You know what's worth buying? Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust. That and Hellsing. The only problem I have with Hellsing is that its animation died halfway through. Otherwise, go vampiric anime!

Hasn't Hellsing got cockney accents?

Well, I've only seen Hellsing subtitled, so I wouldn't know. On a related note, I hope I hear something about Hellsing, Season 2. If it's even in production...

Dubbed, yeah... but most of the voice actors in it are authentically British. Still, it beats British people talking in Japanese. I can't stand the subbed version of it.

I heard something about another season too, but it's only a rumor. I think the creator of the show and the author had some discrepancies. If anyone's read the manga, you know what I mean.

Integral and Alucard would have interesting babies. :-p

@ Nagrub. If your going to buy the DVDs then I would go for Ghost in the Shell. I have not seen it but Matsamune Shirow is a god.
Indeed, although he did'nt direct the ghost in the shell film, it was asmazing(not saying he was'nt curcially envolved in it-wich he was) Apple seed was really good too. but i love his manga the most, the ghost in the shell maga is really really ...really good. I need to get the appleseed mangas and interon depot me thinks!
speaking of ghost in the shell. You know that scene where kusanagi is fighting the 'puppet' in the water with the optic camo, just how cool was that! beautiful animation. tres cool.

so yeah, i ordered eps 1-26 of bebop and eps 1-26 of stand alone complex. with postage to the uk i think it came to about $95. I'l tell ya when it gets here.

The story line goes into the realms of insanity though and its a bit hard to follow iin bits. I love the way its written, the way shirow thinks about everything in such detail. The manga is filled with notes explaining how things work and why they are there etc... for example 'This is not a light fixture but a special device that ensures the micromachines are deposited uniformly.'

I love FLCL. It's probably my second favorite series of all time (behind Evangelion. I'm such a GAINAX fanboy). It's definitely one of the more out-there series, and definitely worth checking out. The only problem is that the DVDs here are insanely priced, like $29.99 for one disc. And they wonder why people DL anime episodes.

Yeah, everyone seems to like FLCL.  We even have a FLCL thread.

Apparently we can have a seperate thread for FLCL, but not one for InuYasha.

Exactly.  FLCL is only six episodes long, and it gets its own thread.  InuYasha has over 140 episodes, and it's still going.  Even if you've only seen the first 52 episodes shown on Cartoon Network, that's still a lot more episodes than FLCL or Cowboy Bebop, which also has its own thread.

I'm willing to follow whatever arbitrary rules the mods have about what threads we can and can't have, but it would be nice if there was some rhyme or reason behind it.

Agreed.  It's a shame that Cartoon Network only plays the ending theme music, and not the opening theme music as well.  I guess they feel that they need that time for their inane commercial bumper cards.

Y'know Nurdbot, considering how much you complain about the lack of Japanese culture in anime, I'm surprised that you don't like InuYasha.  If you ignore the time-travel, magic, and demons, the setting is a fairly accurate portrayal of the warring states period.  A lot of the demons and such are inspired by Japanese folklore and mythology as well.

So, let me get this straight, Nurdy.

You watch anime that has little to no Japanese cultural references, and you complain that it's "too American" for you.  Then, when something with an authentic Japanese flavor comes along, you don't like that either.

NIGHTWALKER!  That's my fave vampire anime.  Riho Yamazaki is the bomb. animation may be a bit choppy, but I totally dig the characters.  And hey, the last time there was a gay villian I could actually root for was Ninja Scroll, Cain you've killed my Homophobia, go [kick] some ass.

Love Hina

Now admitidly I have nto seen the specails and the OVA so I do not know how this really ends yet but as I a sereis I feel I a can pass judgement.

Well if you can see the pic I found, then you may be wondering why I choose such a picture. Well because I think it sums up the series pretty well. One big fan service.

Ok on the series. Well it's quite good but I did feel like it was borrowing alot of stuff from other anime. To me it seemed like they took the girls from Tenchi and mixed around with their personalities and put an Ed like character in just for good measure. Apart from that little niggle i have, the characterisation is quite good. Although as I will say latter I felt that some episodes added nothing.

Now before I get to the story lets' stay with the aethstetics. Like most modern anime, the animation is quite crisp and it uses vibrant colours. All in all it looks very pretty, oh and they love to put mist everywhere.

Now as for the story. Well it your usual, a helpless student ends up sharing a house with a buch of attractive women and they each start falling for him in some way. Of course this is hardly an orginal idea but it is done fairly well so it's alright. The major problem I had was that many of the episdoes seemd to add next to nothing in terms of plot or characterisation. When they did do episodes with plot and characteristion it works really well. I definitly felt that they could of done without some of the episodes and extended the ending episodes with a few mpre episodes, which could of built on some of the themes that were sneaking in.

One thing that did strike me (or didn't while I was watching) was the music. While there is some great anime music out there, this si not the place to find it. The score for the whole piece is quite weak.

I realise that most of this review seems quite negative but I did like Love Hina. It is jsut I am aware that it could of been so much more than it let itself be. It is a fun little series and if you get the chance then I recomend you watch it.

I will give this a respectible B

Don't get high hopes though. The Bebop set is great, but the subtitling on the SAC needs reworking. At least they both have plenty of extras. Well, you can't expect much from bootlegs anyway.

You're right about the bebop set. I hav'nt really noticed any problems with them.  I've noticed a few problems in the stand alone complex subtitles though(right again), they are somtimes ludacrously fast and theres a few spelling mistakes. They are done so that if one characters dialogue goes onto the next line, it will wait till another character speaks. This can have some problems as somtimes there can be a few seconds till the next person speaks so you are left with a unfinished sentence. This impacts if its a humourous line. Or if it changes shot ofcourse.

how'd you know about em, do ya have em? And i knew they wre a bit dodgy, i mean the whole series for $30. So are they illegal, the site's selling illegal goods?

You're talking to an asian. Of course I have bootlegs.  :p Actually, I would have gotten R1 DVDs if not for my lack of credit cards (or money for that matter) and the lack of quality original import anime.

Anyway, here are tips on how to detect bootleg anime externally.
- cost, obviously. (>30% cheaper than originals)
- more than 5 eps per disc.
- multi region encoding.
- company name. (Anime, Anime Int, Manga, FX, etc)
That's all I can think of right now.

My friend got $500 in bootlegs last year when he was in Hong Kong. He was studying abroad. Uh huh, yeah, that was it.

Another way to tell if the videos are bootleg. The set is in a gate-fold box (like FOX's 24 season 1 collection). Chinese subtitles are also a given.

I regret buying two bootleg discs of Naruto. I had them fansubbed, but I wanted to see them on TV. For starters the menu was all in Chinese and that made things a bit confusing. And I learned that fansubs are better because they're done by people that can actually SPEAK English, not done on some computer text-translator. Fansubbers also put footnotes on Japanese language to make the show easier to understand.

Evan, if you're such a Gainax fanboy, do you have the DVD for Abenobashi? The second one's coming out soon, and I have the first one. Kudos to Musca for telling me about this great series. If you like stuff like Excel Saga, this one's even funnier.

There's so many anime parodies in it (Evangelion, Gundam) it's not even funny. The dubs are...well interesting. All the main characters have this Souther Texas accent. It had to be done to compensate for the loss of the Osaka accent, apparently.
