Yeah, I guess you could say that Lain was a rough draft of sorts.  Chiaki J. Konaka later went back to the same ideas, polished them up a bit, reworked them to fit into the Digimon franchise, and there you go.  Some of the more obvious similarities include mysterious men in black, characters named Alice, Juri, and Reika, and of course the Wired = the Digital World.

Fighting game anime, huh?  Well, there are several different anime incarnations of Street Fighter.  One of those might be to your liking.  Then there are the Fatal Fury movies.  I highly recommend the third one.

If you like a little comedy a lot of comedy with your fighting, then you might enjoy Ranma 1/2.

If you're a fan of big stompy robots, you could try Mobile Fighter G Gundam.  It's basically what Street Fighter would be like if the characters were Gundam pilots.

I commend FMA if for nothing else it had a cast of like 70 supporting characters, and not one of them was treated like an extra.  Characters from one-off episodes show up just about anytime and make a whole new plot arc.  There was a LOT-make that a SHITLOAD of storytelling going on, and the entire ensemble got a piece of it.  It's kind a shame they had to focus all the attention around the diminutive Luke Skywalker brat and his tin-can brother.

I'm just glad that most of the Military Staff made it through alive towards the end.

FMA even has an adorable little puppy in it. And that Lupin parody too. Has it become standard to parody Lupin the 3rd in anime? is it now one of several inevitable fanservice laws that must put in?

Blame FLCL, Spike's boots from Cowboy bebop and that episode of Samurai Jack That had Jigen stealing a Diamond from an ancient temple.

Oh, and Tomo's Fujiko cat-call.

I think Lupin is just one of those classic shows that it's assumed everyone recognizes.  It's like when American shows parody The Flintstones or Scooby Doo.

How about Spike and Jet themselves?  They're clearly modeled after Lupin and Jigen, both in appearance and personality.  It could be argued that Faye was similarly inspired by Fujiko.  Edward fans are lucky that we didn't get a proverb-spouting swordsman as the fourth character.

Well, Yoko Kanno, I'm told and have witnessed behaves just like Edward.  She's to perfect a charcter to turn down.  I guess when it came to sword swinging and proverb spouting they went with supercrazypsychovillain Vicious.

Twilight Suzuka is clearly superior to both Goemon and Vicious.  Who needs a real sword when a wooden one will do?

BUMP...

Thankye for all your recommendations, I'm going to check them out. I think I shall either check out Cowboy Bebop, Lucky Star, or Lovely Complex, but thats not the only reason I'm posting.

I finished watching Azumange Daioh. Absolutely brilliant. I loved it, so much so that I'm going to watch it again. Being at the same stage of life (more or less) as the characters made me really identify with everything going on.

Hey, has anyone seen Area 88? I was thinking about buying the box set when it becomes available here; as an anime fan and a MASSIVE aviation buff it seems like a nice meshing of two of my great loves.

A friend of mine has been trying to get me to watch that.

If you like anime about schoolgirls, you might also want to check out Super Gals! Kotobuki Ran.

I liked Azumanga myself.  I'm not usually into that kind of stuff... but it was fairly happy laid back story with what I'll accept as good character development.  Sometimes I imagine such happy times... even though they seemingly inexist.... :sigh:

Azumanga is teh awesome to watch. Nice, fun to watch and not too goddamn quirky.

I'm watching the 1st Hellsing Anime, what is the difference between that and the other version of Hellsing? I am considering watching the latter at this point.

If you guys plan on adding anything to Animetube by the way, don't use Google Video. It is utter shite.

Well, the First Hellsing has a cooler theme song, and adheres to the manga's plot closely for about half of it's episodes, then goes off on it's own tangent, as the manga was still in production, and they had run out of story to adapt.

Unfortunately, that tangent sucks. Really Bad.

Hellsing Ultimate starts the story again, and this time sticks to the manga. So, in other words, Nazis. Yay.

Ah, I wondered why the first Hellsings plot did a 360 degree from 'mysterious undead bio-tech' to 'OMG SUPER EUROPEAN ZOMBIE!!111'.

Thanks for the help Slacky.

Minor rant here:

Goddamit it, Anime Uploaders for Video streaming websites, stop it with the fucking Naruto and Bleach for all that is holy!

Have you ever considered that there might be fifty uploads of the same episode? please, stop it! Start uploading proper anime. Old school stuff you can't get DVDs of these days.

Seriously, It is terrible. I can't find not even one episode of Dirty Pair, Gunsmith Cats or the first Bubblegum Crisis episodes on several major video streaming sites. It is simply insanity.

I'm REALLY starting to hate Bleach and Naruto too.

I'm trying to upload Knights of Ramune to several Video Sites, but the damn file size and sound codec are giving me problems :/.

Spirited Away is a great film, since you liked that check out other films from Studio Ghibli, if you are buying now is a good time to get them as they are reduced at HMV if you buy them on line, not sure about the shop prices.

Not been watching so much anime as of late but I have been keeping up with my manga.

Firstly I will say definitly try to see more Ghibli, persoanl fave is My neighbour Totoro.

I have recently started ready Mahou Sensei Nagima, which is actually alot better than the anime in my opinion. Although it rely does seem the creator can only do one style, it is a little too similar to Love hina in points for comfort. Certainly worth a look though. And I must track down more Shonan Junai gumi, young Onizuka fun.

Princess Mononoke is another good one, quite different to Spirited Away, it has a great story an is pretty exciting, if you want something gentle with less decapitations then follow Wu's recommendation and watch My Neighbour Totoro and if you want to cry a lot the watch Grave of the Fireflies.

I see. Curse the silly fantasy buffs of the world. Why can't people just stick with Tolkien?

Irresponsible Captain Tylor!

Okay, who the hell is the guy in charge of promoting various anime titles? I want to yank his jawbone out for not telling me about ICT in the last 13 freaking years. I'm frustrated at the fact something this epic, this amusing and this heart wrenchingly awesome took forever for me to discover and watch fully to appreciate.

What is ICT? It is awesome. A young easy going street rat with a golden heart finally joins the Earth Space Navy simply because he thinks it would be easy living, he does it a few days too before war were declared with the amusingly 'alien' enemy. From that point on, we have an almost endless twenty six episode ride of hilarity.

I loved the entire cast of ICT. The frustrated and in desperate need for glory second in command, The Stern yet womanly Commander constantly trying to get things in order, the gung ho manly Marines, the cute twin teenage girls who want to fly, the Luke Skywalker Pilot wannabie with his odd Gynephobia, The Mysterious Nurse and the crazy Alchoholic Doctor. Even the 'baddies' are likeable, with the Mysterious Protector of the teenage Emperess.

The Soyakaze herself has the amusing Retro design of the anime industries favourite 2nd World War Aircraft Carrier.

Even the intro is quite short with a nice and catchy well done theme song.

Watch ICT. You will love it, truly one of the anime greats.

5/5 Nurdy Points.
