Thank you for being a friend
Travelled down the road and back again
your heart is true,
you're a pal and a confidant

And if you threw a party
Invited everyone you knew
You would see, the biggest gift would be from me
And the card attached would say,
Thank you for being a friend.

It's cold outside, there's no kind of atmosphere
I'm all alone, more or less
Let me fly far away from here
Fun, fun, fun in the sun, sun, sun

I want to lie shipwrecked and comatose
Drinking fresh mango juice
Goldfish shoals nibbling at my toes
Fun, fun, fun in the sun, sun, sun
Fun, fun, fun in the sun, sun, sun

There are no lyrics to it, but the theme from DS9 is just beautiful and aweinspiring. Coupled with the great shots of the station, it's the coolest intro sequence ever. Ever.

Some nice lyrics though:

Daring duck of mystery,
Champion of right,
Swoops out of the shadows,
Darkwing owns the night.
Somewhere some villain schemes,
But his number's up.

(3-2-1) Darkwing Duck (When there's trouble you call DW)
Darkwing Duck (Let'sget dangerous)
Darkwing Duck (Darkwing, Darkwing Duck!)

Cloud of smoke and he appears,
Master of surprise.
Who's that cunning mind behind
That shadowy disguise?
Nobody knows for sure,
But bad guys are out of luck.
'Cause here comes (Darkwing Duck)
Look out! (When there's trouble you call DW)
Darkwing Duck (Let's get dangerous)
Darkwing Duck (Better watch out, you bad boys)
Darkwing Duck!

I liked the Chip and Dale : Rescue Rangers theme, Darkwing Duck's was cool as well. I also thought Batman Beyond's theme was very good, set a dark and brooding atmosphere right from the get-go.

The Darkwing Duck theme tune is classic, I also love Futurama's and The Simpsons theme tunes. Another show that had a cool theme tune, but no lyrics was Eerie Indiana with a harmonica tune that sounded so cool. Oh and of course lets not forget Duck Tales Awhoooo oooo :)

Most theme songs are really stupid. I'll take a good instrumental piece any day.

For a really good example (IMO) of the greatness of the DS9 intro music, try DeathCharge's Alternative Futurama Intro at CGEF. I really like it.  :)

I find the best tunes are usually ones that were songs before they were theme tunes (Jackass, Norm, Royle Family), then they're not some cruddy thing some out-of-work musician made up.

That said, there are exceptions (Red Dwarf, The A-Team) but the greatest ever theme tune is from Whatever Happened To The Likely Lads!

The Mission: Impossible theme is great.  The A-Team!  Also great.  I remember Knight Rider having a cool theme too.  And who can forget the Wheel of Fortune theme?

Wheel Of Fortune had a theme tune? It was never the same after Nicky Campbell left, anyway.

Game shows are usually the biggest offenders for crappy theme tunes, unless you're an ELP fan and watch The Generation Game.

NB: UK-centric post.

Yeah, and the Angel theme, and the Voyager theme (probably the best thing about that show), and the NYPD Blue theme.

I like the new Enterprise theme song and the intro's 'brief history of exploration'.  I think it's pretty fitting.

It's been a long road, getting from there to here.
It's been a long time, but my time is finally near.
And I will see my dream come alive at last.
I will touch the sky.
And they're not going to hold me down no more,
No they're not going to change my mind.

'Cause I've got faith of the heart,
I'm going where my heart will take me.
I've got faith to believe... I can do anything.
I've got strength of the soul,
And no one's going to bend or break me.
I can reach any star, I've got faith.
I've got faith.
Faith of the heart.
Honorable mention goes to the themes to 'Battlestar Galactica', 'Buck Rodgers', 'Magnum PI', 'Fame', 'Friends' and for some reason 'The Fall Guy'.

In the not-too distant future
Next Sunday A.D.
There was a guy named Joel
Not too different from you or me.

