Yeah, sort of like Futurama, Invader Zim was one of those shows that the network it was on (Nickolodeon) didn't really know what to do with it.  It had some of the most insane storylines, with the pigs to change history, organ replacement, a Santabot(A Giant Santabot),  and Gir, that it was funny in a kinetic, non-stop gag, strange sense of humor show.  As such, most little kids didn't really get all of the gags, which is doom on you if you are a Nick show.  I've always wanted to meet Mr. Vasquez, as I think that IZ would do well on a network where they could let more of the adult humor available to the plot of the show.  Here's hoping that they release the current episodes and maybe those that were'nt  shown on dvd, with commentaries and everything. Go Tallest!

P.S. I dooon't knooow!  Hee hee hee!

When was this? Wasnt it cancelled and then recomissioned?
Either way zim was sorta genius yet infantile at the same time. Not the same as futurama, It was futurama for kids. It was adult humour, very complicated. Yet it was basically for kids. It is (or was) not mass orientated, and that as we all know is the Uforgivable sin.

Invader Zim was genious in all shapes and forms. Loved Kevin McDonald as one of the tallest (I'm pretty sure it was red). Did anybody hear about the episode that was cut out because of 9/11. It was called "Walk for your Lives". Zim invents some sort of chamber (or something to that effect) where everything put into it is slowed down and stays slow when removed. A bomb goes off in it and the explosion slowly moves through NY City. Dib tries to stop it while people panic. Once people figure out how slow the bomb is moving they just keep on with their daily lives. In the end something happens the bomb goes back to normal speed and New York is basically destroyed. I know some websites that let you     ;)  this episode. The "D" word which I cannot speak of.

good, i am glad.....i already knew that it was canceled though....

The reason why it was canceled is because it just wasnt a "children" show.......it would scare me if i was a kid......you have to agree the plot is so bazarre.............cn will probably buy the rights to the show....i just have a huge feeling it will....though it really does not deserve to be shown on tv because it is the worst show ever.......

I sort of agree with you on that Kryten. But the reason it's overrated is the fact that it's the first show on Nick really pushes the envelope since Ren & Stimpy. Plus, Vasquez already had lots of fans from his comics who were loyal enough to tune in even though most of them hate Nickelodeon (like me). Invader Zim took little kid's cartoons and twisted them so they were adult and kid-like at the time. Also IZ was one of the few shows that didn't change anything because of 9/11. The show still maintained it's "Love the Villian Who Wants to Take Over Earth Starting with NY" premise (Though Nick forced it to put away certain episodes). It's not spineless like some other shows which just showed this patriotic crap for like 3 months after it happened. In fact IZ is one spine-packed show.

Johnny the Homicidal Maniac, the comic that Vasquez became famous for. It is really twisted and deep into Parent Advisory territory. Starts out like a normal insane murdering person story then gets very interesting and deep. All of his stories take place in the same twisted universe, there are two other series, Squee and I feal sick. Both have characters that have met Johnny. Squee actually is much closer to Zim, and has a couple characters that overlap. I Feal Sick is a really cool two issue series that is my favorite of his work. It is about what an artist goes through in life.

there was a JTHM thread?
i too am a big fan of Mr. Vasquez works. I loved the show Invader Zim, and all the Comics. I think everything that Mr. Vasquez has done is brilliant, even the filler bunny comic and the bad art collection. I signed the petition to get Invader Zim to stay on air, even though i dont have cable and cant even really watch it. so sad..
I feel Sick is my favorite comic next to issue # 6 of JTHM.

Good news! Every aired episode of Invader Zim (including some that didn't air in the US because of 9/11) have come out on DVD! HURRAH! Here's a link to the site  http://www.tooncollections.com/?referrer=adwords_camp1ad1

It's not official but it is supported by AOL and it has been given good reviews by DVD magazines. It's commercial free but the nick logo is still in the corner of the screen. I'm gonna buy it because Nick has refused to make the IZ DVD they said was a possiblity.

