Get em. They're cheaper then most Season DVD's depending on where you look, and they are the best sound & picture quality of the show that you can get hold of. And they come with entertaining Comentary that has Grant and Naylor togeather again in one room.

And it's 8 seasons.

I love Red Dwarf, the dvd's are very good. Has anyone seen the website showing photo's from the american pilot episode? Terry Farrel (ie Jadzia Dax from Deep Space 9) played the cat!

I have the american pilot episode. It is very different and not very good, a few little things about it are like newer red dwarf, for instance they use the star bug dorms as the red dwarf dorms, and kryten (only original british actor included in it), is in the show as part of red dwarf crew.

Welcome to PEEL, Red_Queen! Stick around, try the Gocad. Although, if you fall out of line, we'll be forced to hunt the Red Queen...

Red Dwarf was my junior school obsession, I have all the first 7 series episodes on tape. Haven't got round to the DVDs yet, because series 8 badly scarred me against the show.

Well, there are only six or eight episodes in each, so really there are just over fifty episodes in all, I think.

I think that Season 3 of RD should be coming out around the same time as Futurama S4...

Interestingly, Jay Kogen and Wally Wolodarsky (from The Simpsons) were signed up to write for the show, but (both) pilots failed.

I preferred Clare Grogan to Chloe Annett. Annett seemed to have the idea in her head that Red Dwarf was serious drama and all comic lines must be delivered as woodenly as possible. And also any other line.

And I thought Backwards was a lot better than Last Human. Possibly because I think Doug Naylor is scum.

After Futurama? That's still yonks off. The Red Dwarf stuff is being released months off of Futurama's releases. Both can be had. in the same year. But it's time for Futurama Season 2 here so that's my next DVD buy.
Unless something cool pops up in the $5-$10 bin at the wall-mart again before then.

Oh and Clare Grogan, way better then Chole.

Second.

I discovered after reading those two novels that what I really liked about Red Dwarf was what Rob Grant put into it. Backwards is a comedy novel with sci-fi added as spice. Last Human believes itself to be a sci-fi novel, and adds in obligatory humour. The former is truer to the spirit of Red Dwarf.

Hah! Found you!

Yes, I've seen them, and I have to say that the British version is probably definitive.

Yes - the original pilot wasn't well recieved, so another one was made, with some cast changes. Check out  http://www.reddwarf.co.uk/deck05/down_time/red_dwarf_usa.html

There's quite a few - I think there's a thread in Weird Scenes which talks about this...

Edit: ...well, if there is, I can't find it  :)

Hmm, the Kryten/Bender becoming human thing hadn't struck me, I think the most obvious thing there is Kryten's confusion that his "nipples didn't work" and Bender confused about not getting good reception on his relocated "antenna". There are other similarities but I think there's a difference in interpretation of the situation if not humour. While Kryten is only confused by his new body Bender goes wild in it.

backwards was my all time favourite and i agree that s3-6 were the best the first two they were just finding thier feet and the original kryten was a bit sad but they were still decent but s7 and 8 were quite questionable i wonder if they would have been better if they hadnt had to have that hiatus due to craig charles(lister) going to jail, or were the scripts already written for s7 when it was put on hold??

I used to watch Red Dwarf obsesivly but that wained over the years. So I forgot some things.
So I ask anyone who knows. Was there a Robot soap that Kryten watched? and what was is called?

Androids wasn't it? That was when they had the other actor as Kryten, and then he appeared to disappear for several episodes after that. I don't know when he came into it for good.

There was a soap he watched in the episode 'Kryten' called 'Androids'. The script is here if you want to find out more.
EDIT- As Ozor Mox said, Robert Llewelyn didn't appear until the first episode of the third season, which was 'Backwards'.

Personally, I don't know whether to look forward to the Red Dwarf movie or not- if the original writers are on board it might not end up like season 8 did *shudders*.

I thought that was it. Yeah I knew about the change in Kryten. If I remeber they story behind the change was that the crew found Kryten's body smashed on an asteroid (at the end of the episode "Kryten" he zoomed off on a hoover motorbike) and rebulit him. Apperentlyey this explained why he looked different adn why he once again obayed humans.
If I rememer right David Ross (I think that was the name of the guy who played the orginal Kryten) returned as the Talky toaster in "White hole" I think.

If you watch the opening credits of Ep1 of series 3, it has a sequence that explains the changes - how & why Kryten has come back and why Holly has taken the apperance of Hilly from the last episode of series 2 (you need to slow it down to read it all though).  With regards to the movie, I believe that Doug Naylor is co-writing & directing and there are no cast changes.  Bit concerned though - look at the other Brit tv shows that have become movies ...
Porridge, Steptoe & Son, Rising Damp.  I just hope that they conclude the cliffhanger from the last series, if the movie goes in a different direction.
Oh, and Clare Grogan is the only Kochanski for me.