He worked at Gizmonics Institute
Just another face in a red jumpsuit
He did a good job cleaning up the place
But his bosses didn't like him so they shot him into space

We'll send him cheesy movies
The worst we can find
He'll have to sit and watch them all
And we'll monitor his mind.

Now keep in mind Joel can't control where the movies begin or end
Because he used those special parts to make his robot friends.

Robot roll-call!
Cambot
Gypsy
Tom Servo
Croooooooooooooow!

If you wonder how he eats and breathes and other science facts
Just repeat to yourself it's just a show
You should really just relax
For Mystery Science Theater 3000!
I love that show...

I actually liked Mike better. But the Joel-era theme song is the best. The Mike theme songs still have the same tune, but they aren't as loud and weird and cool as the original Joel song.

Spider-man, spider-man
Does whatever a spider can
Spins a web, any size
Catches theives just like flies
Oh yeah, here comes the Spider-man

Is he strong, listen bud
He's got radioactive blood!
Can he swing from a thread
Take a look overhead!
Hey there, there goes the Spider-man!

In the chill of the night
At the scene of the crime
Like a streak of light
He arrives just in time!

Spider-man, Spider-man
Friendly neighborhood Spider-man
Wealth and fame, he's ignored
Action is his reward
To him, life is a great big bang-up
Wherever there's a hang-up
You'll find the Spider-man!

Making your way in the world today
Takes everything you got.
Takin' a break from all your worries
Sure would help a lot.
Wouldn't you like to get away...

All those nights when you've got no lights
Your check is in the mail
And your little angel
Hung the cat up by its tail
And your third fiance didn't show...

Sometimes you wanna go...
Where everybody knows your naaaame
And they're always glad you caaaame
You wanna be where you can see
Our troubles are all the same
You wanna be where everybody knows your name.

Roll outta bed, Mr. Coffee's dead,
The morning's looking bright,
And your shrink ran off to Europe,
And he didn't even write.
And your husband wants to be a girl...

Be glad there's one place in the world...
Where everybody knows your naaaame
And they're always glad you caaaame
You wanna go where people know
That people are all the same
You wanna go where everybody knows your name.

I like the song and the intro, but it sucks as a theme.  I like Voyager's song (and the show, for that matter).

Personal Favs apart from several already mentioned

Jessica  :) - the original version of the theme tune to BBC Top Gear, before they rediculously 'modernised' it up.

The Chain - the soundtrack that went with BBC Formula One coverage.

None of these programs exist anymore (BBC axed mainstream Top Gear and lost F1 to ITV)

Some of you might be old enough to remember this one:

Well, I'm not the kind to kiss and tell, but I've been seen with Farrah.
I've never been with anything less than a nine, so fine.
I've been on fire with Sally Field, gone fast with a girl named Bo.
But somehow they just don't end up as mine...
It's a death-defying life I lead, I'll take my chances.
I've died for a living in the movies and TV.
But the hardest thing I'll ever do is watch my leading ladies,
Kiss some other guy while I'm bandaging my knee.

I might fall from a tall building, I might roll a brand-new car,
'Cause I'm the unknown stuntman that made Redford such a star.

I've never spent much time in school, but I taught ladies plenty.
It's true I hire my body out for pay, a-hey hey!
I've gotten burned over Cheryl Tiegs, blown up over Rachel Welch
But when I wind up in the hay, it's only hay, hey hey!
I might jump an open drawbridge, or Tarzan from a vine,
'Cause I'm the unknown stuntman, that makes Eastwood look so fine.

They'll never make me president, but I got the best first ladies,
Someday´s I got´em as far as the eye can see - ouee
A morning dove with Jacky Smith, a crash in the night with Cheryl
But in the end they never stay with me
On my fall from the Tower Building, so Burt Reynolds don't get hurt
I might leap the mighty Canyon, so he can kiss and flirt
Well, that smooth talker's kissing my girl - I'm just kissing dirt
Yes, I'm the lonely stuntman, that made a lover out of Burt
