I don't know if this is real or just some hilarious in-joke, but I thought I saw CGEF mention that if Fox's new prime time series wasn't successful, they'd replace it with 'a British Japanese-style betting show called Banzai'. Is it true?
Not that I could see it if it was on, but here in Britain Banzai always gets a post-9pm timeslot, and doesn't seem very primetime-friendly.

According to the FOX website, it's currently scheduled for the 8:30 - 9:00 slot over the summer (or at least July 13th). At the time mArc wrote that entry, it looked like Banzai would be replacing it. I think Oliver Beene has the "honour" of the deathslot instead now, though.

Hmm, interesting. If you're into that kind of thing.
Banzai usually contains nudity or swearing - what do you reckon Fox would do about that (if it was on at 8.30)? Edit out the whole segment? Bleep and blur it out, making the show nearly unwatchable? Or what?

Drat. I saw the thread title and thought they'd picked up a Buckaroo Banzai series...

Actually, I think they've ordered a season specifically for the US market.

That's a bit disappointing.  I've seen this show before, when CityTV in Toronto showed several episodes over the course New Years Eve in 2001.  I rather liked the obscure (and not so obscure) British celebrity appearances.

In the beginning the Universe was created.  This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

i saw an advert for Banzai. Wow. Talk about an insult to my intelligence. Like i really wanna bet on how long it takes two midgets to climb a basketball player. It's like Jackass with even LESS class. And that's what their replacing Futurama with. wow.

You mean regular people? Hehe, that was a joke taken from SNL.

And this IS what Fox will be replacing that timeslot with. But 8:30 is not Futurama's timeslot. Something must be moved around to fill in the 7:00 slot.

If you're all criticising a brand-new US version that's trying to be a Jackass rip-off, then fine. But I think the Channel 4 UK one's pretty funny.
And you're not really meant to bet! It's a joke, see?

Jeremy, a crowded elevator smells different to a midget.

Banzai was great on C4, I don't remember a lot of nudity though.  frown

I saw a promo spot for Banzai on fox and it looks stupid.

I thought Jackass was stupid but funny, but after a few episodes, I began to think it wasn't funny anymore...

I'm tired of Jackass so I don't think I'll watch Banzai.

Ok, maybe not alot, but they didn't stay away from it. Banzai is ok, i watch it when it's on, but i think Futurama is better then it.

There is a lot of nudity on UK Banzai, of both the male and female flavours (especially in the later series).

And it's unfair to compare Jackass to Banzai in such a way. Both shows are completely stylistically different and the 'stunts' are done for different purposes in each.

So this is going to be a US remake? That'll suck.
The UK version is pretty funny- the Jackass comparisons are unfair.

Hey, I think it is the UK version!

From the Fox site:
BANZAI, the hilarious spoof Japanese interactive entertainment show, invites viewers to predict the outcome of various funny and bizarre betting scenarios. Sample scenarios include “Mr. Shakehands Man” (How long can he shake a celebrity’s hand before he/she pulls away?), and “The Michael Jackson’s’ Reverse Race Rendezvous” (Which Michael Jackson impersonator can moonwalk the fastest, on an ice rink?). Let’s not forget “Lady One Question,” who interviews unsuspecting celebrities in her own unique way. They are situations you would never expect to encounter, and you won’t be able to take your eyes off of. Viewers at home can wager with friends and family to see who can best predict the comedic, outrageous and very unpredictable outcomes. BANZAI is from Radar and producers TIM BREADIN and GARY MONAGHAN.

Wow, if it really is the UK version, then Fox has now reached another new low.  Now they're so cheap that they're not even making their own shows, but syndicating them from other countries.  And no, Fox hasn't started showing Banzai here yet.  Thank goodness.

You're being a little unfair. If it's not the british version, people say "Fox is ruining a great british show...why can't they just show the original episodes?". If it IS the british version, then people say "they can't even make a new show? What a bunch of stupid cheapskates!".

Still...british or not, funny or not, the commercials for Bonzai are really annoying, and I don't plan on watching it.

I would see it for yuks, but actually Banzai doesn't look as bad when compared to the other reality TV stuff. From what I see in the commercials, the show seems to have a certain charm and a quirky edge.

Damn, I wish I was back in Toronto.  Why is it that everything here has to be Americanized, yet we Canadians have no problem at all watching British programming just as it was intended?  Actually, I do have a theory about that, but I will keep it to myself to avoid needlessly causing insult.

a lot of the in jokes on banzai will be lost on americans. They have has been actors and tv presenters do ridiculous things in perfect silence and have two crazy japanese voice over artists screaming alongs. the first season was inspired but after that it got samey. I advise watching because its very funny at first.

Just found this thread.  Am I alone in thinking Banzai to be ever so slightly xenophobic?

As for the non-nekkid US version, you must remember that Helen Lovejoy and Maude Flanders are based on a sizeable and extremely vocal group of fundamentalists who still fight against teaching that the earth is over 8,000 years old (or some such number).  Evidently the least little nudity will send them on a rampage of rape and debauchery.  I guess that's their problem, anyway.  Never had that effect on me, though.

Good God. Bonzi (or however the hell you spell it) came on the other night. During the opening credits, I thought it was a joke but then it got to the title screen. Luckily I changed the channel before the main part of the show started.

Fry: They sure hate Dr. Zoidberg.
Bender: Posers. I was hatin Zoidberg before it was cool.

I never heard Banzai get complaints for racism in Britain. Although our Japanese population is small, Japanese people wouldn't have been the only ones to complain if it was racist - and it's lasted for 3 years.

It's too surreal for Americans, I suppose. Plus, Fox can't do anything right in Futurama fans' eyes - they would hate whatever replaced it.
I'm not saying that's the sole reason for this dislike of it, but it seems like a significant part of it.

Still, what did you think they going to replace Futurama with? World's Shittiest Reality Show II?

Man, I LOVED that show. How can the quirky charm of which French thielf can steal a car first, the one with his face obscured by a picture of Craig David or the other guy.

Personally I think it's totally different to Jackass. Jackass clearly set out to shock and appeal to the brain-dead market. Banzai does appeal to the same brain-dead market, but it doesn't set out to shock so much as entertain with the ridiculous stunts trhey pull, which rather than harm anyone just are surreal. I guess you have to appreciate surreal humour, something I'm a big fan of.

It won't replace Futurama (is it just me or do Futurama fans hate EVERYTHING that's not Futurama? *awaits the bashing*), but it's a lot better than the latest Big Bother, Survivor, or When Mice Go Bad VII

If they're going the Banzai route, it might actually be sort of funny if they just got a real show from Japan instead of a spoof dumbed down to be on the lowest common denominator network. Banzai makes me as mad as previews for that retarded "Grind" movie.

I reckon it's much better if it is the original (UK) version.  Whether it's good or bad, they shouildn't mess with it, as a US remake would almost certainly be worse.

I love Banzai!

I agree with Archie2K, it's totally different than Jackass.
Jackass is inheritantly twisted and cruel, Banzai is silly and whatnot but it's also incredibly funny.
