Meh.  There weren't any Lord of the Rings movies last year, and I can't pretend to actually care that much about any of these other movies.

Except that "Polar Express" took the book and used it as a shrapnel target...

Now, I knew it wasn't gonna happen, but I would have really liked to have seen Uma Thurman get nominated for "Kill Bill 2." I don't care that it wasn't your standard Oscar fare movie, she still gave the BEST performance out of all the movies that came out in 2004.

RE Animated Film Oscar: What would be nice would be if they got rid of the Oscar and put the animated films back in with the Best Picture group. Last time I checked animated films still counted as pictures.

because it wasn't exactly the type of movie normally considered Oscar Material, that's why. Which is a shame, really. "Kill Bill 2" was the best movie of 2004, HANDS DOWN.

Meh.  I haven't seen most of those movies (for once) and many of them I don't really care to see. "Sideways" got a great review from my friend, who's usually right about that sort of thing, but nothing else jumps out at me.  I do hope Kate Winslet wins for "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind."  That, and "Super Size Me," are the only two I'm rooting for.

Dicaprio hasn't been nodded in a while, and his first nod was back in "What's eating gilbert grape?"    In this film he co-starred with Johnny Depp who was passed over for his performance.  Since that time, Depp has gotten nodded, but agian denied.

What I'm getting at here is I haven't seen any movies this past year, so I don't really give a damn.

I liked these nominees. I was glad to see the two nominations for Motorcycle Diaries, the two nominations for Eternal Sunshine, and the screenplay nomination for Before Sunset. I was also quite surprised with the Best Director nomination for Mike Lleigh and the Best Actor nomination for Eastwood.

Anyways, I hope that this will be Scorsese's year finally.

I'm actually considering seeing Dreamgirls. Hmm. I have paid to see musicals before... probably the only PEELer to see De-Lovely.

That's said, I've not seen (m)any of these movies nominated. Two or three years ago, I went all the time. Hmm. There are a few out I might still see... perhaps Venus or The Last King of Scotland. Those look interesting.

And maybe Volver. Until I saw that site I had no idea what it was about, but I know Penelope Cruz looks ridiculously gorgeous on the posters for the film.

One last bit: That dude from Infamous - Toby Jones - should have been nominated. I don't care if Philip Seymour Hoffman won for playing the same guy last year.

That's true, and he never will. That's why they gave him a Honorary Academy Award for Lifetime achievement.     :p

IIRC he was about to refuse it, saying that he rather want to win one. He was then told that he should not act like an idiot, because that would be his last chance to get one.

Thus I say he won win this year either (it's his eight nomination after all), because that would make the Academy and its members look bad.     ;)

Also, I demands lots of Oscars for Pan's Labyrinth, a few for Letters from Iwo Jima and one for Helen Mirren, Cate Blanchett, Forrest Whitaker, Mark Wahlberg.

And maybe one for Martin Scorsese.  :D

Little Miss Sunshine was a cute little film, but nominated for an Oscar? Naaaaaaaah. I'd feel good about The Departed's chances of winning if Babel wasn't nominated.

Will Smith was good in Pursuit of Happyness. I wasn't amazed by Leo in Blood Diamond, but I believed him as a South African, so I guess that warrants a nomination. I preferred him in The Departed, though. And The Fountain should have been nominated for music. Too bad no one saw it.

I didn't know until recently that The Last King of Scotland was about Idi Amin.   :(

Ha. Click is nominated for an Oscar? Yeah, it's only for Makeup, but still.

I saw The Fountain. I hardly noticed the music at all. Well, kind of near the end I did because it spazzed all out. Aside from that little freak-out, the music (played by the Kronos Quartet and some Mogwai, yes?) wasn't much to get a stiffy about.

I liked what Clint Mansell did with the Kronos Quartet for Requiem For A Dream, though. Man, that kicked some arse.

I love the spazzed out part. It's "Death is the Road to awe" in case you wanna download it, sugar.
Requiem's music is wicked awesome too.
I just heart Clint Mansell.

Out of the ones nominated, I saw the Departed, and Little Miss Sunshine. They're both good, but I think Little Miss Sunshine was a slightly better when viewed as a movie, while the Departed was  better when viewed as a film. Yes, there is a difference.

For example, Star Wars is a movie, while Citizen Kane is more of a film. A movie has more entertainment value while a film is more about art and directing, not to say that is necessarily lacks entertainment value.

That being said, the Oscars should be more about artistic achievement, so I would go with the Departed over Little Miss Sunshine. I have to see some of the other ones before I throw my stock behind any particular film, though.

Also, how is Borat! an adapted screenplay exactly?

The ones I like out of the bunch so far is The Departed and Babel.  Both movies are great and I'll be happy with whichever one is nominated.   Thank heavens the writing team of Borat got nominated!  That movie rocked!

Well, it wasn't an original character. Adapted from television counts, too.

Anyway, Jer... uh, BirthdayClown, I posted a few things I'm thinking about seeing, but what would you recommend? I trust you more than some of these other dorks.

Also, how is Click nominated for makeup? Doesn't that usually go to period pics?

I actually haven't seen any of the movies you mentioned. I have no interest in seeing Dreamgirls.     :p Though I'd much rather see it than have to sit through that damn Norbit trailer again. And people seem to love it... Oh my, how they laugh. Ugh.
I do want to see Volver and The Last King of Scotland. I'll probably sneak in to see The Last King after I see Smokin' Aces.
I dunno where you live, but your theaters should be bringing back some of the Oscar nominees. I don't think you can go wrong with any of them.
As far as movies that are still out that I've seen and liked: Apocalypto and The Pursuit of Happyness are the only ones I can think of.

Movies that I haven't seen, but would recommend anyway  :p: Children of Men, Curse of the Golden Flower and Pan's Labyrinth

I live near Philly. I'll probably be able to see everything. Also, I'm not really going to see Dreamgirls. Well, maybe.

I'll probably see either Volver, Venus, or Last King of Scotland tomorrow... Ms. Masty is probably going out with friends, as I also will do.

Bump. It struck me tonight - Borat is nominated for an Academy Award, Best Adapted Screenplay.

Do you think Sascha Baron Cohen will show up to the Oscars in character?

That'd be awesome, but I doubt it. He was his normal self when he won a Golden Globe.
But yeah, I hope he does. And I hope he brings the fat guy. <3 The fat guy was on the Adam Carolla show a few months back, and he said Sacha made him take a bunch of showers before they filmed that nude scene. Hehe.

Gocad's comment on last night's academy awards:

The Departed as Best Film?
The Lives of Others beats Pan's Labyrinth?

I can live with the other decision, but these two I find a bit disappointing.   :nono:

I would have preferred to see Letters from Iwo Jima win. But I guess they wanted to make up to Scorsese for not picking several times before...

The Departed was definitely not worthy of Best Film. Maybe Little Miss Sunshine or Letters from Iwo Jima, but I didn't see The Departed coming. Scorsese as Best Director deserved it, though, as did Forest for Best Actor and Alan for Best Supporting Actor. The woman who played the Queen in The Queen was pretty good as well.

While I do think that Marky Mark should have received an Oscar for Best Footwear  :p , I stand by my statement that The Departed is one of these "good, but not great" and that another film should have won. But since it's a Scorsese film that has won, I will not start an online petition to force the academy to revise their decision.

Jimmy Neutron and Shark Tale were nominated for Oscars?

The 81st Annual Academy Awards are tonight, I don't like them as much as I like the Golden Globes awards for some reason, I think it's all a big scam. And conspiracies, it's too glamourous.
