They definitely cut back on the guest stars after the Scully era. I don't mind it when the guest stars are playing an actual character on the show, though it's quite irksome when they're just playing themselves and they're there for no good reason.

Guest stars playing themselves are bad, yes. What makes it worse is hearing a Simpsons family member say "Look, it's _____! Star of/inventor of/director of ______!" Ugh...makes me want to strangle the whole writing team.

It really surprises me to see that anybody looks at seasons 11 onward with any sense of fondess. I think the show was uniformly terrible by that point.

Season 10 was funny to me at the time, but I think I may have been in denial. The show could still pull of reasonably funny gags, but they forgot how to tell a story. Virtually every ending was a "wacky" ending. One of those "hey, we writers couldn't think of an ending so we're going to make a joke about how we couldn't think up a proper ending! Here's Vincent Price picking up John Madden in a bus for some reason! We are so zany!" endings.

Even with funny gags, without a story tying it together the whole thing just feels hollow.

Agreed. The only time I can remember that style of introducing a guest star being funny is Milhouse's multiple exclamations of "It's N'Sync!!!" in New Kids On The Blecch.

Speaking of which, that's an episode I originally hated, but that grows on me the more I watch it due to actually having a lot of really funny jokes. Particularly "Wait, you're not L.T. Smash...you're Lt. Smash!" "Yes...Lt. L.T. Smash."

I want to ask you guys (well, Gorky, JoshTheater and SolidSnake), how is Season 16 so different from 15?

If anything, I think season 16 is better than 13-15.

For the show to end with a good legacy, it would have to end before season 13.

1-12, then the movie would have been great.

OK, I've just finished my re-watching of the golden years followed by every episode that I gave a 6/10 or higher.

Almost all of the 6/10s have been knocked down, but "Holidays of Future Passed" really impressed me on second viewing. I liked it the first time, round, but now I'd say that it's the last truly great episode of the show - a title I previously gave to "Trilogy of Error" from about 10 years prior.

For the sake of comparison, I've put everything from what I consider to be the golden era (seasons 1-12) in bold.

cyber_turnip, I can't help but appreciate how much time that must have taken you. And you put them all in order too!!! This is a phenomenal list. This is the most perfect list I've ever seen, and it even counts down. Everyone who makes lists should make 'em like this. THANK YOU!!!  :D

103. Viva Ned Flanders - 8/10
100. Holidays of Future Passed - 8/10
94. Trilogy of Error - 8/10
91. Homer to the Max - 8/10
49. Treehouse of Horror IX - 8.5/10

Yay! Homer to the Max made your top 100! Yeah, Treehouse of Horror IX is shockingly good. I only realised after re-watch I totally underrated it myself when I originally saw it. Also, great to see Viva Ned Flanders rated high. It's always on the worst episodes lists so it's really underrated. I'd probably say Holidays of Future Passed is my favourite Future episode. Amazing how long it takes for another Simpsons episode to match Trilogy of Error, eh? :p

EDIT - I'm currently working on a Simpsons list from Season 1-12 myself. It's pretty tough.

Wow. Just wow. I don't even remember most of 17-24, so such a list would be impossible for me without some serious rewatching that, frankly, I don't want to do. Very impressive, CT. :)

Haha, I'm glad you all appreciated that instead of just finding me a borish nerd like people would in real life.

And AdrenalinDragon, I completely agree about "Treehouse of Horror IX". I loved it as a kid because I had it on that old "Too Hot for TV" video tape that they released and I was obsessed with the Halloween specials, but I expected to think it was fairly weak when I came back to it. But re-watching things, it's definitely one of the very best "Treehouse of Horror" episodes.

Also, looking at that list, I've just realised that I think there are 268 good episodes and 265 bad episodes. The good still outweighs the bad! It's a shame that that's almost certainly going to change once 4 more episodes air. But then, who knows, maybe the rest of season 25 will surprise me.

So the only "good" Jean-era episodes are:

Treehouse of Horror XIII
Future-Drama
Don't Fear the Roofer
Thank God It's Doomsday
Springfield Up
Holidays of Future Passed

Random. :p

Okay, first of all you didn't even number it. Second of all, you didn't rate it, third of all, if your gonna make a list let cyber_turnip be your example because he made the best list I've ever seen.

That's an excellent list, CT! It's one of the very best that I've ever seen! It's interesting to see how the ratings slowly went down as the seasons went up. Great work! :D

Cyber-T, that's an awesome list! I agree almost 100% with that list. Alot of time must have been put into making the list. Great Job!

Unfortunately, the next episode YOLO looks like it'll be another episode to put in your #510.

Thanks again, guys. It's always nice to be appreciated.

So the only "good" Jean-era episodes are:

Treehouse of Horror XIII
Future-Drama
Don't Fear the Roofer
Thank God It's Doomsday
Springfield Up
Holidays of Future Passed

Random. :p

Don't forget "Treehouse of Horror XII".

Almost all of those episodes are essentially non-canon, so I don't know if it's too random. Obviously both "Treehouse of Horror" episodes are non-canon. Both of the episodes set in the future have debatable canons, and a future-setting that lets them do whatever they want. "Thank God It's Doomsday" is largely a dream sequence, again, making it, more or less, non-canon. "Springfield Up" is canon but it's still making use of a framing device that lets them do things that they normally couldn't - not to mention, grounding the show and forcing it to be a bit less wacky than usual.

"Don't Fear the Roofer" is a bit of an anomaly, though. I've no idea what happened, there.

I did at first, but then realized that although I don't fully agree with it, the list sums up The Simpsons' career very well. I just hope that you're not starting a trend of long lists here. There's no need for more.

It's probably because half of those episodes are boring. I have a few at the bottom, too.

Well, YOLO wasn't that bad. Story was decent, but Eduardo seemed unnecessary. Honour code -plot was better, but it was too short and a B-plot.

Well, regardless, this episode was pretty average. A couple of chuckles here and there, but while both plots seemed relatively original for The Simpsons, they still felt very much like familiar ground being re-treaded. Also, fuck this episode's title. Easily the weakest of the season so far, and I had actually enjoyed it up to this point.

It also wasn't pretty average. It was pretty average for post-the movie Simpsons. That means that it sucked arse-hairs.

Agreed with The Telltale Head and Krusty Gets Busted. The former is a classic and the latter is necessary viewing to set up the Sideshow Bob saga (at least, back when the writers used to give a shit about giving it some semblance of continuity... I still think the Sideshow Bob plot should've finished with Brother From Another Series).
