for those of you that have this already, is the original version of the film (the one that was in theaters) on the DVD or is it just the extended version with 30+ minutes?

It's just the extended edition, over two discs + 2 discs of documentaries.

If you want the theatrical version you will have to buy/rent the DVD that was released in August.

Some of the scenes were extended, a few new scenes were added.  Overall a nice package.  Great way to spend a weekend.

None of the scenes really seemed tacked on, so if you're going to buy the DVD, get the new version.

Yeah, most of it worked well, but it just seemed to drag on and on. The gift-giving scenes, while important in the context of the entire trilogy, came off as rather cheesy, in my opinion. I can see why it was cut from the original release. The thing that made the purchase worthwhile for me was the doco on the visual effects. Man, I want some of that sweet proprietory software...
