Except that "Polar Express" took the book and used it as a shrapnel target...
Now, I knew it wasn't gonna happen, but I would have really liked to have seen Uma Thurman get nominated for "Kill Bill 2." I don't care that it wasn't your standard Oscar fare movie, she still gave the BEST performance out of all the movies that came out in 2004.

because it wasn't exactly the type of movie normally considered Oscar Material, that's why. Which is a shame, really. "Kill Bill 2" was the best movie of 2004, HANDS DOWN.

Well that links not working anymore, and I didn't bother to look because I'd already seen them somewhere else.

I liked these nominees. I was glad to see the two nominations for Motorcycle Diaries, the two nominations for Eternal Sunshine, and the screenplay nomination for Before Sunset. I was also quite surprised with the Best Director nomination for Mike Lleigh and the Best Actor nomination for Eastwood.
Anyways, I hope that this will be Scorsese's year finally.

Little Miss Sunshine was a cute little film, but nominated for an Oscar? Naaaaaaaah. I'd feel good about The Departed's chances of winning if Babel wasn't nominated. Will Smith was good in Pursuit of Happyness. I wasn't amazed by Leo in Blood Diamond, but I believed him as a South African, so I guess that warrants a nomination. I preferred him in The Departed, though. And The Fountain should have been nominated for music. Too bad no one saw it. I didn't know until recently that The Last King of Scotland was about Idi Amin. Ha. Click is nominated for an Oscar? Yeah, it's only for Makeup, but still.

I saw The Fountain. I hardly noticed the music at all. Well, kind of near the end I did because it spazzed all out. Aside from that little freak-out, the music (played by the Kronos Quartet and some Mogwai, yes?) wasn't much to get a stiffy about. I liked what Clint Mansell did with the Kronos Quartet for Requiem For A Dream, though. Man, that kicked some arse.

Fag! BirthdayClown: 1 Ribbons: 0 I love the spazzed out part. It's "Death is the Road to awe" in case you wanna download it, sugar. Requiem's music is wicked awesome too. I just heart Clint Mansell.

Out of the ones nominated, I saw the Departed, and Little Miss Sunshine. They're both good, but I think Little Miss Sunshine was a slightly better when viewed as a movie, while the Departed was better when viewed as a film. Yes, there is a difference.
For example, Star Wars is a movie, while Citizen Kane is more of a film. A movie has more entertainment value while a film is more about art and directing, not to say that is necessarily lacks entertainment value.
That being said, the Oscars should be more about artistic achievement, so I would go with the Departed over Little Miss Sunshine. I have to see some of the other ones before I throw my stock behind any particular film, though.
Also, how is Borat! an adapted screenplay exactly?

I actually haven't seen any of the movies you mentioned. I have no interest in seeing Dreamgirls. Though I'd much rather see it than have to sit through that damn Norbit trailer again. And people seem to love it... Oh my, how they laugh. Ugh. I do want to see Volver and The Last King of Scotland. I'll probably sneak in to see The Last King after I see Smokin' Aces. I dunno where you live, but your theaters should be bringing back some of the Oscar nominees. I don't think you can go wrong with any of them. As far as movies that are still out that I've seen and liked: Apocalypto and The Pursuit of Happyness are the only ones I can think of. Movies that I haven't seen, but would recommend anyway : Children of Men, Curse of the Golden Flower and Pan's Labyrinth

Gocad's comment on last night's academy awards: The Departed as Best Film? The Lives of Others beats Pan's Labyrinth? I can live with the other decision, but these two I find a bit disappointing. I would have preferred to see Letters from Iwo Jima win. But I guess they wanted to make up to Scorsese for not picking several times before...

The Departed was definitely not worthy of Best Film. Maybe Little Miss Sunshine or Letters from Iwo Jima, but I didn't see The Departed coming. Scorsese as Best Director deserved it, though, as did Forest for Best Actor and Alan for Best Supporting Actor. The woman who played the Queen in The Queen was pretty good as well.
