David A:  I'm now almost positive that the lesbianism implied is there on purpose.  Yomiko seems much too interested in Nancy's doings.  This could be tied into a mentor/student relationship, but Nancy's constant talk of love and love stories doesn't help that.  Neither does her bust-revealing outfit.  Off-topic, I've always wondered why female spys/superheroines leave the bust so exposed.  You would think that the upper-chest would be a prime target for attacks.  It would be smart to protect that area.

I honestly thought that they would end up together at the end.  Maybe that would have been too happy an ending, though.

Yeah, and why does Red Sonja wear that silly chainmail bikini?  It can't provide much at all in the way of protection.  I mean, sure, she's Red Sonja; it's not like she even needs armor; but you'd think that she'd opt for some more comfortable clothing.

Been watching a few eps of Cowboy Bebop... (yes, still years behind everyone else).

Looks good. Decently amusing. Some very groovy action scenes.

And I'm sure I don't need to tell everyone this, but...

BEST SOUNDTRACK EVER!

Seriously. I live and breathe this sort of music. Blare, trumpets, blare!

I agree Slacky, Bebop has one of the best anime soundtracks. Hell, I'd buy the CD if I had time and the cash.

Stuff I'm Watching at the moment:
Nadesico.
Chobits.
Alchemist.

The Bebop sound track is amazing and I highly recomend it to everyone here. In fact I recomend most of Yokko Kanno's work. Her work on Escaflowne is equally as awesome.

I'm sure I've said this before, but if you like jazz in your anime, you should check out Blue Submarine #6.

After watching those eps I'd downloaded, I painfully shelled out the 127 dollars needed for the entire Bebop series.

Tres cool. The last ep made me happy/sad.

So long, Spike, you gloriously cavilier bastard.

I watched the first episodes of Fullmetal Alchemist and Ghost in the Shell:SAC.  I know Nurdy likes FMA, but that doesn't mean I'll care for it. After watching those episodes, I've come to this conclusion:  there are only 3 major plots to anime.

1. There is a secret para-military force that must deal with an unnatural, sometimes supernatural, enemy.  See Evangelion, Hellsing, Witch Hunter: Robin, Ghost in the Shell

2. There is an outlaw who is running from his past.  He may or may not remember the details of his former life, but it's usually about a woman.  See Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Outlaw Star

3.  There is a warrior/ninja in medieval times who fights for his honor above all else.  This may intersect with number 2. See Berserk, Kenshien, etc.

Don't forget the one with the horny schoolboy who spends all his time chasing beautiful girls.
Of course, he may or may not be part of a secret para-military force/an outlaw/a samurai.

That number 4.

4.)  Sexually frustrated schoolboy is forced to share a house with a hot alien babe, perverted father, and at least one 'comic relief character.'  Through hot alien babe, sexually frustrated schoolboy becomes more confident about himself and reaches his destiny.

Evan: I don't think Alchemist is your cup of tea, I reccomend you watch Blue Sub 6 if you haven't then. Anime in motion, that film. With jazz to compete with Bebop!

Damn, he beat me to the harem type.

5.)If the character is male, he's either a quiet wimp, a typical representation of the Japanese perfect male or a creepy pervert. The male characters female counterparts will have the opposite opinions or personalities to the main characters causing that ever so whacky friction and hate which always obviously leads to sex.

6.)If it's an old man, he's wise/perverted. He also may be hated by his son/grandson for something he did.

7.)Whacking people into the atmosphere is always funny, no matter what person is watching! Especially when repeated 2 billion times in the same series.

8.) If it's made by Gainix, boobs will bounce.

9.) If the series if starting to lag, or it gets incredibly boring always drop the typical swimsuited trip to the beach or a nice relaxing hotspring episode. Remeber to have the pervert, noise bleeds and shrieks of repressed Japanese women sending the latter into the atmosphere or otherwise it isn't gold!
If the anime is more PG-13 in nature, throw in a tedious clip show instead.

I think we have an anime clichés thread around here somewhere, evan.

Also, I saw the first few episodes of Read or Die: The TV.  It has even more implied lesbianism than the movie did.

