For me it's definately got to be the first Matrix. I remember the first time I watched it, I was thinking about it all the next day, and then watched it again when I got back home. It had a really big impact on me, and blew me away. Both the sequals are definately good, and not as bad as they're often made out to be, in my opinion. But they seem to be lacking the special quality of the first. Perhaps the freshness, and suprise, which couldn't be re-captured. They did however continue the storyline, showing us how much deeper the rabit hole went. Unfortuantely, it didn't turn out to be that much deeper. Despite this, I still very much enjoyed them both. Maybe they couldn't live up to the first, but that was going to be almost impossible anyway. I was happy to see some human emotion, and feeling, and not all just action, as amazing though the action was. I did get the feeling that both sequals had in part, been Hollwoodised, but luckily only tarnished, and not completely ruined. These are just my opinions though. The Matrix trilogy is one of my very favorite trilogies ever, along with the Terminator trilogy, and Back to the Future trilogy. But the first is in a class of it's own!

I dub thee the official Matrix thread of PEEL.
Anyway, in order of preference:
1. Matrix 2. Revolutions 3. Reloaded

Official? In that case, I'll bring this up here. Did anyone notice in the first Matrix, the name of the guy who comes to Neo and asks for that CD thing was Choi? That means that on the Closed Captioning, his line shows up as "Choi: Hallelujah." That's one letter away from "Choir: Hallelujah." Cool, huh?
...But I digress. 1st Matrix all the way. Then Revolutions right behind it, and Reloaded just barely trailing.

Lord no, the Matrix was horrible. #2 was almost all sizzle and no steak. Hardly any of my questions from the first movie were answered and #2 only raised more!
And Neo sucks! Why is it that a computer program (agent smith) has more personality than him?? LOL.
The third one should have been called Morpheus and Neo's excellent adventure.

I think that if all three films were watched for the first time one after the other, Revolutions would widely be considered the best. Don't get me wrong I love the original, but people are voting it the best because it was so groundbreaking at the time. It's not fair that the sequals should have to beat that. If you think about it once the main concept has been set up (the world is only virtual reality, "You are the ONE!"...) not much actualy happens in the original! If you take away the impact on pop culture the first film had. And the overhyping of the sequals caused by the long wait, each part has an equal opertunity to be judged on it's own merits as a film. Viewed as a complete trilogy and not as "One groundbreaking first part, then two long delayed sequels" I think revolutions is the best part.
I think that makes sense? Did my point come across? Anyway, Revolutions gets my vote.

All three had thier slow moments, but the only thing i'm really dissapointed in is the... ...Corny ending to revolutions All three had wicked sequences/FX, and i enojoyed them all immencely... By Action/FX etc.Reloaded Revolutions Orig. By Storyline elementsOrig. Revolutions Reloaded By Sound (And yes this does deserve its own category ) Reloaded Revolutions Orig. It is worth pointing out that i didn't see the original at the flicks, but i'm pretty sure it would have been weaker comparitively OverallAll equally good, each one had its own wicked bits and of course poor bits, but i think they were all immencely enjoyable. Rant Directed at Fanboys temorarily averted, check back after they start pissing me off.

Here's my two cents (ARV: 1/100 cent) (no plotline spoilers, i just dont want to offend anyone) The Matrix- Incredibly good movie. It is a mix of philosophy and action. A perfect amount of Bullet-time and just the right amount of love. My second Favorite movie behind Black Hawk Down and before Saving Pvt. Ryan and Kill Bil Vol. 1. You cant get better than this. 10/10
Reloaded- Ive only seen this one once, but i wont pay to see this again. Ill borrow it from a friend. This movie was bad. It brought in too much over-the-top philosophy. The Vampires were a horrible addition, same with the Merovincian and Persephone (i think that was her name, ya know, the one wioth the cleavage). They were bad because they weren't agents and they weren't normal people. It's better when they fight normal people who are unaware of the Matrix. The addition of Neo controlling the Real world made him too powerful. The million smiths were bad and made it very unbelieveable. The first was at least somewhat feaseable. A Bad movie. 3/10
Revolutions- This movie is pointless. It was an action fest. This movie is suitable for action monkeys who have no taste in movies. The APU's were stupid and made it too sci-fi. The train station was confusing and unnecesary. They should have called it something elses. Most of the movie wasn't in the Matrix at all. The Best part was when Neo and Smith were fighting, but ONLY when they were on solid ground. The super-megaton-monster-flying-incredible-spectacular-punches Were stupid. It was kinda cool to see Neo puch Smith in Slow-mo, though. The head machine thing was something like in House on Haunted Hill. I say that the only part in the movie that was genius like the first one was taking the Logos above the clouds and seeing the Sun in the real world for the first time. Pure genius in a bad movie. 3.5/10

My opinions (in spoilers, just in case): The Martix: Brilliant, original film combining amazing visuals, jaw-dropping action, and philosophy. Helped me understand Buddhism and thus pass my World Religions Class. Infinatly rewatchable.
The Matrix Reloaded: Disapointing, but still entertaining. Not as bad as people claimed it was, but not what I was hoping for. Talky without going eeper into the philosophy I loved so much in the original. Gratuitus sex scene. Neo wouldn't stop flying. Ghost twins underused. Not all that rewatchable.
The Matrix Revolutions: Closer in spirit to the original, a lot of fun until it's ending, which was a big letdown (another thing this movie has in common with the first, IMO). Less philosophy, but also less talky. Complete lack of Ghost twins disappointing. New Oracle distracting. Rewatchable, but only to a point. So I gotta go with the first. Long after I'm sick of 2 & 3, I'll still be watching my DVD of The Matrix.

Um, are we going to use this thread, the Reloaded thread, or the "It Stinks!" thread? Because I don't want to spread my opinion out over three threads.
Okay, the first one was pretty good. An A. Reloaded had its faults, but wasn't as bad many made it out to be. Still, it was disappointly good. B-. And, just coming from Revolutions, I feel so let down. Peter Travis of Rolling Stone was right when he said "The Matrix [revolutions] sucks." D+
Okay, now that's out of the way. I really hope that this is the end of the Matrix series. No number 4, no number 5, no more. Each passing movie gets worse and worse. They should have just stopped with the first one and kept in pristine. But no...$$ had to rear its ugly head.
