I got the DVD and watched it this morning with my once again laid-up dog.  I took special care to listen and look for the voices Finn heard when the Hosnian system got blowed up.  As others pointed out the crowd I was thinking of assembles after Finn turns to look. Interesting.

Apart from the mid-story focus change, I still find myself liking it.  Even the ending,  which I still don't like,  is okay.  I get the feeling that I have been constructing Episodes 8 and 9 in my mind, which is why I don't like it.  It may also be an effect of the pacing, which, for the first time, feels as fast as it is.

Sorry about your pranged pup, Doc :(

I've been telling myself that I'll wait 'till the weekend to watch it rather than staying up late tonight and then playing poker tomorrow night until 0200-0300.

But who am I fooling?  As soon as I saw this a few minutes ago:

I can even watch the prequels, now that there are edits where the wretched-amphibian-who-shall-not-be-named doesn't speak.

The Phantom Edit really is wonderful compared to the original prequels. However, it's still got some atrocious moments in there, and it's still not up to the standards of either the original trilogy or The Force Awakens.

I was referring not to the classic, The Phantom Edit, but rather to the Anti-Cheese edits which are available on Youtube (in the US, at least).

The editing is not of the near-perfect quality of the Despecialized Editions, but I can recall only one or two spots where it was both obvious and slightly annoying.  Which were still orders of magnitude less painful than watching the prequels in their original form :)

And it came today.  Now all I have to do is *not* stay up all night watching it, re-watching scenes, checking out the special features, etc.  until I'm dead tired and can't function tomorrow.  By which I mean not being at my best during the poker game tomorrow night that will certainly run 'till at least 0200 :)

Same. I just shrugged and yawned when it was initially announced but now I'm actually interested.

Anyone think Darth Vader/Emperor Palpatine will be involved?

I like Mark Hamil's cameo at the end of the video.

I did see a couple of those red guys in one shot, so the Emperor is a good bet.  I do hope Tarkin plays a role in the story.  Maybe it's just because Peter Cushing played him, but he was always my favorite bad guy.

I've seen this all over the net today, and was puzzled because I couldn't remember that shot from Empire Strikes Back.  Naturally I put on my copy and pored over all of the scenes in the tunnels of Hoth, without luck.  Apparently it's a deleted scene :p

Rogue One teaser is amazing......  the movie might be crap.. but the trailer is pushing the right keys..

Im surprised at how friends who hate ep VII and were so exceptic about the entire new disney era loved this easer... even more than me

dumb smile when seeing Yavin IV base... dumber smile seeing Mon Mothma ... nerdgasm when seeing those Destroyers with the DS assambling in the background...

lets see how this develops ... they have said long ago that Rogue One's tone will greatly differ from the standard StarWars movies.. its suposed to be darker , more war oriented and with more grey characters on both sides...   will see...

Also WTF is wrong with people complaining about female roles...

seriously ... i feel nearly Flanders comenting this.. but after with all the backlash episode VII cast got (and other works like Mad Max fury road).. seeing how some people go down full hate on this because they see feminism lobies as the only reason you can cast a female as main role... are we going back 40/50 years in time or what the hell is going on?

Yeah, you should probably watch the full theatrical cut of Episode I a few more times.

(Shh, everyone...let's see if he does it!)

Rogue One does look interesting. I'm most excited by the prospect of entirely new characters who don't all have to be related to each other, but we all know how that can go.

By Grabthar's hammer, by the suns of Worvan, I swear that I shall never watch a non-Anti-Cheese version of any of the prequals again!

OK, I watched the trailer teaser.  If the release stays with that feel and doesn't get too deep into the tired loner rebel trope it might be really cool!  And I'm obviously not the first person to immediately see a parallel between the lead characters of Rogue One and Force Awakens :)

hopefully Jin Erso wont be a force user...
seems that nearly all are new characters ... with the exception of Mon Mothma .. for now..

Since its placed right before episode IV i wonder if we might get a glimpse at characters like Wedge, Biggs (unlikelly if they folow the deleted scenes of ANH) or other rebel pilots that were at Yavin IV at that time

The adventures of Wedge Antilles and Rogue Squadron were made into a seventeen-book* series for the EU. Maybe they'll do a celluloid version.

I once estimated twelve-or-so to be about a million, so your error margin seems reasonable.

