Discovered this show on MeTV two years ago when I was recovering from foot surgery.  This is the ideal 70's cop show.  James Garner, an awesome actor of his generation (who usually starred in war and cowboy movies) plays a con man turned detective.   He fought in the Korean War, came back home and became a con man.

Then went to prison for a crime he didn't commit, and became a detective who lives in a trailer on the beach with his father who helps him solve crimes.   The cool thing about this show is the action, car chases, and it's rye humor.   And Rockford is very easy going and not hardcore.   PLus, he's not overly tough, and in fact keeps getting beated around sometimes.  Rockford also has issues with an ex-cellmate he was in prison with named Evelyn "Angel" Martin who's always getting into mishaps.   Angel is the Fry of the Rockford Files.

This is a really awesome and cool show.  You can see it if you get in MeTV or watch the episodes on Youtube.   You won't regret watching it!

I used to watch this occasionally decades ago; it was rather fun as I recall :)
