Ok lets vote regular sci-fic nerds .. but Starfighter must come from movies/series (no videogames allowed , thought there are some really cool in)

It's a tough choice between the B5 Starfuries and the X-Wings from Star Wars, but I have to go with the X-Wings, for not needing CGI to look cool.

I have to go for the Starfuries. The most realistically designed starfighter of the lot, plus they look the biz.

Yeap.. in fact, along with the Battlestar gallactica Starfighters (wich were made by John Dysktra, same guy than in SW special efeccts) i think that they are a lot better in scale models than in CGI

I know it not a true fighter but the Eagles from Space 1999 have always intrigued me.

Honorable mention should go to the "Hammerheads" from Space-Above and beyond. Another excellent Sci-Fi show cancelled too soon.

Indeed, that was a great show, it sucks that it got canned after a single series  :(

I'm going to go with B-5's Star Furies, they were cool, and were able to fly around more like I would expect a ship in space to move.  Runner-up goes to the Hammerheads.

On one of the B5 commentaries, JMS said that NASA actually asked to use the StarFury model as a future design for their space fighters because they were the best designed for use in space. The StarFuries have always looked more practical and still manage to look cool. Even if they are CGI (but even so, B5 was the first show to use CGI. StarFuries were the first!   :p)

Space: Above and Beyond was pretty cool. When it first came out I wasn't that impressed with it but I should have stuck with it longer. The Hammerheads looked great too.

And don't forget Aeryn Sun's Prowler.

Actually in The Last StarFighter all spaceships were CGI , the GunStar Starfighter had about 1.000.000 faces and there was one scene in wich they show a full squadron of them (12 ships) in a CGI hangar.. all that with 1983 computers.

Sorry, I meant B5 was the first TV show to use CGI  :) But yeah, despite the age of the effects 'Last Starfighter' still looks great. And just think, if that one Gunstar could defeat the whole fleet just think what that whole squadron could do...  :evillaugh:

Excuse me, but what about the classic line of computer games?  They had some mad cool starfighters.

"Greetings, Starfighter! You have been recruited by the Star League to defend the frontier against Xur and the Ko-Dan Armada!"

I *heart* Gunstars.

I think I'm going to have to go with the one from The Last Starfighter. Just because it's one of my favorite movies.

To Which, Lurrr quoted from Javier:

I do agree though, the movie was unadulterated crap. The games were so much better and the fighters were cool (and didn't look like WW2 planes in space).

I was originaly going to say the Excalibur from Wing Commander 3 but you only listed the shitty movie. So second would definately have to be the Macross VF-1S Veritech Fighter.

Yeap , WingCommander was full of fighters, so FreeSpace, Freelancer.. but if i go with the games i would have to get a 20 slots poll. Anyway when i love the Wing Commander saga (i`m beating WC4 now) the movie was 100% shit.. the only had to get the original fighters/ships.. but no! let`s do crap ships