It seems like the trailer is overplaying the roguishness of the protagonist in the Rogue One trailer.  She's only got three lines (about a million words), but two of them are delivered in a rather sarcastic or insubordinate way.  I could see not liking her character if these aren't cherry-picked to make her as Han Solo-ish as possible.

I was sort of hoping she'd end up being Captain Phasma, but that seems unlikely as Gwendoline Christie is only five years older than Felicity Jones and a full foot (about a million inches) taller.

Rogue Squadron film would be awesome, although (correct me if I'm wrong) so much of their storylines hinged on the Empire not fluffing out within a year of Endor as the new Canon dictates. I'd certainly imagine you could have a story about a dashing rebel squadron set around the time of the films, but the problem I see is that if they do not directly tie in then maybe the appeal won't be so great - or the execs won't believe it to be.

Really looking forward to Rogue One. One slight concern, a bit like with Rebels, is that they're establishing major characters that, well, technically, can't play a major role in the storyline after the events of ANH. So let's see how that ends up. Would Rogue One have a really dark ending? Would there be solace in knowing that even if bad things happen, ultimately they are not in vain; because one has got to assume that they do succeed in getting the Death Star plans...

Would have loved it if one of the characters revealed his name to be "Kyle" but no...

Talking about character names - has anyone heard of a theory that Rey is not her original name? If not, I'm going to coin it.

No, I'd not heard that theory at all.  The only thing I've heard (relatively) lately about Rey is the fact that neither of her parents appeared in Force Awakens, which certainly shot down a number of fan theories of her origin.

Well in admission it may be an extremely weak theory of mine, but it was born from the idea that the Rebel pilot helmet she wears while sat on her AT-AT has the name "Rey" on it (or letters to that effect) and used to belong to Dosmit Ræh, an elite pilot. Now I haven't read her origins book so I don't know if it explicitly states that her name has always been Rey, but I do wonder whether growing up idolising this Rebel pilot (literally) left her substituting her name for hers, in case, I don't know, she forgot her own name or something.

Might make an interesting choice for her - if she's told that she's someone special and her parents are important and her real name is something-something, will she resist and just try and remain "Rey"?

Ooorr, it could simply be that Dosmit Ræh was one of a multitude of corpses that Rey has come across and she went "good grief she has my name!"

Also, wouldn't it be interesting if Rey's parents are not mysterious Jedi figures and are in fact tied to the Empire?

Also, possible Episode VIII spoilers:

Can't say of course that they wouldn't return there later, but also I question someone being able to be an onlooker in that location.

It's legit that the 3 of them were in Ireland to film for VIII (possibly John Boyega, too), but like you said, we only have this person(s) eyewitness account to go off, which isn't much at all. The Millennium Falcon set was also on a cliffside around the area where they were filming (pics of that are online).

@Tachyon - well, the helmet name is something that I saw someone else point out - my Aurebesh is not strong enough to notice that on my own :p

@Danny -
Just seen this article which could either be used to deny claims of filming in Ireland, as its being suggested that its all being recreated in Pinewood, but at the very least its dispelled my concerns that any further filming has to take place on the island itself, which would have made onlooking eyewitnesses unlikely. But yeah, they could have done other stuff on the Irish mainland, or the coast at least. As half the cast it seems also appears in Game of Thrones, they probably could have pointed out some cracking locations...

I often have the regional news showing on my TV in the background in the mornings, with the sound muted, and often with the screen partially or completely blocked by the lid of my laptop.  Just now, on the bit of TV that I can see, I read the bottom caption of current segment and it was titled "X Wing Factory", which immediately perked me up.

Moving my laptop a bit to the left so that I could see more of the TV, I saw that the title in its entirety was actually "A Tour of the New Boeing 777X Wing Factory" :P  What a let-down :)

So, is Rogue One some way related to sequel trilogy? I mean, it's like a theatrical stand-alone film, but it's coming now between episodes VII and VIII.

Well, it's obviously set after III but before IV, but as far as connections to the sequel trilogy, I doubt there will be any significant ones, if any at all. However, the internet went crazy saying Felicity Jones' character HAD to be Rey's mother (literally for no other reason than "everyone in Star Wars is related!" - I kid you not).

We do have a little connection to the prequel trilogy, with Genevieve O'Reilly returning to the role of Mon Mothma, who she previously portrayed in episode III. Also, I'm taking this with a grain of salt for obvious reasons, but Wikipedia originally listed Forest Whitaker's character as being a "Clone Wars veteran" - but this has since been removed.
