Do you like it? Anyway, in case you don't know, the "Scully era" is seasons 9-12 when it was executive produced by Mike Scully. Anyway, once it was over, season 13 was a huge improvement and season 14 started out bad because some of Scully's crap got held over but, once they showed it, they showed the episodes they did that were executive produced by Al Jean and they were grade "A" stuff. If you can watch Moe Baby Blues and not like it, you need to return your TV to the store and tell them that you're too dumb to own it.

I love The Simpsons, it's still better than a lot of the crap that's on nowadays.

BTW: this thread is probably doomed to the fiery depths of the 9th level of Nurdbots pants.

But the other Simpsons threads are one sided. The others are all "best quotes", "I like it", or "I don't like it". This one asks people if THEY like it. Also, I'm glad to see someone else that appreciates The Simpsons. *salutes ~Faze~*

I dunno if it's Mike Scully, of the start of Futurama, or whatever, but the show's quality took a major hit during the 9th-10th seasons, and it's never really recovered.

Actually, It's 9-12 plus the holdovers. But I think it's recovered some thanks to Al Jean. In fact, "Three gays of the condo", "Bart of war", "Mr Spritz goes to Washington", and "Moe baby blues" are all classic era quality.

I have to disagree with your statement that parts of Season 14 were grade "A" material. I've watched all this past season (except for Moe Baby Blues, which hasn't aired) and I honestly can't say I've enjoyed any of the episodes; indeed, I've got bored halfway through most of them and turned it off to do something else.

I still watch them, though:

a) because otherwise pro-post-Season 9 Simpsons fans whine "Oh, you haven't been watching the past few seasons"

b) because ocassionally (and I do mean very occasionally), there are still flashes of brilliance.

"New" Simpsons I find is funnier when you're watching it with other people, whereas "Classic" Simpsons can make me laugh out loud when I'm watching it by myself.

(I also disagree with the honorable ~Faze~'s statement, as well, due to the magic of DVD.  ;)).

I'm going to hold off voting until I've seen "Moe Baby Blues", because I've heard plenty of good things about it and it's written by an ex-Futurama staffer.

I really do want to give the Simpsons a chance, it deserves at least that. But it just feels to me like a slightly less crude version of "Family Guy"  at the moment.

(All this is opinion and is liable to change at any time, at my discretion. It is however how I feel when I wrote this post).

I'm glad you're giving it a chance. Moe Baby Blues was just so dripping with greatness all I can even say to even come anywhere near justifying it is "Best. Episode. EVER!"

Edit: By "best episode", I mean of ANY show. Not just The Simpsons

Agh, that excuse is horrible. Sure, there's hardly anything good on television, because the majority of mainstream media prefers crap over quality, but there is still good stuff on television. And if for some reason you complete loathe all there is on tv, you have DVD's and the internet. If you're looking for quality entertainment (or naughty asian schoolgirl porn), there's an infinite amount of it on the internet. Sure, there's a lot of crappy stick cartoons and reptitive "kill Osama Bin Laden/Suddam Hussein" games, but look beyond those. The link thread is enough proof of the entertainment value the web has. Than there's DVDs. There are so many movies/concerts/tv shows available on DVD, that you should never be bored if you have a DVD-player. Than there's video games. There's so many different types of video games that just about anyone can find one to suit their personality.
Oh, and don't forget the fact that you are not locked inside your house.

My point is, the excuse that nothing good is on tv, isn't really an excuse for the Simpson's recent crappiness.
It's ironic. People used to crticize Family Guy all the time because they claimed it was a rip-off of the Simpsons (but than again, apparently any TVPG-TVMA cartoon is a rip-off of either the Simpsons, South Park, or King of the Hill to the mainstream public) and maybe it was, but it seems now that the Simpsons is a popular TVPG rip-off of Family Guy. Problem is, anybody who hasn't been watching the Simpsons from the start realizes it's decline in quality. I'll admit the show has become a tad more tolerable recently, but it's still miles away form it's old self.

I still like the show, but I don't think any recent episode even comes close to the old days. I haven't seen Moe Baby Blues, but I hated nearly everything from the last season. There were a couple of OK ones, but it all seemed awkward and desperate.

Sure, it's better than a lot of crap on TV, but what isn't? There are still plenty of shows that are better.

Season 14 started off HORRIBLY I will admit (toward the end it was approaching classic quality though.  Moe Baby Blues was easily one of the best episodes ever and I agree with Leelaholic that anyone who doesn't agree with that simply shouldn't be watching television).  But other then that, Jean has made a lot of improvements and its much better then it was in the Scully era.  Is it as good as 1-8?  No.  But nothing is and in all honesty one can't really expect a show that's been on for 14 years to be at its peak anymore, and I think it is a testament to the quality of the show and of the work many people on it are doing that its gotten good again at all.

My vote: I love it but not the Scully era.

