several suggestions about Leela but then I don't know that it wouldn't just be from my own style and experience of drawing her. Fry I personally think looks alright - but then again, I draw Leela rediculously more often than Fry.
I can point out a few points - please accept them just as constructive critism. 

-Leela's nose - slightly larger dimensions
-Leela's stomach - needs to curve inwards a fair deal more - it will begin to curve back out as well before the cut-off.
-Leela's chest - I personally feel they could be slightly lower. I always feel that the base of the...um...breast, (Oh I feel so dirty!) to be just above the line of the elbow - or there or there about.
-Leela's tanktop - usually exposes more of her arm pit if you know what I mean.
-Ears - you seem to be missing the top line of the inner-ear.
-Leela's ponytail - would curve in more with the back of her head. The top of it is correct, but otherwise you wouldn't much more of it behind Fry's head - especially not the "tail" - USUALLY.
-Eyes - Fry is staring into Leela's hair while Leela seems to be taking a fancy towards Fry's neck. 

But anyway - it looks very promising. You're drawing the characters a hellofalot better than I was drawing when I started out.

here's the edited version (thanks to zed for the help) complete with my stupid signature:


What I changed:
-Leela's Nose- I made it slightly bigger. (Zed)
-Leela's stomach- Curved it in. (Zed)
-Leela's breasts- Lowered. (Zed)
-Leela's tanktop- I removed the tanktop that was over the side of her breast. (Zed)
-Ear's- Fixed the lines (Zed)
-Leela's ponytail- I brang it back behind fry's head. (Zed/Benders_fan/kit katbarfry)
-Eye/s- Fixed where they were looking, and fry's left eye (Zed)
-Leela's lips- I made the edge more curved.

Great pics, Doug.  Maybe they'd look better on a 30" screen, but great nonetheless. 

@my man-wich:  Brilliant work, the changes have really improved the pic.  One thing I might suggest though, is that maybe the 'spikes' on the front of Leela's hair could be more... spiky.

@manwich: I'd say about 50/50 these days. For instance, Leela with a Lightsaber was originally hand drawn - however Leela as Revan wasn't, that was entirely done in photoshop. Originally, all my pictures were originally hand-drawn, but I've become proficient with Photoshop/lazy enough to start many complete from scratch on the computer. Today I would almost say it was more photoshop than hand, but just recently I've taken to sketching out pictures then colouring them in in photoshop, which effectively makes them hand-drawn - however, the process is different to what I used to do.

My man-wich: Looks good but you might want to stretch Fry's upper lip out to more of a point, unless you're trying to show teen Fry.
Leela's pretty close except the arch of the bottom of her eye should center over her nose, not offset to her left.

Fry's head is awful to try to draw - when I finish him, I've usually erased a hole in the paper...

Nicely pixelled pix, Paul - very fond of the expressions, haven't seen those looks in  pics of that scene before! Was it a straight grab, or did you alter expressions?

The expressions are from the episode in question.  I printed the scene, draw a grid over it and then went at it using Paint/Paint Shop Pro to buid it pixel by pixel.

I know i'm exceptionally late coming to the party, but i wanted to give coloring Marcus' pic a go. And to make it different from the other color-jobs, i've made it a night scene. I had a really hard time figuring out where the shadows should go, hopefully i didn't do too bad of a job.
