I'm watching The Simpson's episode, "Bart the Mother", which happens to be the last appearance of Phil Hartman before his tragic death. I don't care that it happened almost 13 years ago it's still sad!

RIP :(

And such a modest man too, denying he was.
My favorite quote of his was when his grandson asked him if he was a hero in WWII.  He said "No... but I served in a company of heroes".  He was the prototypical modern soldier, and I'm sad to see him leave us.

This is a TRUE War Hero
http://articles.latimes.com/2006/mar/26/local/me-doss26
and on IMDb
http://uk.imdb.com/title/tt0302427/
wow, i've never heard of him or that film... will have to check it out.

both men were real heroes. it's a terrible tragedy that the world war 2 generation is passing, and so quickly.

and damn, RIP pete postlethwaite. he was the only good part of aeon flux, jurassic park 2, and the clash of the titans remake (alien 3 was a good movie!).

Paul Schaffer of the David Letterman show used to do a hilarious Don Kirshner impression, way back when SNL was fairly new.  Adios, Don...

RIP jack lalanne.

I had little trouble finding Doss. I just inserted "You can't be a hero and carry a gun" into Google and up he popped.

But I'm not surprised that you didn't know him. Soldiers who save 75 wounded and insure that they see their families again are not as romantic as those who kill scores of Godless Ruskies/ Chinese/ Krauts (insert your favorite xenophobic nomenclature here).
man, don't bring this shit into a memorial thread. let's just agree that they were both heroes and spare the morality debates for another thread.

Debate thread... Where???
Richard Winters :puke: was no hero to me. And now you know how I feel about memorializing a criminal.
actually i don't, first we'll need an actual criminal to memorialize. winters was by no means a criminal, unless you consider the mere act of being a soldier and fighting in a war a criminal, and if you actually hold this view then i really urge you to reconsider it. it's not like he got some high from killing people - he was pretty disdainful of war.

but like i said, this isn't the thread for that sort of thing, so let's drop it.

No, let's not drop it quite yet.  Richard Winters was a hero, because he was morally opposed to the idea of war, yet stepped up & put his life on the line to help destroy one of the most evil regimes this world has ever known, at great personal cost.  Which is more than any of us PEELers will ever do in our lifetimes.  If you read his biography, you'd know that he didn't want to be a soldier, but he, like most of his generation, recognized that if he sat by & did nothing, he would be allowing the Nazis to kill millions of people at will.  So, he set aside his personal beliefs and became the thing that he was opposed to, at the risk of potential death & dismemberment, to act for the greater good of his & future generations.  That, my friends, is a hero.  End of story.

That's pretty true of a lot of murdered people. I mean, one more thing that they could all have done would be to live longer.

But seriously, Lennon's musical career was already done at that point. If you need proof, just look at the evidence. He's not released a single track since he died.

A good musician is like a comic book superhero. You can't rely on their death to get in the way of their career.

Even Elvis released stuff after he died. And Michael Jackson as well.

Elvis didn't release Michael Jackson after he died. Jackson escaped.

He had a son to take care of, so he took a break. Between the time where he left his break and the time of his death, he only had enough time to record Double Fantasy.