I just can't watch them anymore. It's not the new eps that's the problem, well kind of, but I can't even watch the classics! I'm not sure why. As I've said, I think it may be because I think Futurama should've taken over or something. Or maybe I can't stand to watch fox. I've tried to watch them, but I usually end up trning it off. I used to watch them with my family every Sunday bu tnow I'm just losing interest in it.

Now that my rant over my personal problems is over,   :p, I'd conclude from what I have seen and what I have remembered from the Simpsons. Yes, I enjoy almost every episdoe I have seen, despite the Scully era. I'm voting for # 3. It just doesn't beat Futurama, and Family Guy barely beats it out- making it the last out of these three shows that get compared oh so often.   :)

I can't hate the Simpsons.  If it weren't for that, Futurama might have not have been as much watched as it is now.  It launched Matt to celeb status and we all knew Futurama would be good as soon as we heard it was being done by Matt.  And since David X(S) Cohen joined the ride, we all realized who he was.  And besides, I grew up with Simpsons ever since I was born.  I'm older than the series, but I still had the clips to keep me company.  Who invented the character "Lindsay Naigal" anyway?  That is the worst character ever on a tv show.  They should kill her while they're writing.  I would rather see Mrs. Simpsons (Homer's mom) live than her.  I hate her.   :finger:  I would kill her if I was able to....   But the Simpsons is excellent.  Just not the Scully years.  The Scully years were crap.  The rest is good.  I'm glad they're making some scripts that relate to the people who have been dedicated watchers for so long and have better memory spans than the inferior fans.

I started loving the show again after season 13. First half of season 14 did suck, but then you got stuff like "Break My Wife Please" and "Moe Baby Blues" near the end which were just awsome.

I didn't think that the Scully stuff was that bad until the CBC started airing the show from the beginning.  Man, the old stuff is great.  Scully's era has the jokes, but not the heart of the earlier seasons. So, I voted for 3. Also, I didn't like Moe Baby Blues that much, but I've never really liked Moe, so that really didn't work for it.

You can't blame Mike Scully for the downfall of The Simpsons. It's the whole staff's fault. Even after Scully left and Al Jean took over, it didn't get any better. In fact, it got worse. Basically, here's a little break-down...

SEASONS 1-2: Classic, although they weren't that funny, and they were waaaay too preachy.

SEASONS 3-9: Just terrific. The golden age of The Simpsons. Great writing, hillarious jokes and such an awesome style.

SEASONS 10-14: Awful, just plain awful. Though there may be 10 or so good episodes in this batch of crap, it can't distract from the fact that it's complete garbage. The show began to get stupid and the characters just didn't seem to matter anymore. The Simpsons writers tried to adjust to modern whacky-sattire comedy (like seen in South Park and Family Guy) but just failed miserably.

Anyway, I'm not voting. Leelaholic didn't give us enough options (I'd vote for #2, but then I'd be saying that I like the Al Jean era too). This poll should have been split into Seasons - it's just too biased.

I couldn't agree more. I hate the Al Jean years so far more than the Scully ones. Scully had HOMR, Trilogy of Error and Behind the Laughter, which were fantastic. I haven't liked anything at all from the last two seasons. The ending of Bart of War was good, but I still had to sit through 19 minutes of stunted dialogue and obvious jokes.

In my experience, TV shows go through 3 stages:
1. The golden years
2. Decline
3. Trying to recapture former glory, and failing.

The Simpsons has only just entered stage 3, and I'm finding it pretty unwatchable for the first time.

I can't believe people like the newer Al Jean episodes. I haven't watched a whole lot of them, but every episode I've seen has been just as "wacky" and just as unfunny as the old Scully episodes.

I don't think The Simpsons is capable of being funny anymore. Just imagine if a season 2-4 episode aired nowadays. It would be so out of place, it's ridiculous.

About the only episodes that "worked" (at least for me) during the "Scully era" were the episodes which didn't follow standard format (e.g. Tales from the Public Domain, Trilogy of Error, Behind The Laughter, etc).

HOMR wasn't that bad (it was a hell of a lot better than that awful "Simpson gene" episode).

I don't like the new stuff much at all.  I watched the first half of last season and the only episode I cared for was "Bart vs. Lisa vs. the Third Grade".  Everything else I saw was pretty awful IMO.  I'll probably watch the THOH episode for this coming season, but that's it.  The newer seasons have essentially become Family Guy with better animation and there's nothing I like about Family Guy.

The Simpsons has gone way down hill from it's amazing beginnings.  I will try to watch a new episode every so often, but I won't go out of my way to see it.  Having said that, it is still much better than most of the crap that's dumped on the airways these days.

I dont think scully can get all the blame,
and its not like it became that bad, just not as good.
i heard someone say it got too wacky under scully.
i think swartzwelder writes some of the crazier episodes and moments he's been there from the beginning.
i'm not criticising him but you cant only blame scully for the shows craziness.
and seasons 11 and 12 stll put out great episodes
(9 and 10 were still fantastic just some occasinal lapses in season 10)
such as
grift of the magi
days of wine and doh'ses
the computer wore menace shoes
homr
and posibley the great money caper

also the diffrentley styled episodes
which were already mentioned
