Holy shit. That was amazing. Well, the A-plot of the whole destruction of the Na'vi's home to get to the motherload is a classic Hollywood plotline, so the majority of the movie with all the deceit and destruction and blah blah blah was predictable. The B-plot of Jake living with the Na'vi was very interesting. It was both original and showed off the technical achievements of the film. On the topic of tech, the 3D was the best I have ever seen. It wasn't the amazingness I was expecting, but it was great. The CGI is fantastic, I forgot midway through that the Na'vi weren't really there.

Overall, it wasn't the best movie I've seen this year, but it'll get a Best Picture nod come Oscar time. I give it a solid A.

The title should read Ebert Gave This Movie Review Thread a Big Thumbs Up!

Just my opinion of course.

I think he retired the thumbs or something. He gave knowing four stars, not two thumbs.

I honestly think avatar is more three dimensional than real life

Avatar in 3D

It took me personally a long, long time for my eyes/brain to get used to the 3D, I kept trying to "understand" how to look at it, what to focus on, etc, it was kind of confusing, but towards the end it's not so bad. The movie was decent enough.

9/10

Aliens

Wow this surpasses Alien by miles! It was thrilling, action packed, full of sci-fi goodness, and it had Kyle Reese in it. I would love to see this movie on an imax theater.

I like both Alien and Aliens about equally, the first one is a great sci-fi/horror and the second is a great sc-fi/action

Alien 3 was okay...
However I may be the only person in the world who enjoyed Alien Resurrection.

Sorry to disappoint you Coldy, you aren't the sole fan of Alien Resurrection, I like it too... I especially like Winona Ryder with a pixie cut

I still think Alien is the best in the series though.

I like resurection too. I think ppl assume it's bad because it's not as good alien(s) (cubed (arguably)) it's still a good film

I was so happy with Aliens that I'm pretty sure that if I see Alien 3 it will taint my love for the second movie. I loved Newt and Hicks so much I hate that they're wasted in the opening of the next movie.

I think Tyraniak hit the nail right on the head about the differences between the first 2 films.  In the original film, a character would get snuffed & I'd think "eh, whatever".  In the second film, I was emotionally invested in some of the characters.  And, IMO, that's a sign of a really good film; you care what happens to the characters on the screen.

Dances with Fern Gully of the Jedi
White Guilt: The Movie

Avatar

While astounding on a technical level, not a single shred of original storytelling to be found here.

+ The visuals.  Sweet Jeebus, the visuals.
+ The Banshees.  To quote the great sage William Smith, "I have GOT to get me one of these!"
+ The visuals.
+ Have I mentioned the visuals?
+ 2.5 hours of Zoe Saledena's CGI blue sideboob.

- The story.  Seen it told many times in many movies.  Move along, folks, there's nothing new here.
- Hey Sam Worthington, pick an accent!
- Unobtanium?  Really?  Why not just call it Wonderflonium?  Or Writersblockium?
- 3D is a fad, not the next great breakthrough.  Sure, it provides depth-of-field, but it looks like a diorama of 2D images.

As usual, Coldy, you are correct.  3D was big back in the 50's, now it's brought back as a novelty.  Another sign that most of hollywierd stopped being creative decades ago & now has to resort to gimmicks to sell films.

When Harry Met Sally

This has been pretty much my favorite (read: one of the few really, really good) romantic comedy since the age of twelve, which says more about my bizarre sensibilities as a viewer than anything else. Anyway: funny movie. Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal have more chemistry than you'd think, and Bruno Kirby and Carrie Fisher are sweet together. That "They Did It!" scene, with the split screens and all, kind of showcases the brilliance of this movie.

And, on a note that has nothing to do with the quality of the film, I love that Billy Crystal's final speech is used in an episode of Scrubs to hilarious results--just sayin'.

Man I could never follow the Pirates of the Caribbean. I never thought that they were all that special.
LOTR is another thing. Maybe because I read the LOTR books when I went to college. Peter Jackson did a great job.

 Solid 9/10 for all three.

That's one reason why I won't be seeing Alice in Wonderland, the 3d effect in the trailer was way to much. I can do a similar effect with Adobe After Effects.

I think that Dead Man's Chest had the best visuals of the three. Davy Jones was amazing. The first's was good but not amazing, whilst the third's was overkill. Overall movies, the first was obviously the best, and I agree with Dogdoo that the quality decreased as the series went on.
