Time fora review, me thinks

Zone of the Enders: Dolores, I

First a few preliminaries.
Zone of the Enders is a game produced by Konami (the same guys who did Metal Gear Solid) and take place quite a few years in the future. Now you don't need to play the game to understand the series but it does help. They also produced an OVA called Zone of the Enders: Idalo, now you really should see this first since it has alot to do with this series. Now as far as I can tell this takes place 5 years after the OVA and a few years after the game. Well on with the review.

Firstly, I'm warey of most game to series (game to any other media in fact), especially after seeing quite a few episodes of Final Fantasy Unlimited. I was pleasently surprised by this series as it keeps many of the things that made the game good.

The animation is quite good and the 3D elements are used spareingly, for which I am grateful. The music is very nice indeed, which is no surprise to me after playing the game. The story is alright, it does have some very high points but it also has some low points. I must admit it took me a while to get into it but it was worth it.

Probably the worst aspect of the series is the dubbing. Some of the voices really grated but considering the style of character they were used for, it was not all bad.

Now as a mech anime I will not say this is next Evangelion but it is a good series. As an extension of a game I would say it is one of the better ones (I still have .hack//sign to watch). If you liked the game then this is a must. If your not and you have some time, I'd say give it a go.

You know I thought I had written one some time ago but apprently not.
Frankly a detailed review is not nessary since it is a brillant film. One of the best out there in fact. Watch it and make your own opinion.
I strongly recomend this film to anyone not just anime fans and if it does not really stir your emotions then you are dead on the inside.

I was bored tonight and some channel played like 8 episodes of that Inuyasha thing in a row. It was alright, wouldn't go out of my way to watch it (not that into anime), but I'll probably watch it again sometime down the road.

Inuyasha's alright at first, but I hate how eventually it starts putting in so much filler.

I heard GTO is funny as hell. But how much fanservice does it have? I'm hesitant to buy it because my brother is 10 years younger.

Fanservice?

GTO is the shit, and if you can't get the anime, the manga is just as good. Is it just me, or does Onizuka look like Eminem? :-p

Inuyasha...well... it's like your classic anime with the classic plotline, classic heroes and villains, classic romance, and cheesy humor. Everything is pretty much laid out for the viewer.

It isn't, but it's just not something I like. I used to be a fanatic, I mean, I have Kikyo's outfit; but its humor just seems really childish.

Neoteric concepts in anime never cease to amuse me: Hellsing or FLCL, for instance.

hey kids, i've suddenly got a load of money lying around.. i really really really wanna get my hands on a box set of bebop. region 2,... i have a hugely amazing cinema set up, but the dvd is'nt multi region... if i even mentioned getting a multi region dvd to my step dad... he'd go ballistic, seeing as he spent so much on the system... anyway! i really wanna get the full noir series and bebop.. then i could die happy, i've allready got the first 4 noir dvd's on region 2 and i dont really wanna mix it with region 1 dvd's it'd just be a pain. SO, anime-peelers i formally request your help, where can i fine bebop region 2- as a box set, obviously as cheep as possible... annnnd, if any of you know a really cheap region free dvd player, then i can install it in my room and watch inport anime! HUZZAH!
although... i'm not sure, but is'nt japan on region 2 aswell? meaning i could just get the import sets, and use subtitles(usually superior to the dub anyway)
thanks for any help ,'animpeers'.

Want to get this out of my system

Outlaw Star:  It's cool.

I liked the show because in addition to some very Cliche type characters they threw in alot of extra characters that added an element of flavor that's hard to find in anime.  I loved the scenes of Flaming perfection with Fred Lowe, the pondering absurdities of Gwen Kahn and Aisia's over-the-top Kitty-cat behavior.  You can scream Cowboy Bebop 'till the cows come home, I'll admit it's supperior in severa aspects, but I loved the interaction of Outlaw Stars recurring cast.  Even Ronnie McDougal, though seemingly deeply disturbed showed moments that made you scratch your head and wonder did Melfina really like him?  Intimidating?  Yes.  Creepy?  Yes.  Still, it did seem like the android girl had some kind of weakspot for him.

So anyway, Outlaw star is A.O.K. by me.

Outlaw star was ok but not great in my humble opinon. Anyway I watched qute a few of this series but now I have finished it I will give it a full review.

Revalutionary Girl Utena

Now this is one strnage anime. Strange but fairly good. To be onest I like strange anime, such as FLCL but the weirness in this series sometimes seems out of place. Strange things can be happening in apparently serious sceens. This series also has quite a few things that could offend some people (well middle America really). The main character Utena wishs to be a prince (she the girls with pink hair by the way) which is odd but not quite as out there as some of the things in the show. Towards the end of the series these become more prononced, these thing include incest, homosexuality both male and female. Now this does not bother me but I do think some people may be offneded by this.

Now this series comes from the creators of Salor Moon, so youm cna expect pleantly of costume transformations (which there are an ample amount). Even the character designs hark to some of the Salor moon designs. Now I was kinda annoyed that many of the charater looked the same but got over it. The genral design of the backgrounds and settings are quite interesting and look like they spent quite abit of time on them. Problem is with so much time speant on the backgrounds that the animation suffered.

The easiest thing to say about Utena is repetition. Many things are repeated throughout the series especially animation, which could be very annoying at times. Thouugh towards the end I began to see this repeatition was thematic and kinda made sense.

The story is confusing at points and some times some episodes seem to have nothing to do with anything. That said it got very good towards the end.

All in all quite a good series but not for everyone.
B

Utena the movie aka The adolecence of Utena.

First things first. This is not a continuation of the series or evena prequal. It is a stand alone film, which retells the stiry although slightly diffenrently (much like the Escaflowne movie). Some ofthe characters are diffent indeed (For example in this Utena and Tojga were young lovers but in the series Utena disliked hime alot).

As far as I could tell this flm is quite symbolic and I probabaly missed alot, in fact there are quite a few things that seemed not to make sense.

The settings and backgrounds are far more impressive than the series. The character designs have also been tweaked for the better. The whole thing has a sort of arty feel to it, which I liked. One thing I thought was odd about how they showed the characters was when they were nude. In series they usually show the character as barbies (ie no definition) and make them anatomically correct in the movies but this was not the case, which looked quite odd at points.

Like the series, this has some themes that could be considered offensive (I just wishpeople were more open minded). So of the ones from the series have been toned down while others have been increased. For one Anthe's advances on people are much greater (in the series she was very passive) especailly towards Utena. If you are open minded then you will not have a problem with this.

As for the plot. Well like the series it is quite odd. Problem is (as was the problem with the Escaflowne the movie) is that it is difficult to condense a full series into an hour and a half movie. Alot from the series is lost (mostly the characterisations) alos soem characters are pushed into the background (Chu Chu only really makes a chameo apperances). Otherwise it is a fairly complicated plot to describe here.

One of the main problems I had with the movie was the last few sceens. They seemd to amke not sense and adid not seem to be necessary

Ah well. Still a fairly interesting movie. If you get the chace watch it.

I read an interview of Kunihiko Ikuhara once, and apparently that ending was the whole reason that he wanted to make the movie.
