its not that bad...
quite frankly I'd rather watch all the awesome shows late at night, thats the only time I really have any time.
but yes there is too much self help and reality tv both australian made and from overseas.
I think an Australian network should try to make an australian prime time animation show, that would be a real first.

Seriously, who could exactly like Home and Away or Blue Heelers. The worst thing is that these shows both do really well here. Arghhh, it's so annoying.

With the addition of Australian Idol, DIY Rescue & someother crap on 9, three more are now on our screens. If the networks had it there way, every single slot would be filled with this type of stuff.

All I ever seem to see during Channel 7's primetime are crap reality/lifestyle shows about gardening, auctioning or travelling. Channel 9 seems to be no different either, although they do have Frasier and Micallef Tonight.
Channel 10 isn't bad - after all, they're constantly showing classic Simpsons episodes daily at 6:00pm, Rove Live, not to mention they have some great American sitcoms like Seinfeld and Everybody Loves Raymond. Still - no love to Channel 10 for constantly cramming piles of shit (e.g. Big Brother, Australian Idol, etc.) down our throats.
Pretty much everything I watch is comedy, so the above examples are a snippet of the good parts of Aussie TV. However, I'd say that the majority of the stuff shown here is complete crap that I wouldn't touch with a 40-foot stick in a decontamination room.
Every recent Aussie attempt at a comedic show has been poor, in my opinion. Comedy Inc. and Big Bite just seemed really immature & awful, and Skithouse was just plain lame. I recall that Channel 10 made an Aussie sitcom a few years ago called "Sit Down, Shut Up" that centered around the teachers in a high school. I thought it was a damn funny show, but then Channel 10 cancelled it after 6 or 7 episodes, which really pissed me off. There have been some great Aussie comedies in the past, such as Full Frontal - but the only way to see them now is on The Comedy Channel, and I don't have Foxtel. It's a shame really - as most aussies have great senses of humor. It's just that our country hasn't really seemed to produce any good, popular comedies since The Castle.
Damn, this post went longer than I first anticipated... Oh well, that's my 2 cents on everything you guys have talked about so far, anyway.

I don't think Australian TV is so bad. I have never been overseas so I don't really have anything to compare with, but I can't see other countries being any better. Channel 7 I see as more a 'family' station, Channel 9 a adults station and Channel 10 is for teenagers and young adults. SBS has a few gem programs and their coverage of soccer is fantastic. The ABC is good for young children and adults.
I am with Beamer, all I really watch is comdey. Channel 10 offers this with all the shows Beamer mentioned especially its flooding of old Simpsons episodes. Very nice. SBS is probably my second most watched station. During the european soccer season is may even be my first. It also provides me with the strange humour I like that wouldn't be found anywhere else, such as Quads, Pizza and Crank Yankers, as well as the odd light porn film in the middle of the day.
I don't really watch many Australian shows, but there really aren't that many. I don't watch any of those Aussie dramas, although I'm sure they are good for fans of that kind of show. Reality shows are bad, very bad, but teenagers who like following crowds watch them, so I guess that's good programming. Although I don't like them, people do. The gardening and real estate shows are not on my favourites list either, but I know my mum likes to watch them and so do many other people.
As a sport loving country we get our fair share of sport, and it is quite often that you will turn on the TV on the weekend and find sport on all channels. I love sport on TV, as you can sit down and watch pretty much anything. Even lawn bowls. It's good for a laugh.
There you go, my 2 cents.

Well, I'm not big on sports, so I can't really comment on the sports aired here - but I can say that looking at the TV guide, Aussie TV does manage to show a helluva lot of sport without disrupting other shows. So most sport lovers do seem to get what they want TV-wise here, and I don't really care, just as long as it doesn't do anything to the shows I usually watch. All I really see on SBS is foreign shows, so I don't have anything good to say there - but they do show South Park, which is terrific. I love the whole off-beat parody of life South Park offers with some great gags and characters that really do make an impact. It manages to both insult your inteligence and make a good point at the same time, which is what makes it so watchable. If there are any South Park haters here, I URGE you to watch episode 615: The Biggest Douche In The Universe. If it doesn't give you a laugh or make you think, then you officially have no sense of humor, or brain for that matter. Sorry, I really did go off-topic then. Anyway, SBS to cater well for those with that certain sense of humor displayed in the shows Alex listed above (although I personally dislike Pizza). Also, kudos to SBS for their constant airing of light porn movies! Well, it's mainly foreign movies, but the majority contain craploads of nudity, so hurrah! I've stated my opinion on every channel now, except for ABC - which I don't really have an opinion on considering I rarely watch it. ABC do have some pretty funny Aussie variety-ish shows though, which they really need to put on at better times. That's all I can think of saying. Alright, I'm gonna quit typing and click the "submit" button now, my fingers are sore and covered in blood.

I have further proof that Aussie television isn't so bad. We hardly have any censorship laws. Many places, such as America, can't have any swearing on TV, even on like at 8:30. I don't know what the rules are in Australia regarding this, but there certainly is swearing.
On weekend mornings we get our music video shows, exactly what you want to watch on these mornings. And the reality cramming on channel 10 would happen everywhere. It is annoying though... grrr. Big Brother finished on Monday, now bloody Australian Idol starts tomorrow. Only one more day of freedom.
Of course if you don't like what is on TV, you can always go my way out. DVD's. With my Futurama seasons 1 + 2, Family Guy 1 +2 and numerous movies and music DVD's, there is always something I can put on. Such as now, U2 Live in Boston!

Well, Aussie Dude, although your grammar is just terrible - you are right about The Glass House. That's an excellent show, and it really deserves a better timeslot.
I have noticed that censorship thing though. We get away with so much on free-to-air TV, and the yanks can really only get away with that kinda stuff on cable. Back in 2001, South Park managed to get "shit" unbeeped for one episode (in the US, it's aired on basic cable, so they normally have to beep out all heavy swearing). They managed to utter that word around about 162 times in 20 minutes, just because they could. That episode was really controversial over there - it got mentioned all over the USA media, numerous religious groups tried to ban it, and so many complaints were made. It was probably the #1 most notorious South Park episode of 2001 in America.
When it aired here, though - pretty much the only people who talked about it were fans, and nobody made a huge fuss about it - it was basically "Hey, did you see that 'shit' episode of South Park last night?"
Sorry for going on about South Park again - it was the only example about the difference of country censorship I could think of.
