John Safran vs. God: Episode 7
Acquired this one that I missed last week. Pretty good episode. There wasn't any road tested religion though. The Mormon underwear was interesting, as was the soccer curse.

It certainly was very strange to see John acting like that, and the first time seeing it could probably make the most stelwart Atheist have doubts. I'd have to guess it may have had something to do with pressure points and psychology. A friend had the theory that if anybody starting hitting you in the head with bibles and not letting you sit down would make anybody act like that.   
EDIT: Just remembered: For anybody who likes to keep a track on the Futurama cast outside of Futurama, Lauren Tom is apparently guest-starring in this Saturdays Monk.

Well, it sure made me have doubts... although I think it's more pyschological than religious. Either way, it wasn't fake - John can't act that well.

Ive been told that that guy had manipulated john by hypnotising him. However, when he made reference to some crazy sounding demon, that wouldnt have happened. On JJJ john said that it wasnt fake and he wasnt acting.

If we assume that John wasn't putting us on, that leaves us with two options:

1. The Excorsist was fucking with him somehow.

or

2. John was possessed by demons.

Now, as far as I'm concerned, demons don't exist, so that leaves me with the one option. Now the question remains as to how they did it...

He did more than a few times, If john was hypnotised how did he make reference to the biblical demon. It was just freaky, where was the closing rant that explained it all?

His face was just creepy. The guy made him apoligise to hitler, damn.

Maybe he somehow found a way to expose the primal instincts of humans? Some of the faces John made reminded me of the faces gorillas and apes make when they're scared or angry, and the screaming sounded pretty primal.
It was actually quite funny to see John recount his adventures and Bob Larson tsking everything he said. Funniest quote: "Australia needs Jesus!"

There was no commentary on this because it wasn't appropriate. It was showing the darker side of religion.

I dont know what you guys think, but that preacher has a full on cult mentality. It disturbs me that kids are being exposed to him. There was also no commentary because none was needed to make it seem ridiculous.

Oh, and I'd be very surprised If john hadn't studied up before he went to see this guy so he could properly put on a show. Did you hear the camera man say he'd never seen John act that way before. If John was so shook up by it then why would he have bothered to finish the show.

Nope. No opening rant - they didn't even play the John Safran vs God intro.

You're definately right about the preacher, though. Being an atheist myself, there were just some things he said about religion that made me want to leap up and beat him over the head with a chair. I hate people like that... although the bits where he was reading through Safran's list of religions he's had connections with did give me a few laughs. 

Despite Mikey's comments about the biblical demon, I think that hypnotism is up there with the most logical explanations to this episode. I know that John Safran's done a lot of things in this show that go against his principles, but I think that forgiving Hitler definately goes beyond his line.

Especially the part where he said Australia was godless. The Americas was A dumping ground for Europes rejects long before Australia.

And If he was A bonafide born again christian and not a brainwashing cult guy. He would know that Australia has A strong christian base.

Its A basic brainwashing tactic. Giving untrue opinions that doesn't sound right to the subject, but is willing to give the brainwasher the benefit of the doubt. It establishes trust and credibility in the subjects mind in regards to the brainwsher, and breaks down their own self-crebility.

i just watched Episode 8 of john safran and it WAS really alarming... it certainly wasn't the same style as the other shows, and the end rant didn't 'make everything okay'.... i was waiting and waiting for the logical and comical explanation or contemplation at the end and all i got was the credits!..
it's rather alarming that he of all people would actually do all those things... maybe that guy DID hypnotise him...

or maybe he left it like that to make us think and sleep uneasy..

grrrr...

yeah i missed the last ep of the Amazing Race, saw the last 5 mins, and saw who got booted, was it a decent ep? i hope it comes through Australia again, it was funny hearing them say "Moo-Loo-Lar-Bar" in "Mell-Bourne". also Col, whats with the capital "A"'s?

Well, I bought the Safran DVD. Episode 4 with the Xtreme Mormon films was awsome, and Episode 8 was just plain scary. Not something I could watch over and over again. If he was acting, he is a fucking good actor - and I don't think he could do that.

The extras on the DVD are good - there are a few stories that didn't make the show, as well as deleted scenes and some other goodies. Not quite up to Music Jamboree extras, but that is because there was a lot of non-relevant stuff on the Music Jamboree set. Awsome non-relevant stuff.
