I wanted to show you guys (and gals) my renderings of Bender so I can get another opinion on them. I need to know if the proportions are ok and whatnot.  Feel free to be as nitpicky as you like cause I want it to be as close to perfect as humanly possible  :)

This was modeled in 3D using 3DS MAX and then rendered using Illustrate! to get the 2d cartoon feel to it.  Right now I've just done a 'standard' pose and once I get the dimensions downpat, I'll add a skeletal stucture undernearth so I can pose him for more pictures and possibly even do some short animations later on.

Thanks for any criticism!

Hmmm, very good. Nurdy likes. His mouth looks too big though.

That was good, But I thought the body was a little bit boxy, even though that is what his body is  :), and the body looks big

Torso's a bit thick and the legs are a bit short.  Looks good, though.

The visor looks a bit square. It should be rounder than that.

One more thing, there needs to be more of an edge around the visor. It looks paper thin right now.

One more thing, the antenna's a bit fat. But still, great work.

Actually, now that I have Volume 4 of Futurama on DVD I checked out the "How to Draw Bender" section so I can get him more accurate looking. (BTW, in case anyone wants to know, Bender's head plus antenna is 5 1/2 eyes tall, his head is approx. 2 heads wide and he stands just over 3 heads tall. )  :)I know up until now, I've had a heck of a time drawing him by hand and getting him in proportion.  I'm just adjusting the 3d Bender model and I should be able to post the new renderings in about a day or so. (It'd be sooner but unfortunately I have to go to work which takes time away from my drawing and Futurama DVD watching time) But no work means no money, and no money means I can't buy and Futurama merchandise LOL

Thanks for the help!

Gals? Where? Where?!

If you really do intend to improve it, here's a few nitpicks :
  • Feet : I'm pretty sure that they're not aligned dead-center, but this is coming from a guy who hasn't watched an episode in a yesr and a bit, so make up your own mind
  • Torso : Too big at the top-half, or maybe too big overall, but not by much.
  • "Neck" : Too rounded, should be straight from the top of the torso to the bottom of the head.
  • Mouth : Too long, and not tall enough, you should be able to see the ends from the front-on view.
  • Nose : Oh, wait...
  • Eyes & Visor are too big, visor could be a bit more rounded too
  • Antenna : Need to be thinner, but the ball thing on top should stay the same size as it is now.

But it is good, just a few proportional errors, that make it look a bit out of whack.

One thing that I noticed is that you took the time to make bender's visor curve inward as it goes back (I think). Very few people remember that this needs to be done (I didn't either when I made bender in 3d), but it's a really important touch. Good job!

Thanks!  I'm striving for accuracy and am trying to make it indistinguishable from the cartoon.  I'm reworking everything right now and it's taking even longer that I thought!  I got some screen grabs from the How to Draw Bender section on Volume 4 and am using that as a model so I can get everything in proportion.  I'm reworking his head right now and didn't realize what a pain it was to get the overbite!  It's a killer!  When I initially started, I thought that Bender would be great to experiment with cause he's so easy.  Boy was I wrong!  There are so many things that need to be done to get him authentic looking and it looks easier than it really is.

I've finished up Bender's head.  All I need to figure out is how to round off the front part of his visor so it doesn't look so flat.  I posted them on the same page as my old renderings for comparison.

Stupid free web server that's always down!  GRRR!

Anyhow, I've got another web site with the pics on it for those who were unable to see the new renderings: http://jenutech.sasktelwebsite.net/