It was a pretty good show.  I loved Gir!  He was soooo funny!  It was a funny show in a disgusting way.  It made the city and its people look disgusting, but maybe some of that is true.  And the animation was excellent.  I wouldn't care if it got perminately cancelled or it came back.

I agree. That was one of the reasons Zim was cancelled. Many people believe that Invader Zim takes place in New York City (which ,as said in interviews, it does) and after 9/11 Nickelodeon asked Vasquez if he could make people in New York seem a bit nicer and even asked him if he could "clean the city up a little". He was disgusted and continued making NYC the way he felt it really was. He would know because he has been to New York for long periods of time and has had bad experiences. He draws things the way they really are on the inside instead of glorifying it just because something bad happened. Nickelodeon has no appreciation for freedom of speech. They just want to make certain people happy.

God. Invader Zim. I love that show.

I have this sweet IZ t-shirt that people try and buy off my back when I wear it. The shirts says ZIM on the front and has a very big picture of him on the back. People come up and ask what is ZIM and I just turn around, I love that shirt.

The series is brilliant and I was horrified when it was cancelled. I have almost every episode (not the Christmas one) and they are pretty well all great. I read above that there will be no official DVD's? Thats a real shame. I don't know if I will buy the other DVD's I've seen ads for.

A lot of older people like that show, I bet not one kid younger than 10 liked it.  I see many Zim shirts, and mostly adults are wearing them.  I've even seen Billy from Good Charlotte wearing a Zim shirt like the one you said, Chump,  in a music video.  It really was a great show, I wish they made more.  Animation was great and it was really funny in a disgusting way.

I'd say the show was just not aimed at the right audience. Nick was definatley not its place. Perhaps, we will see reruns on adult swim or something.

No, NibblerJr, I'm just not paying attention to you.  Oh, wait, same thing.  Anyway, MOST kids under 10 probably didn't like it too much.

I don't think Adult Swim would be best, maybe it should be shown just as a regular show.  I think it's in the same league as Courage, maybe.  Nick still runs reruns from time to time.

I dont really know how it would fit in with thier daily 5 hour marathon of scooby doo *gag*.

You know, a show that I always thought was great but never got put in the right time slot, Rocko's Modern life. That show really rocked.

It's Irken NibblerJr (I downloaded the Irken language font). I have an IZ shirt that has Gir saying something like "I'm doing the monkey dance!" with a picture of Zim looking very frustrated with GIR dancing around him.

(Gets his thread-revivin' gloves ready)

Has anyone seen the episode "Hobo 13"? I just saw it recently on my DVD and R. Lee Ermy (known best as the drill sargent in Full Metal Jacket and host of Mail Call) guest-stars as a...drill sargent. The Tallest send Zim to a planet where hopefully he will be killed during training. Ermy plays a huge alien militia trainer. You gotta love the battle between Zim, Ermy, and Invader Skoodge at the end.

I only saw a few episodes of it (you don't know it, but I, Asylum, cannot keep track of time as I firmly believes it is an illusion) and it looked like a wonderful, if dark, cartoon. But dark is good.

So that's why they cancelled it!? The audience Nickelodeon is oriented on probably didn't even UNDERSTAND 9/11! Why don't they just.. not show the NY exploding episode... in NY only?

First off, ZIM is my third favorite cartoon, after Simpsons and Futurama of course. And ZIM does kick major ass, as well as Jhonen and his other twisted creations, mainly JTHM and Squee! And they should come out with a DVD, that'd be sweet. And Tardom, there was talks about a TV movie, I forgot the title, in which Dib became ambassador to Meekrob and wages war on the Irken empire, but nothing but that short thought was ever made of it.

Actually, I heard Jhonen Vasquez had a rough draft of the script for the made-for-tv movie (which was titled, "Invader Dib" ), but I doubt it'll ever be seen. I don't think any of Season two's episodes have been seen on tv (I have "Backseat Drivers From the Stars" on an illegitimate yet very well-done DVD). Other episodes I wish I could've seen:
1. "Zim Eats Waffles"
2. "The Return of Keef"
3. "Simon Says Doom"
