Yes, but the two genre tend to have the same following.  Authors sometimes write both.  And they're always stuck in the same section of the book store.  Also, both the Hugo and Nebula awards lump SciFi and Fantasy together.

The quote is Arthur C. Clarke's: "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic"

And 3 Tolkien related things are nominated for the Hugo Awards: a biography of Tolkien, a book with ilustrations from Middle Earth and the movie.

J.R.R Tolkien was very aware that he created a world that existed within his books but he also said that it was a world that could be in hands by the people with paint, with music, with drama and that is the thing that Peter Jackson has done. Tolkien created a modern myth and what is happen is that by turning this into a film, a filmmaker has given it a new dimension, has taken that myth one step further which is how myths are born, how are they carried from generation to generation. So in a way I see Peter Jackson is part of the mythic process which has begun by Tolkien when he wrote the first line of the Lord Of The Rings.
I declare that The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Rings is the better book and the better movie.
See you in December 18(The premiere of The Two Towers)so we can open this topic again and talk about those 2 movies.
