Chay, come online.  Do you have AIM or something that we can talk about this book?

Overall, I loved the book.  I cried 4 times I think.  Thought the ending was a little weak, but w/e totally worth staying up for 10 hours and reading it straight through.

I believe I've stumbled upon an even greater mystery about the harry potter series than what once was thought of!

just finished, i liked it, it seemed to follow a distinct patter of, run, go somewhere, get double crossed/trapped, run, go somewhere else, get tricked, run, go somewhere else, lather rinse repeat...

I had a bunch of points to bring up, can't remember anymore, i'll get them in a sec,

Also, i totally saw the snape thing.

Still digesting everything, will give more comments soon.

EDIT: That's right, Berk, Bitch and Bastard, all in the same book? Rowling you potty mouth!

ummm, I know my star wars knowledge isnt that great, but who in star wars had a kid and named it after other people?

And, I dont find it all that odd. My brothers name is Richard Gilbert, thats my one grandpa's middle name, and the other + dad's first name.  My cousin is named after my Grandma as well.  Its actually quite a common thing, and considering what happened, I'd probably do the same thing.... Besides, everyone knows that you associate names with the people you knew.  Its unlikely that you are gonna name your child the same name as people you went to school with that you couldnt stand.

Just finished.  I am satisfied with the end.  Still chuckling over "flesh memory," though.

Say what you will about Rowling, but at least she's FINISHED her series in a timely manner. I'm looking at you, George R.R. Martin and Robert Jordan.

Finished in 2 days. I knew most of the deaths except the last two. That and Dumbledore's deception really were the two main startling things. It was good, but the only thing that annoyed me was that Rowling didnt include George in the last bit, and I wish she had. But overall, it was satisfying, although the middle bits got on my nerves a bit, like when theyre out and about and looking for stuff.

Ah, Snake is Metal Gear Solid, not Harry Potter.

Anyway, there's a post-Deathly Hallows article where JK Rowling explains the epilogue and other things. http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/19959323/

There was also a live chat with her today, though I can't find the link with the transcript right now.

I've read the plot summary on Wikipedia and most of what happened in the book according to the plot summary I've read in various fanfictions over the last 4 years. I seriously think that Rowling just took ideas from fanfiction. The epilouge especially sounded like it was written by a 12 year old fanfiction writer who just put it in there to shove it in everyone's faces who was together.

lolz @ winna

I thought JK kinda took a lot of things for LOTR (the Horcrux making the wearer ratty) and teh Matrix (the end bit in the station thing)

ok, well it's not that much, but even I noticed, which is saying a lot.

not a PEEL fix edit at all

I thought I'm the only one who thinks it's similar to Matrix XD
Not just King's Cross, but the next chapter, when Harry resurrects and talks like Jesus. I mean, like Neo ever since he resurrected.

Btw, I wouldn't say for sure she ripped it off from fanfictions, I've also been imagining the last book just like that: camping here and there and a big fight scene in the end.

Fanfiction is a blight on the literary world just for reasons like this.   :)

Sure, there's the odd quality thing floating around, but... just... gah. There's a huge rant here I can't be bothered getting in to. I hate fans.  :p

You gotta remember, there were only so many ways which in which a story/saga this complex could end. Over four years, and with so many fans, it's quite likely that they simply stumbled over what happened to be the way JK planned to end it anyhow. It's your fault for reading so many fanfictions!  ;)

I honestly did not see this coming.

Sirius?  Sure.  One of the Hogwarts students?  Why not.

Dumbledore?  Ok, so she never really explored his sexual preference in the books, and it does help explain why he was so effing loyal to Grindelwald when he was younger, but this seems so out of the blue.  It doesn't change my view of Dumbledore, but I kind of wish she'd addressed it in the books (yeah, yeah, she wanted to avoid controversy and blahblahblah).  For her to come out and tell us this after the fact almost feels... gimmicky.  If she hadn't been directly addressing a fan's question on the matter, I'd say this was a gimmick.    :hmpf:

ETA: Although I'm kind of happy to hear that at least one of the characters is gay.  I know she never would have addressed it in the books themselves in a million years, but I was always curious about how homosexuality was looked upon in the wizarding world.

So Dumbledore likes guys and Aberforth lieks goats, eh? Seems that the wizarding community is pretty open-minded about sexuality. I bet there's all sorts of wizards associated with different sorts of fetishes and deviancies.

S&M Wizards, Furry Wizards, Foot-loving Wizards, Seat-sniffing Wizards, Poo-loving Wizards, Wizards who prefer hairy people, Peadophile Wizards, Naturist Wizards, Incestuous Wizards... I could go on.

But I'll stop there. I think that it's hardly a revelation to say that there's at least one gay wizard. The purple robes did make me think a while ago that he might be meant to be gay, what with purple apparantly being the international colour of homosexuality. Or something.

Anyway, I'm thinking that the majority of fan reaction will be along the lines of "OMG! gay wizards should have bright pink robes and wands that look like dicks. They should all mince rather than walk, have plaited beards with ribbons in them, and speak like a corss between Julian Clary and the guy from Are You Being Served, then we could tell what they are!!"

Because people are mature and intelligent and Harry Potter fans especially so.

In reality... the sexual preferences of Dumbledore have little or inconsequential value to the series.

The author did explicitly state that he was homosexual though.  Apparently she was adament on this point... for whatever reason; it's her character though, so it doesn't make a difference to me.

Actually... I've read it went something like this:

Child: Does Dumbledore find true love?
J/K: Dumbledore is gay.

And therefore can never find true love, as that's not real love anyway.

I pulled out my Bible after hearing the announcement.  Dumbledore being gay could possibly be a sign in the book of Revelations preceding the Apocalypse.  I'm not super good at my theological interpretations, but making wild speculative claims seems to work for other people!
