It's ok if you actually *look* like the person your cosplaying as. Or at least the same sex.
But then again, some girls can get away with being anime guys, cos lets face it, most anime guys can look quite femimine.

I do agree with Rikku that it works if they have the right sort of stature for the characters. I have seen some good cosplay but on a whole not good.

If you are one of the following, do NOT cosplay.
1) overweight, obese, heavy, big-boned, or FAT
2) a man who wants desperately to be a young girl
3) Have massive facial acne, horrible teeth, or various problems of the face.

That's exactly the point. It means "V for Victory", just like it does over here. The gestures usually used when you've bested someone, like "I'm so much better than you. I beat you." I think, but I'm not 100% sure on that.

I do know that's what it means in DBZ, where it's done a lot.

^ A deeply messed up series.  I saw most of one episode and was extremely weirded out, just by that much.

And no, I do not hate anime.  I happen to like the Read or Die series quite a bit.  It's the fanboys I can't stand.

Yeah, Lain's really, really confusing. I just finished the third disc today, and I think I'm going to have to rewatch the previous three in order to understand the smallest truths in disc 4. But it's all worth it, isn't it? You don't have shows like that on US tv.

If you liked lain read the book Snow Crash, Lain got a lot of tech and ideas from it, Snow Crash is much more satirical then Lain but it still is a great book.

Lain does indeed rock. Teh only way I see it being shown it the UK is like at midnight on the sci-fi channel but since they have stopped showning anime there it is doubtful.

I saw Lain. It struck me as a clumsy attempt to point out basic truths that came out confusing and disjointed. It's not as deep as you might think... it's just intentionally obtuse.

Also, I ordered the Trigun dvd box set from ebay. Yay.