Isn't all anime in motion?  I mean, 'cause if it wasn't, it would be manga.

Seriously though, Nurdy's right.  If you haven't seen Blue Sub 6, then you should watch it; and if you have seen it, you should watch it again.

FMA and Stand alone complex were well worth my staing up after the reception.  Dispite the fact that Makoto of stand alone is cleary designed from the fanservice-up blueprint what really got me was COMPITENT 3D CGI shading in a 2-D environment.  Both cel shading and realistic shading.  Check out the finishes on those cars.  It's also good to see adult swim allowing more than average viloence admitted to their shows.  They cringed not at the shooting off of a foot in GITS and rending the bloddy stubbys of full metal alchemist.

This might almost be enough for me to watch TV on a saturday night.

Well if you really want to know how many types of anime there are just watch Excel Saga. They pretty much go through all the types.

After all your list does not include.

Oddball/weirdo or someone everyone considers to be a goof off turns out to have amazing hidden power and feels they must uses this to prove they exist to the world or are the worlds strongest_whatever_: ala DBZ, Naruto and One Piece

Also I just started watchign the second gig of Stand alone complex. I did not think it was possible but so far this one is even more pretty than the 1st gig. I just hope the Laughingman turns up again  :D (not to mention that the music is really good again, well it is Yoko Kanno of Bebop fame)

That is so late '80s.  The leather jacket  covering up what is basically a one-piece swimsuit?  It's more distracting that erotic.  I guess it would have meant too much to update her original outfit.

I know a lot of you probably believe that I'm this big Pokemon fan.  Truth is, I'm not. I don't even like it.  My sister is the Pokemon fan, not me.  She collects the Pokemon beanies, cards, watches the cartoons, and collects the action figures.

Anyway, the only anime I've ever liked was that two episode "Sonic the Hedgehog".  The one with the president and that girl Sera.

I too am looking for something new to watch. Nothing too deep and 'WTF happened there'.... then again, that is what most anime seems to be about.
I was browsing through the HMV anime section and I was lost about what to spend my money on. I did however, settle for a DVD of Ninja Scroll (my crummy 'copied off of sci-fi video version had gotten a bit un-watchable).

Any suggestions?

Has anyone got any opinions on:

Azumanga Daioh
Dead Leaves (Yes, I know it's American-style animation done by the Japanese)

I'm probably going to pick up Macross Plus in the sales- any nay-sayers? And after reading the FLCL manga I really have to pick up the series.

I also got Excel Saga Volume 1 a few weeks ago. Wacky, but fun. And Space Butler is coolest name ever!

If you like mecha action, Macross Plus is a good one to watch.  The story is pretty well done and the animation is beautiful.  It's worth getting in my opinion, especially so if you're a fan of the original Macross series.

Wolfs Rain was one the the most beautiful shows I have ever seen. How it all ended when *SPOLERSAHEAD* all the wolves died in very dramatic way....how one character was so uptight and mean but than slowly was okay. And like, it was just really sad!*ENDSPOLIER*

I will say that I liked Wolf's Rain up to about half way. It stated off really interesting and different then it the second half it became really quite cliche. Let's just say that I kinda quessed that what happend to the characters in the end quite a way before the end. It was good just not fantastic.

Now some that is fantastic and that is the Trigun mangas. I just got the third volume of Trigun Maximum and it is fantastic. I do love the TV show but the manga just goes into so much more depth with the characters for example how Leonoff the puppet master and Grey the nine lives are delt with are very diffenrent. Let's just say if you liked the series you'll ove the mangas.

Wolf's Rain is from the same studio as Cowboy Bebop. Most of the same staff, with Yoko Kanno doing the music again. Unfortunatly not the same director as Bebop and it shows.

Sadly, yes I confess that I would ADORE getting more Azumanga Daioh.  I wouldn't exactly call it like M*A*S*H, but substitute Japanese public education for the Korean war.  But it has a knack for just making innanaties like a high school obsticle race into a wonderful and yes, cute, farce.  I'm also [Big surprise] a fan of most of the Seiyuu cast.

Azumaga Daioh is essentialy the closest thing Anime will get to "Peanuts"  Especially having come from a four-frame comic strip.
